Looks like a serious injury but I wonder whether surgery ("excision") is the only or best option. She will be out for quite awhile after the surgery.
Get better soon, Saina!

Re: Saina Nehwal Thread - WR#1 on April 2,2015
Totally understandable why she is posting it on twitter. She received a lot of (unnecessary) flak on social media. That increased when Sindhu reached the finals. This is what I don't like about the general public. People are generally unaware what goes on in sport and are completely vociferous when Olympics arrive. Saina still has some good 4-5 years left in her tank which she can use to improve her career. We should support our players and not belittle them like use and throw policy

Newspaper reports say that she can start playing after about 4 months. So, it looks this year is virtually over for her. Hope, she can still come back next year and pose fresh challenger. She still can have couple of good years in womens badminton.PKBasu wrote:Looks like a serious injury but I wonder whether surgery ("excision") is the only or best option. I don't see why it should be only a couple of years. Saina is a contender for medals at the Tokyo Olympics.
Wang Yihan is 28+ and still very competitive. Saina at 30 (with her knee repaired) should be a serious contender, like 30+ men like Lee Chongwei and Lin Da are at Rio.

Yeah, Saina will be around during the next Olympics I think Sindhu winning the silver medal will take a lot of pressure off Saina -- she can perform better knowing that there is another Indian player who can pick up the slack when she is out. It is also good that Saina is no longer coached by Gopi -- she will get more attention from her coach who doesn't have to coach too many top players.

Good competition helps players. Till now she was our champion fighting the world for us. But with emergence of Sindhu there is competition for that post.
It will be good. A fit Saina will have additional motivation to regain India's no 1 slot (mind share not ranking).
Age won't be in her side. But enough sports person have broken the age barrier.

This 4-6 months of hiatus from the top competition might prove to be good for Saina. It takes her mind off the competitive pressure for a while, prevents mental burn-out and gives her body the needed rest. Rest, rehab and recover stronger.

As per reports, Saina will start practising again this Monday. That is good news and it seems she may return to competition before the end of the year which is earlier than expected.

Yes, it looks like Saina will be back in action in tournament in mid-November. This is the report from Hindu with quotes from Vimal Kumar -
‘Happy to see Saina ready to compete’
‘Happy to see Saina ready to compete’
Saina has signed up to play in the China Open (November 15 to 20) and the Hong Kong Open (Nov. 22 to 27), tournaments Vimal felt would give her a taste of competition again.

Saina feels this may be end of her career.

I am surprised at her comment. Normally one would not let such thought plague the mind. This seems defeatist attitude. She should just through out negative thoughts and focus on work in hand.

She should take heart from Yuki's fighting spirit.SaniaFan wrote:Saina feels this may be end of her career.

Re: Saina Nehwal Thread - WR#1 on April 2,2015
Saina has made it to the SF at Malaysian open grand prix gold. Ajay Jayaram lost in the mens QF today while other Indians lost early. So, It would be appropriate to now discuss this in Saina's thread.
At Victor Far East Malaysia Masters 2017 (Grand Prix Gold)
[R1] (1) Saina NEHWAL (IND,10) d. (Q) Chasinee KOREPAP (THA,229) 21-9 21-8
[R2] (1) Saina NEHWAL (IND,10) d. Hanna RAMADINI (INA,46) 21-17 21-12
[QF] (1) Saina NEHWAL (IND,10) d. (8) Fitriani FITRIANI (INA,40) 21-15 21-14
Next,
[SF] (1) Saina NEHWAL (IND,10) vs. (5) YIP Pui Yin (HKG,30)

Saina easily goes thru to the final.
At Victor Far East Malaysia Masters 2017 (Grand Prix Gold)
[SF] (1) Saina NEHWAL (IND,10) d. (5) YIP Pui Yin (HKG,30) 21-13,21-10
Next,
[F] (1) Saina NEHWAL (IND,10) vs. Pornpawee Chochuwong (THA,67)
Chochuwong was a 2016 world junior finalist. So, she will be better than her ranking. Still. a match that Saina should win.

And Saina is vey close to back to be at her best by winning the grand prix gold title.

[F] (1) Saina NEHWAL (IND,10) d. Pornpawee Chochuwong (THA,67) 22-20 22-20
Saina came back from down in both games to beat the youngster. Great to see her do that just 3 months after return from a major injury.

Re: Saina Nehwal Thread - WR#1 on April 2,2015
Saina is getting back with Gopi again. Strange!? I thought she was doing quite well with Vimal Kumar prior to and after the injury. Gopi anyway has a lot on his plate. Any thoughts?
