Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Yes, Gaurav Solanki has the toughest bout in the QF. There are 6 who qualify thru from that weight category though. So, even if he loses he will have a second chance in the box-off between losing quarter finalists.
In the meantime, in 75 kgs, Ashish Kumar easily beat his Kygyz opponent in unanimous decision and he goes thru to the QF. One win away from olympic qualification.
Manish Kaushik in 63 kgs and Sachin Kumar in 81 kg having their PQF in the evening session. Manish is 2019 world championships bronze medalist.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Oops, my mistake. So, that category is a goner.
In the meantime, Manish Kaushik wins a unanimous decision against a Taiwanese boxer to move thru to QF. Another one win away from olympics qualification.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Another win for with Sachin Kumar moving thru to QF with a unanimous verdict against a Samoan boxer.
7 out of 7 wins for us so fare here in the qualifier and now we have 3 men and 4 women boxers thru to the last 8 and 1 win away from Tokyo olympics. 5 men and 1 women still need 2 wins to go thru.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
We had our first loss today in 91kg category. This was probably our weakest category anyway. Most of the QF bouts are going to be pretty even, and we will likely only win around 4 out of 7 on the men's side, and 3 out of 5 on the women's side.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Amit got some help from the judges it looks like in a very close bout today. He will have to box much better if he has to win a medal in the Olympics. Solanki lost as expected, so now we have 6 QFs in the men's side, and 5 in the women's side.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Yes, Amit won in a 3-2 split decision over a Mongolian boxer whom he had lost to in world military games and it seems he won it more in reputation. Gaurav Solanki put a pretty good fight against world #1 and lost by 1-4. He is quite good and will get another chance later to qualify for Tokyo.indiansportsfan wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 12:31 am Amit got some help from the judges it looks like in a very close bout today. So, these are QF line ups-
Men's Flyweight - Amit Panghal vs. Carlo Palam (PHI) - Amit had won against Palam at last year's world championships 4-1, it can be a close one though with Amit slight favorite
Men's Lightweight- Manish Kaushik vs. Chinzorig Baatrasukh (MGL) - Not much know of Mongolian, Manish should be favorite
Men's Welterweight- Vikash Krishan Yadav vs. Quicy Okazwa (JPN)- Japanese is 2019 Asian championships silver medalist, so it will be a close one.
Men's Middleweight - Ashish Kumar vs. Mikhel Robero Muskita (INA) - Ashish would be favorite
Men's Light Heavyweight- Sachin Kumar vs. Chen Daixing (CHN) - Again not much achievement from Chinese but Sachin is also a newbi, so a close one
Men's Super Heavyweight - Satish Kumar vs. Daivii Otgonbayar (MGL) - Satish would be favoured here
Women's Flyweight - Marykom vs. Magno Irish (PHI)- Mary would be clear favorite here
Women's Featherweight- Sakshi vs. Im Aeji (KOR) - both are new boxers. So, a close one
Women's Lightweight - Simranjeet Kaur vs. Monkhor Namuun (MGL)- Namuun was a QF at WC and bronze medalist at Asian championships while Simran was a silver medalist in higher weight class, so this will be an even bout
Women's Welterweight - Borgohain Lovlina vs. Melieva Maftunakhon (UZB) - Lovlina was WC bronze medalist , so would be favourite here
Women's Middleweight- Pooja Rani vs. Chutee Pornnipa (THA) - Pooja was AC 2019 gold medalist, so favourite here.
So, at least 6 out of 11 bouts we would be favoured, other 5 will be close and few will get a second chance even if they lose in QF. So, expecting about 8 quotas from her for Tokyo olympics. Anything more will be a bonus.
Pooja, Lovlina on womens side and Vikas,Sachin, Ashish and Satish will have their QF today.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Pooja Rani and Vikas Krishan thru to the Tokyo olympics with unanimous decision wins. Vikas with a very good one against world's 6th ranked Japanese boxer.
Sachin Kumar lost a close one in a split decision 2-3 against a Chinese boxers. There are going to be 5 boxers going thru this category. So, Sachin goes into a box off where he has to win 2 more bouts.
Our 3 other bouts are in the evening session.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Lovlina also through on women's side. Sachin may have been a little unlucky in the 81kg category, because reputations matter a lot in close bouts and he was the unfancied boxer. However he should have a good chance in the box-offs since none of his potential opponents seem particularly strong.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Ashish Kumar and Satish Kumar both won their bouts and have qualified for Tokyo olympics too.
So, 5 out of 6 possible quotas for us today with chance of getting 5 more tomorrow.
As a comparison we had only 3 quotas in boxing at Rio.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Ashish and Satish also through as expected. Amit and Mary Kim should also make it tomorrow. The tricky matches will be Kaushik, Sakshi and Simranjeet. We will be lucky if we can get more than 1 win.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
You were right Indiansportsfan. Both Manish and Sakshi lost their bouts, Manish with a close 2-3 loss while Sakshi lost in a unanimous verdict.
Manish will go into a box off to try to qualify but Sakshi's chances are over at least in this tournament.
Amit Panghal qualified for Tokyo but only after a close 3-2 win over a Philipino.
