Is the RCGC Cup that is currently being played an official tournament of the IGU or is it just a club tournament that includes top amateur golfers, as part of its Anniversary celebrations?

One of the forum members, Sanjeev Mehra (brother of Smriti Mehra) is participating in the Eastern India Amateur Championship and has defeated the Sri Lanka Open champion (Simarjeet) in the prequarterfinals. In the first round he took care of Chirag Kumar who had won the title title at the Royal Challenge RCGC Cup.

Royal Challenge-Eveready 104th All India Amateur Golf

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

Stage set for Royal Challenge-Eveready 104th All India Amateur Championship

NEW DELHI, February 25: Top amateurs from six countries will battle it out for the Royal Challenge-Eveready 104th All India Amateur Championship, the grand finale of the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour’s 2004-2005 season. The prestigious event, which enjoys the distinction of being the second oldest golf tournament in the world after the British Open, will be played at the par-72 Delhi Golf Club from 26th February to 5th March 2005.

The tournament will witness team and individual contests with ten two-member teams clashing for the international stroke-play competition to be held on 26th and 27th February. This will be followed by more than 128 players battling it out on matchplay format over the next six days with the two finalists competing for the title over a 36-hole contest.

“We at Royal Challenge are extremely proud to be associated with the 104th edition of the All India Amateur Championship. The event is a fitting conclusion to what has proven to be a thrilling year on the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour and I assure you of an exciting week ahead with the best golfing talent from the Asian region on display”, said Mr Deepak Chaudhuri, Joint President Marketing, Shaw Wallace.

This year the field includes 14 players from Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and India. The foreign challenge will be led by Dr. Aimal Zaman from Pakistan, KA Chandradasa from Sri Lanka, Tashi Ghale from Nepal, Ming Chuan Chen from China and Mohd Siddikur from Bangladesh. India’s leading amateurs who will be seen in action include the number one ranked player on the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour’s Order Of Merit Gaganjeet Bhullar; winner of the title in 2002, Manav Das and three-time winner of the Sri Lankan Open Simarjeet Singh.

The 2004-05 season on the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour has been witness to some inspired performances by new faces like Jaskirat Dullet, Amardip Sinh Malik, Joseph Chakola and Chirag Kumar besides rookie Gaganjeet Bhullar, with as many as nine winners emerging from 11 events played thus far. Bhullar is the only player to have won more than once on the Tour with three titles in his kitty, the latest coming last week in Chandigarh at the Royal Challenge Samarvir Sahi Amateur.

Venue for this year’s event is the historic Delhi Golf Club, which has been the battlefield for many famous duels. The course, with its narrow fairways lined by strategically placed trees and punishing roughs, is regarded as one of the toughest to negotiate in the country and will add to the challenge for the players.

“The Royal Challenge-Eveready 104th All India Amateur is geared up for some scintillating golfing action and as the season comes to a close I would once again like to thank Royal Challenge for providing tremendous support to amateur circuit as the Tour sponsor,” said Prakash Bhandari, President of the Indian Golf Union.

With the quality of the playing field and the test that the golf course has on offer, the stage is all set to witness many ‘Royal Challenge’ moments at the Royal Challenge-Eveready 104th All India Amateur Championship.

AS LEHAL V SIDDIKUR OF BANGLADESH FINAL

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

REPORT ON SEMIS OF ALL INDIA -- GOT IT FROM BUDDIES IN TIGER SPORTS

It’s India vs Bangladesh for All India Amateur title

NEW DELHI, 4th March: Chandigarh’s AS Lehal set himself up for a clash with Bangladesh’s Md Siddikur Rahman in the 36-hole final of the Royal Challenge Eveready 104th All India Amateur Championship, the second oldest golf tournament in the world after the British Open, being played at the par-72 Delhi Golf Club.

The third ranked Lehal won a thrilling semi-final match over second ranked Simarjeet Singh on the 18th hole to give himself a shot at winning the most prestigious title on the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour. Meanwhile Md Siddikur Rahman vanquished the in-form KA Chandradasa 2&1 who finished runner up at the All India Amateur Championship in 1998.

Both semi-finals contests proved to be extremely close affairs with all four players displaying a roaring form. In the Singh-Lehal contest, it was the three-time Sri Lankan amateur winner Simarjeet who drew first blood as he won the first two holes. The 24-year old ‘Sandy’ Lehal then bounced back to take the fourth and reduce the gap between himself and his opponent to one hole. However Simarjeet then claimed the fifth even as the determined Lehal bounced back winning the sixth and seventh for himself. With Simar conquering the ninth, the two proceeded for their return journey with the score 1-up in the Noida golfer’s favour.

The tenth hole witnessed a turnaround as Sandy played some aggressive golf to win the hole, making it all-square. With the next hole being halved, Lehal shifted to a higher gear winning two consecutive holes in a row. It was 2-up in Lehal’s favour after 15 holes and just when it seemed that it would be a comfortable victory for the Chandigarh golfer, Simarjeet got back into contention winning the 16th. With the 17th hole being halved, Simarjeet had to win the 18th hole to force the match into a playoff. However a wayward tee shot that was swallowed by the thick left rough saw Simarjeet take an extra stroke which cost him the hole and consequently the match.

The duel with an international flavour, that between current Bangladesh Amateur champion Siddikur Rahman and Sri Lanka’s top amateur Chandradasa saw the latter take the lead on the second hole itself. He consolidated this lead when he claimed the next hole as well and retained his lead of two holes till the ninth when Rahman won to reduce the gap to a solitary hole. The story continued till the 12th before Rahman bounced back to take the 13th hole to make the score all-square. With the Bangladeshi taking the 16th the scoreline tilted in his favour for the first time in the match. The diminutive golfer then wasted no time as he won the very next hole to seal the fate of the match 2&1 in his favour.

The contest for supremacy at the Royal Challenge Eveready 104th All India Amateur tomorrow is guaranteed to be a thrilling affair. If Rahman wins the title he will earn the distinction of being the first player from Bangladesh to do so. Meanwhile Lehal, known for his determination and aggressive play will not prove an easy opponent to beat.

RESULTS (Semi-final): Md Siddikur Rahman (B’desh) bt KA Chandradasa 2&1; AS Lehal bt Simarjeet Singh 2-up

SUNDAY: Final of the Royal Challenge Eveready 104th All-India Amateur Golf Championship – Md Siddikur (B’desh) vs AS Lehal Starting 8.00 am at the Delhi Golf Club. Prize distribution at the venue at 4:00 pm

Md. Siddikur crowned All-India Amateur champion

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

REPORT ON FINAL

Md. Siddikur crowned All-India Amateur champion

NEW DELHI, March 5th: Top Bangladesh amateur Md Siddikur Rehman vanquished Chandigarh’s AS Lehal 3&2 in a 36-hole affair to win the Royal Challenge Eveready 104th All India Amateur title. The event, which concluded at the Delhi Golf Club today, was the grand finale of the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour’s 2004-05 season.

With this win not only did Siddikur become the first player from his country to win the All-India Amateur title but he also assumed the role of the first amateur to win a golf tournament outside Bangladesh. The title also completes Siddikur’s hat-trick after he claimed the Nepal Amateur and Bangladesh Amateur earlier this year.

“It gives me great pleasure to extend my heartiest congratulations to Md Siddikur Rehman on his tremendous victory at the All-India Amateur Championship, undoubtedly the most prestigious title on the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour”, said Mr Deepak Chaudhuri, Joint President, Shaw Wallace in a congratulatory note to the winner.

It was sweet revenge for Rehman, who had lost to Lehal in the second round of the All India Amateur championship held in Bangalore in 2002. Today the Bangladeshi did not give his opponent a chance to get into the lead. The morning session saw him keep a stranglehold on the game as he played percentage golf to finish 3-up after the first 18 holes.

An hour’s break later, Lehal started to script a recovery, which saw him even scores after the tenth hole (28th for the day). Siddikur pulled two back but not without help from his opponent who missed a key putt or two under five feet in distance. The 25 feet putt Siddikur sank on the 15th which proved to be the final nail in the coffin. The Indian, who’s effort on that very green came to rest just a couple of inches short of the cup gave up that very instant. This was apparent in his tee shot on the following hole, which he sent into the left thicket. Another trip to the woods after a penalty drop sealed Sandy Lehal’s fate.

“I am delighted at winning this title which has come to me after a week of hard work. The level of competition at the All-India has been very high and it is a good feeling to have come up trumps from among such established players’, said a visibly elated Rehman.

Meanwhile, it was heart break yet again for Lehal who had to contend with the runner-up tag the second time. The Chandigarh lad had met the same fate in the 2002 edition of the All India Amateur finals in which he lost to Manav Das. “It is disappointing to have reached this stage and not get my hands on the trophy but all credit goes to Rehman who never really let me get into the lead”, said the gracious runner-up.

FINAL ROUND: Md Siddikur Rehman (Bangladesh) bt AS Lehal (India) 3&2

Rahul lifts Sunfeast Northern India Junior Golf title

NEW DELHI , July 7: Rahul Bakshi romped home to a 10 stroke win in the Category 'A' of the Sunfeast Northern India Junior/ Sub-Junior Golf Championship which concluded at the par-72 Army Golf Course here on Friday.

Rahul Bakshi who shot a final round of one-under 71, finished the event with a winning tally of 283, while Amanjyot Singh finished second at 293 after shooting a final round of 80.

Category 'B' saw Abhijeet Chadha clinch the title with a round of 83. His four-day tally stood at 303. Chikka Rangappa shot a 73 to finish second with a tally of 309 while Rommel Mazumdar bounced back with a solid 74 to pip Raghav Bhandari by three strokes. Mazumdar ended the tournament with a tally of 312 to finish third.

In the junior-most Category 'D' local boy Vidit Singh romped home to a seven stroke win over Master Honey with a tally of 243. Vidit carded an 81 today while Master honey finished with a round of 86.

The prizes were given by Gen. J.J. Singh, Chief of Army Staff & President of the Indian Golf Union.

Overnight leader Rahul Bakshi played some scintillating golf today. With just a stroke separating him from Amanjyot, Bakshi began with two consecutive birdies on the second and third hole but bogeyed the fourth and sixth to even things out. A birdie on the seventh was again neutralized by a bogey on the eight as he turned at even par.

On his return journey Bakshi played flawless golf as he recorded three consecutive birdies on the 11th , 12th and 13th, but faltered in the middle to record two bogies on the 14th and 15th. He then birdied the 17th but rounded off his day with yet another bogey. "I was a bit inconsistent today. Amanjyot had a bad round otherwise things could have been different," said the champion.

Amanjyot had a bad day in office as he recorded just two birdies on the 4th and 14th hole. However, six bogies and two double bogies cost him the title. "I just didn't have a good day. I putted poorly and my overall hitting wasn't that great," said the dejected golfer from Jaipur, who is now off to London to take part in the British junior golf championship.
