India Open/Malaysia Open/Singapore Open - March 2019

Post by sameerph »

3 weeks of major tournaments in Asia begins with India open this week. It is a weak field this week at India open with only 3 top 10 players in mens singles and 3 in womens singles.

Srikanth and Sindhu are #2 and #1 seeds effectively in mens and womens singles respectively although they are seeded 1 place lower as top seeds in both events withdrew at the last moment.

Hope our players can go all the way at the India open this week.

6 Indians are in second round.

Srikanth lost in the final

At India Open Super Series, New Delhi

[F] (3) KIDAMBI Srikanth (IND,7) l. (2) Viktor AXELSEN (DEN,4) 7-21 20-22

Srikanth made it to the final of a tournament after long time but still cannot put up any sort of challenge against top 5 players. It seems really a long time since he beat a top 5 player.

True, if one looks at his performances against current top 6 since start of 2018-

#1 Momota - 0-7
#2 Shi Yuqi 1-0
#3 Chou 0-1
#4 Axelsen 0-1
#5 Chen Long- not played
#6 Son Wan Ho 0-1

So, it is a poor 1-10 with last win against Chinese Shi Yuqui coming in February 2019. He has a fair record against those below top 8 in that period. But, needs to desperately improve that record against top 6 to have any chance of a medal at Tokyo.

Disappointing start for our players at Malaysian open.

At Malayasia open - BWF 750

[R1] Sameer VERMA (IND,15) l. (2) SHI Yuqi (CHN,2) 20-22 23-21 12-21
[R1] (8) KIDAMBI Srikanth (IND,7) d. Ihsan Maulana MUSTOFA (INA,41) 21-18 21-16
[R1] PRANNOY H. S. (IND,21) l. Sitthikom THAMMASIN (THA,34) 21-12 16-21 14-21

[R1] (5) PUSARLA V. Sindhu (IND,6) d. Aya OHORI (JPN,20) 22-20 21-12
[R1] (8) Saina NEHWAL (IND,9) l. Pornpawee CHOCHUWONG (THA,21) 22-20 15-21 10-21

[R1] ATTRI Manu / REDDY B. Sumeeth (IND,21) l. (7) ZHOU Haodong / HAN Chengkai (CHN,6) 16-21 6-21

[R1] Ashwini PONNAPPA / REDDY N. Sikki (IND,20) l. KIM Hye Rin / BAEK Ha Na (KOR,42) 20-22 21-17 20-22

[R1] Pranaav Jerry CHOPRA / REDDY N. Sikki (IND,31) d. Sam MAGEE / Chloe MAGEE (IRL,36) 22-20 24-22

Bad losses for Saina and Prannoy against lower ranked players. Sameer put up a good fight against world #2.

Later today-

[R2] (8) KIDAMBI Srikanth (IND,7) vs. Khosit PHETPRADAB (THA,18)

[R2] (5) PUSARLA V. Sindhu (IND,6) vs. SUNG Ji Hyun (KOR,10)

[R2] Pranaav Jerry CHOPRA / REDDY N. Sikki (IND,31) vs. TAN Kian Meng / LAI Pei Jing (MAS,38)

And only Srikanth advances to QF.

At Malayasia open - BWF 750

[R2] (8) KIDAMBI Srikanth (IND,7) d. Khosit PHETPRADAB (THA,18) 21-11 21-15

[R2] (5) PUSARLA V. Sindhu (IND,6) l. SUNG Ji Hyun (KOR,10) 18-21 7-21

[R2] Pranaav Jerry CHOPRA / REDDY N. Sikki (IND,31) l. TAN Kian Meng / LAI Pei Jing (MAS,38) 21-15 17-21 13-21

Sindhu looks in bad form. She has hardly won anything in 2019 so far. Hope she turns it around soon.

Srikanth has been fairly consistent in winning against players ranked below top 10 in last 1 year but his tough test comes from QF onwards as it happens now.

[QF] (8) KIDAMBI Srikanth (IND,7) vs. (4) CHEN Long (CHN,5)

How long will Long Chen chain our players with his long chain? Is he not long overdue to be retired?

Chen Long is 30. One of the oldest players in top 20 but still not at the stage of retiring. Are you confusing him with Lin Dan who is 35 ?

Anyway, this year so far he does not seem to be at his best. Sai Praneeth beat him last month in Swiss Open. Can Srikanth do likewise ?
