South East Asian BWF tournaments May-June 2024

So, mostly the last swing of higher level tournaments before olympics in Asia begins with a super 500 in Thailand this week followed by super 500 in Malaysia, super 750 in Singapore and ending with super 1000 in Indonesia. This can help with seedings at Paris

This week except for Lakshya Sen all of our olympic qualified players are playing and a lot more.

Thailand open started today and Prannoy had a shocking loss against fellow Indian 21 year old Meiraba Luwang Maisnam. Good for Meiraba but Prannoy again looking suspect in form.51st ranked Ashmita Chaliha had a good win over Indonesian Wardoyo ranked 38. Other than that expected results in first round.

HS Prannoy is a big match player. He is slowly building for the Olympics. His loss to Meiraba is a good wake up call, against defensive players he needs a different strategy. Meiraba followed this up with a win against Mads Christopherson in 2 games 21-14, 22-20 and is now in QF.

Ashmita Chaliha has the skills to beat top players but lacks discipline and confidence. Earlier this year she beat Okuhara and Michelle Li.
Thailand Open: she won a game against Han Yue 21-12 but lost in 3. She had a better chance to win if she won the first 2.

Satwik/Chirag eased into QF. They need to guard against complacency.

Ashwini/Tanisha are also in QF after beating a Taipei pair. They were guilty of wasting leads. They have a good test against a Korean pair in QF.

I was hoping Unnati would win her first round but not to be.

Ashmita is clearly establishing herself as the India #2 (and hopefully a top-30 ranking to go with it) until one of the juniors (Tanvi, Unnati, Anmol) has a breakthrough.

Unnati trains at a government academy in Haryana. She needs to train with a better coach to improve her skills. Her dad is reluctant to send her to another academy till she turns 18. He will think about it at that time!

Tanvi Sharma is playing her first senior tournament at the Slovenia IS, she passed the qualifiers and made the main draw. Tanvi looks like the player to make rapid strides.

Anmol has an ankle ligament tear from the Uber cup and is resting.

Anupama Upahyaya, Devika Sihag and Isharani Baruah are players to watch, all three are have been consistent in winning lower level tournaments and are in the top 100.

Thailand S500:
Meiraba lost in 2 games against Kunlavut Vitidsarn. It will be a good experience for him after struggling for a year in lower level tournaments. He needs to train hard.

Ashwini/Tanisha win a thriller against Lee Yu Lim/Shin Seung Chan in 3 games! They missed the opportunity to win in 2 and almost lost in 3.
21-15, 21-23, 21-19. Their first S500 semifinal!

Satwik/Chirag had an easy 2 game match against Junaidi Arif/Roy King Yap.

Satwik/Chirag storm into the final against Taipei's Ming Che Lu/Tang Kai Wei. This is their 4th S500 final. They can expect stronger pairs in the Indonesia S1000.

Ashwini/Tanisha lose in 2 games against Thailand's Jongkolphan/Rawinda. They had a poor start in game 1. In game 2 they were unable to hold on to a 5 point lead 8-3 and lost 20-22. Disappointing that they couldn't win at least a game. They have a lot of areas to work on, at this point they are not medal contenders at the Olympics.

I hadn't realized Ashmita is already 24. I thought she was a year or two older than the Anupama, Devika and Isharani cohort who are all 19-20. Tasnim Mir is also part of the Anupama generation.

Realistically, none of them are going to be top-10 players based on their career trajectory. You need to have made a deep run in a super500+ event by 19 in WS for that and none of them have done anything even close to that.

There are also the two 17-year olds who are playing in the Slovenian tournament that you mentioned who have made a deep run - Rakshitha Ramraj and Shriyanshi Valishetty. Remains to be seen if they have a similar trajectory to Anupama and Tasnim or are able to make a breakthrough.

We will have a lot of top-50/60 level players soon but obviously one top-5 player is worth more than ten of the former.

I agree India needs a few top 5/10 WS players it will take time.

This reminds me a few years ago we had 10 MS in the top 100, 10 in top 50, 7 in top 30.

Indian WS can hunt in packs, helping each other knock out different players.
The important thing is these players will push each other in becoming competitive and improving their skills. India has a large talent pool and many are now getting the opportunity to travel for international tournaments. The junior players are pushing the seniors and newly transitioned seniors.
Each year we will see the improvement in team events and individual tournaments.

Satwik/Chirag are MD Champions Thailand Open 2024 S500! They beat China's Chen Bo Yang/Liu li in 2 games. This is a good morale boost after the disappointment at the Thomas cup.

Slovenia IS
Rakshita Ramraj and Shrianshi Valishetty set up an all Indian final in WS! Indian WS stands tall and continues to be the most consistent in lower level tournaments.

Tharun Mannepalli and Aryamann Tandon make semifinal exits in MS.

Rakshitha beat Shriyanshi in the finals, good run from both.

Strange that Lakshya is not playing next week in Malaysia either but PVS and Treesa/Gayatri are back in action. I see Unnati in the qualifying draw for WS and in the main draw for WD. SatChi and Prannoy take a break.
