India's tour of Windies in May/June 2006
Speculation for Indian team selection already begins ... In PTI report they mentioned that the selection committee has more or less decided the 16-member team for the five limited-overs games in WI ... "The squad will have seven batsmen and bowlers each and two wicketkeepers."
2 Wicketkepers - Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Dinesh Kaarthick
7 Batsmen - Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh
7 Bowlers - Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Munaf Patel, S Sreeshanth, Harbhajan Singh, Ramesh Powar
The chances of Mohammad Kaif and Venugopala Rao making it to the team depend on their performance in Abu Dhabi ... And if they fail to get runs, two old warhorses would get a recall.
The seventh bowler will be either Rudra Pratap Singh or VRV Singh.
So lets wait until 20th April to see if our selection committee gives any surprise or stick to the team mentioned in the report.
Jaydeep.

I think a lot depends on how well Sachin recovers from injury. If he recovers there is just one spot left and hopefully it is Ganguly

Dont think Sachin will be fit for One Dayers. May play the Tests.....Ganguly - cant see him coming back now..... Venugopal Rao - somehow I feel he is getting far too many chances without much to show for. Though made some runs today, he doesnt look to be a player, who can win us games. Time to test a couple more batsman before WC 2007.

Doesnt look comfortable at big stage. Looks to be lacking confidence. Compare him with Raina or Yuvraj who are full of energy and make their presence felt. Rao should take these chances and make a mark. These tentative knocks will do no good and the Indian team will carry him as he poses no threat to any of the stalwarts. So when any one of them have to be rested, Rao gets a knock and invariably doesnt do much and back come the Kaifs & Sehwags..nothingnew wrote:I like Venugopal Rao. I am a big fan of his square cut

As expected, same team has been retained for the WI tour. So no Ganguly & Tendulkar. Kaif retains his place !!!

India have the firepower to get the job done
Michael Holding

I always enjoyed Holding but this article shows clearly that he has not been following Indian cricket a lot and is writing without substance. Here is one such statement:
Raina and Powar look to be two young batsmen going places ....
He seems to think that Powar is young and is a batsman. Would you call 27 years and 360 days "young"? And isn't Powar in the team because he is a good off-spinner who can bat a bit?

India's tour of Windies in May/June 2006
India registered their 17th successful run-chase in a row ... But match was cliffhanger ... Until last over drama was continue ... Match started late due to overnight heavy rain ... So they decided 45 overs match ... India won the toss and elected to field, but they started disastrously ... Pathan in his 1st over gave 14 runs in that he bowled 3 wides and 2 no balls ... Windies recieved good start of 87 runs in 14 overs ... Gayle played another good inning against India to scored his 12th ODI hundred and 4th against Indians ... Lara also chipped with 35 runs ... From India pick of the bowlers were Harbhajan and Agarkar.
India started chase confidently with 56 runs opening partnership ... Sehwag got run out on 22 runs ... Sehwag was struggling on the fild ... His judgement of singles and running between the wicket was poor ... Atleast 2 times he was lucky to not getting himself runout ... Dravid played superb inning to scored his 12th century ... Kaif struggled in the begining but managed to hold his front ... He remained not out on 66 ... But Windies players dropped his catches on 6 and 40 ... We managed to win, but we got lots of help from Windies poor fielding ... When we were 249/5, Bravo missed opportunity to runout Raina while gathering throw from Lara.
West Indies 251/6 (45 ov)
Chris Gayle 123 (131 balls 18x4s, 2x6s), Brian Lara 35 (43 balls 4x4s 1x6), Runako Morton 23 (38 balls 2x4s)
Harbhajan Singh 1/33, Ajit Agarkar 2/38, Munaf Patel 1/48
PS. Brian Lara became 1st victim of Munaf Patel in ODI, in his 3rd ODI he managed to grab his first wicket.
India 254/5 (44.5 ov)
Rahul Dravid 105 (102 balls 10x4s 2x6s), Mohammad Kaif 66 no (91 balls 3x4s), Mahendra Singh Dhoni 18 (11 balls 2x4s, 1x6)
Ian Bradshaw 2/40, Dwayne Bravo 2/50
India won match by 5 wickets and leading series 1-0.
Man of the Match - Rahul Dravid.

Greg Chappell's press conference after the match -
It suits to have Dravid at the top: Chappell
Lara's comments on match and Chappell's views -
We are not chokers, says Lara

India's tour of Windies in May/June 2006
Superb bowling performance by Agarkar today. He had figures of 7-2-5-1 in his first spell, apart from being extremely unlucky not to have Lara given out (when he was plumb lbw) and then dropped at second slip by Raina. Pathan and the offspinning twins also bowled well in an excellent Indian bowling performance.
But it is painful for a cricket fan (albeit quite satisfying for an Indian!) to see the utter ineptitude of the West Indies batting. No more than one batsman seems to get going in one innings. Today it was Sarwan, who was stranded on 98* (having once similarly ended on 99* against India!). He got to 10 runs off about 45 balls (and was being thoroughly excoriated by the commentators during this phase), but he held the innings together quite expertly and gave their total a semblance of respectability.
