Dhruthi Tatachar Venugopal thread

Post by PKBasu »

19-year-old Dhruthi beat Victoria Muntean (FRA, 445) in the final of the Sharm el-Sheikh Futures this past week to win her first Futures title -- that too overseas -- to earn her individual thread on our forum.
She also beat Fanny Ostlund (SWE, 580) in R2. Two wins over 19-year-old Europeans, implying this was a well-deserved title in a strong field!

Coached by Sandeep Kirtane, she has a career-high ranking (Feb 2016) of 534, but had edged down to 704 in singles before last week's win.
She also has 6 Futures doubles titles, including 2 this year, and is currently at her career-high doubles ranking of 455.

The Russian she beat in R1 is a 19 year old ranked 901 and the Czech she beat in the QF is an 18 year old ranked 1108. So this was a tournament full of aspiring European players in their late teens, who were all beaten by an Indian in her late teens. Cool!

Young players go to Sharm El Sheikh as the cut tends to be fairly low and they can get in easily. So it is a good place to bring up one's ranking to a level wherein they can get into Futures elsewhere. There also seems to be a tournament every week.

I think the field for this particular week was not that weak as compared to some of the fields in Asia or even some of the other weeks here. None of the Indians were seeded.

I am more happy as Dhruthi beat 4 European players in winning the title and the Europeans tend to be somewhat under ranked due to the tough competition that they have to go thru. She has played lots of tournaments abroad in last year or so which seems to have helped her game.

An update almost after an year. Dhruthi has been phenomenal in the past few months with notable wins against Al Nabhani and Sara Tomic.

She will be traveling to Nederlands for a couple of $15K ITF tournaments starting next week. :goodluck:
