If Shrivalli can play like today, she has a chance. ...

Ankita does have a very tough match. But I think the other two are in with strong chances to win. Maaya lost to Diyas recently, but she got the measure of her game in the second set, and I'm sure she has better strategies to win this time. Let's go!!

But what a red letter day this has proven for Indian women's tennis: THREE Indians have won a round each in the main draw of a WTA 125.

These are fantastic results especially for Maaya and Shrivalli. No reason why they can’t go further here. :goodluck:

It happened last year too. We had three first round upsets. Wildcard Sahaja upset the top seed, qualifier Shrivalli upset the 2nd seed and wildcard Rutuja upset a qualifier... Atually only two upsets this time.

Shrivalli has repeated her show. Hope she will go further this time. She was in danger of dropping to around 350 from her current 325 but retained 15 of the 21 points she had to defend at Mumbai (including 6 for qualifying).

Nao Hibino, after her 0-2 loss to Hontama, shared on Instagram that many players, including herself, suffered food poisoning, mainly from the hotel food.

In fact the official drawsheet also lists that as the reason for 6 withdrawals/retirements.

Nao's post seems to locate the problem to a specific hotel.

I also wonder if some of the players who finished their matches may have also been hampered by the bug. As much as Shrivalli impressed me, there's no way Pridankina would have fallen so easily if she was fully healthy. L Fruh was also in considerable discomfort and barely won her match against lucky loser Failla.

All three of them - Marino, Krunic, and Diyas - have been in the world's top 40. Diyas and Krunic even made the second week at one or two slams, and while that was a long time ago, that kind of experience does make a difference. It helped Diyas beat the defending champ quite easily.

Ankita saved 3 or 4 BPs late in the third set to send it to a tiebreaker, but fell in the end... Terrific fight against the second seed, but a loss :(

[R2] (WC) Ankita Raina (IND,297) l. (2) Rebecca Marino (CAN,103), 57 62 67(5)

Based on WTA score, 3rd set was 6-7(5). Minor correction to show the extent of fight.
