Re: Rio Summer Olympics 2016
I just posted that news in Indian gymnastics thread of Deepa qualifying.
As for medal prospects looking bleak at Rio as of now, I remember we had a similar situation a few months before London Olympics when if you refer to that thread most of us had given up hope more than 2-3 medals at best. We ended up with our best ever performance with 6 medals.
We all thought that would be a start of big things to come for us in sports. But, unfortunately the things have not moved much in last 4 years. So, hoping for the best and as of now, I would like to go with Ankit's prediction of 2-3 medals in shooting, 1 each from wrestling and boxing and 1 from badminton/archery for a total of 5-6 medals. Of course, a lot depends on luck and it could all end with less than 3 medals .

Re: Rio Summer Olympics 2016
My expectation is as follows:
Shooting: 1-2
Wrestling: 0-2
Boxing: 0-1
Badminton: 1 (Saina)
Tennis: 0-1 (MxD)
Rest (archery, hockey etc.): 0-1
Total Range: 2-8. Will be very happy if we can repeat London's haul of 6 medals.

Re: Rio Summer Olympics 2016
It is confirm that our seven badminton players have qualify for Rio Olympics after completion of the Badminton Asia Championships ... This is our biggest badminton contingent would be fielding at the Olympics ... Though the BWF (Badminton World Federation) will be making an official statement after 5th May's ranking,
here r qualified seven Indians - Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Jwala Gutta, Ashwini Ponnappa, Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy.
Still our real chance of medal in Women's singles only.

Yes, real chance is with women's singles. If Srikanth can find his form, he'd have a small chance as well...

Re: Rio Summer Olympics 2016
Saina's current form isn't good enough nor is Sindhu's.
Are the seedings set in stone or is there still a chance for Saina to make the top 4 and for Sindhu the top 8?

We have been, at least in the last Olympics. Deepika was at the top of her game going into London.PKBasu wrote:Shouldn't we be serious contenders for a medal or two in Archery?

Re: Rio Summer Olympics 2016
Of course we should be in contention in medals in Archery. Our archers have been consistently fetching medals in the world cups. However, the same thing was happening before the London Olympics but unfortunately our archers just froze on the big stage at London. I just hope same thing does not happen here.
As for badminton, we missed qualifying for second mens singles spot. Kashyap got injured at wrong time and Prannoy/Ajay could not step it up. I agree that as of now , Saina is the only one looking to be in contention for a medal and she too needs to improve her ranking in next couple of months to get a good seeding.

Re: Rio Summer Olympics 2016
Saina is certainly a contender, because there won't be more than 3 Chinese in the draw. A good seeding will nonetheless be a big leg up.
I'm sure Deepika will be in better shape now, with more experience under the belt (including the experience of being at London).

But, it is not only Saina versus the Chinese. There is Marin, the Thai, the Japanese, the Korean and the Taiwanese. The competition is greater these days. Any of these can beat any other on their day. I hope she hits peak form and fitness, and gets a medal. What form she is at the quarterfinal will be crucial.

Re: Rio Summer Olympics 2016
True, before London Olympics, Saina was pretty much beating all non-Chinese players and even at London got beaten by 1 Chinese player and lost a game against another one before getting a bit lucky with her opponent getting injured and she getting the bronze.
This time as of now , Saina would be only seeded 7th ( leaving out 1 of the 3 Chinese) and apart from the 2 Chinese, Intanon, Marin, Okhura and Sun are ahead of her and she also has a losing record against Tai who is below her. So, it is a much stronger field this time around and winning a medal will be more difficult. Saina will have to beat at least 2 of the players mentioned above to get a medal.

Re: Rio Summer Olympics 2016
Sun is certainly behind Saina in terms of play and will be behind in terms of ranking as well. BTW July 21st rankings will be used for seedings. Okuhara peaked early and is going down. So is Marin. Right now those really ahead of Saina are Intanon, Lee xuerui and Tai. Yihan, Okuhara Marin and shixia wang are at par. Still long way to go.
