BWF World Championships 2019

Post by Sin Hombre »

With Satwik and Chirag withdrawing, not much to look forward to.

We have had 9 years in a row where we have won at least a medal in that year's main competition (WC or OG). I think that streak will break this year unless Sindhu the big tournament player shows up.

D1's action went as expected.

All 4 of our men were supposed to win easily as per rankings. Only 3 did with #14 Sameer Verma losing to #34. Srikanth and Prannoy barely beat #81 and #93. Hard to see them doing much here.

Lin Dan is semi-retired and more focused on business than badminton

But still ranked 17th!!!! and ranked higher than most of our players :). And he is semi retired for last 5 years and still keeps coming back and winning.
BTW I just checked he played 20 tournaments in last year. That is more than most in top 20!!!

All 3 men won their R2 and are now in the last 16 (at least at par with seedings).

Next up for HSP is a very high hurdle in #1 Momota.

BSP has rising Indonesian star Ginting (#8)

Srikanth has slightly lower ranked Thai Wangcharoen (#15).

PVS and Saina are also into the last 16. PVS has Beiwen Zhang (#10), a very tricky opponent, and Saina has #12 Blichfeldt.

As per rankings, 3/5 should make quarters but unrealistic on current form.

With Satwik missing, no doubles pairs made it to the last 16.

Nice wins for Praneeth and Sindhu in R-3/PQF. Predictable losses for Srikanth and Prannoy. Hopefully, Saina can get us our 3rd win of the day....

Really bad loss for Saina. She never loses to such players and in this fashion.

We can take out Srikanth completely from the OG 2020 projections table now (even from the "no-hopers"). He has an uphill climb to qualify at this point, and he is unable to beat any top-20 player these days and tbh he is not even competing against them.

Srikanth is 10k points behind Prannoy and at least 12k points behind BSP after this tournament.

Saina will need to play more tournaments than she would like over the next 7 months to guarantee qualification as well.

Our proud run of medal-ing 9 years in a row will be severely tested tomorrow. Both our players are underdogs.

Yes, Both won. Praneeth more easily. But for next one Sindhu has better chance. In fact, Sindhu has a very good chance to go all the way. Praneeth does not have much chance but he should play as aggressively and freely as he has played so far.
