So, after 5 games, the leaders (qual: avg, 25, SR > 140) by SR are:

Jadeja, Hooda, Shaw, Padikkal, Unadkat, Shahrukh, SAY, Samson, Tripathi, Dhawan, Mayank.

Wrt commercialization, it depends upon the national mood. I can't say from outside what is appropriate. It may be the right thing to play and generate income from that economic activity, which seems to be relatively safe. Or, it may be totally wrong and tone-deaf. For once, no opinion. :-) :-(

My opinion is that sports could be a welcome distraction specifically at this time for even COVID patients! As long as the IPL does not impede the COVID efforts, I would hope that season can continue!

Seriously though, it will be very difficult for IPl to conclude this season successfully! I am almost waiting for some of the foreign players to leave, as the situation gets more grim

They are leaving. Tye just left. Even Ashwin has withdrawn for the time being.

What IPL, BCCI, and ultra rich players can do is setup temporary beds in regional stadia, create passage for oxygen supply, fund to accelerate vaccine production. That will go a long way.

37 runs scored of final over for 62 runs of 28 balls, 3 wickets for 13 runs off 4 overs and a direct hit run out of Dan Christian

He has been having a sensational IPL season this year
Absolutely incredible stuff from Jadeja. 62* off 28 balls (including 36 off the last over -- 37 if you include the no-ball that was credited to his side), 4-1-13-3 with the ball, including absolute beauties to clean bowl Maxwell and the previously-unstoppable AB DeVilliers, and of course the run out of Christian with a stunning direct hit.

That he is currently the greatest all-format all-rounder in world cricket is evident from his last 2 tests: 57, 1/15 & 2/28 at the MCG, 28* and 4/62 at the SCG.

I update the batting leaderboard more often but not as much the bowling one because the bowling stats are even worse. This is because the marquee event in bowling, a wicket, is rare. But, it matters a lot and games are won or lost because of that. A six is also rare but the impact of a six is not as much as a wicket in a game. But, 5 games are gone. So, perhaps a decent time to try to see who the good Indian bowlers have been thus far.

Let's put a qual of 4 wickets. You have the Economy Rate capturing runs/over, i.e., how containing a bowler is. And, you have the SR, wickets/ball, capturing how wicket-taking a bowler is. Then, you have average, which is runs/wicket, which sort of captures something in between, I think. Not happy with average being the be-all stat. But, no single stat is a be-all stat.

So, here are the leaders who have at least taken 4 wickets (Avg/ER).

HV Patel (11/8.4), Avesh Khan (12/7.6), RD Chahar (15/6.9), A. Mishra (16.4/7.5), DLC (17/7.9), Unadkat (20/6.7), Arshdeep (21.4/8.2), Khaleel (21.8/7.3).

A few things are clear. Chahar and Mishra seem to be the best leggies. Chahar should be given a run in the matches before the WC and chosen if he does okay. We have lost the opportunity to give him some good experience.

Wrt the pacers, it is important to have a good average and have a good ER. It seems the choices would be the ex-India players: DLC, Unadkat, and Khaleel. All three of these have not been treated well by our selectors. We need to give them chances in the pre-world cup matches. IF they can keep their form in the IPL. Avesh Khan is also a good prospect it seems. Tall, lanky, bowls with speed. And can give the ball a whack with the bat. Prasidh Krishna looks pretty crappy to me wrt control.

Here you go, bravo Pat Cummins. I liked this guy even earlier compared to his other Aussie mates. He’s not as boorish as them. Just goes on about his job well. And, yes, he can bat well too. You all know I like strike bowlers who can bat well.

Great knock from Prithvi Shaw today, but he was helped by the fact that Cummins didn't bowl much to him in the early part of the innings. (I liked the fact that Shaw was more circumspect when playing Cummins, though). Eoin Morgan is proving to be a very poor IPL captain, no matter how inspired he is when leading England. It may be a good idea to rest him, and have Shakib take over as captain for a games. That Shakib has been kept on the sidelines is ludicrous in itself.

Tripathi played 3 in Mumbai and 2 in Chennai
Padaikkal played two in Chennai and two in Mumbai

Prasen, average is a good comparison when u need to compare two team members or opponents who played in same series. In this IPL, Chennai pitch behaved so differently from Mumbai. Total runs score on Mumbai pitch was almost 400 runs more than Chennai. I guess the numbers at the end of IPL will probably balance out. Would it make sense to use a weighted average based on the runs scored in the match as the basis for our calculation to get averages?

For example, when total 400 runs is scored in a game and your score is 40 runs, your weighted score for that match is 0.1. U add the numbers and then average it out to get weighted average(not outs will be handled in same way as the regular average). Would be curious to see if the standings would change dramatically for this approach over the average method.

Absolutely. I am just lazy. I fully recognize the futility of using regular stats because they are lacking.

On a parochial note, KKR's McCallum roasted the Kolkata openers and top order for selfish play. He asked them to hit and they kept taking singles to keep their averages high. Gill has stated publicly that SR is over-rated. McCallum said that he will make changes. More power to him. At least one of the top 3 needs to go, most possibly both openers. I have become a huge fan of Shaw and Padikkal in this tournament.

I would open with the South Indians. Venkatesh Iyer and Karun Nair. Or get those guys in and move the rest of the players around. Might as well go back to opening with Narine if he is playing. Or open with Karthik even though he is handy closing. Or whoever. I would drop Morgan, Narine, Prasidh Krishna, and Gill. Narine when he is not chucking is no great shakes. Get in Nair, Iyer, and Gurkeerat. Mavi, Cummins, Varun, Shakib, and Russell-Iyer should be able to complete 20 overs with Gurkeerat providing extra flexibility.

So: Tripathy, Iyer, Rana, Nair, Gurkeerat, Karthik, Shakib/Cutting, Russell, Cummins, Varun, Mavi.

Just based on the first five games in IPL. I calculated the stats for the following five players using the above method. I should have calculated to 3rd decimal place

Shaw 0.09
Padaikkal 0.12 in 4 games (average skewed heavily by the not out)
Jadeja 0.10
Hooda around 0.10
SKy 0.10

My guess is this may not make a huge difference when seen over 100s of games to go that extra mile.

Shubhman Gill, Washington are some of the players who have disappointed big time in this IPL. Washington got couple of opportunities to show that he could bat.

Yes, over the long run, it will not matter that much which stat we use especially for players who are distinctly different wrt performance. For close players, it may matter a bit.

I am a big fan for rewarding a not-out. If someone made the same number of runs with the same SR, then the not-out batter is the one I would choose. (And then ask her to hit more in the next innings.) It is difficult to make runs over two innings than over one. In the case of two innings (because you were not out in one), you will have to get set twice, etc. Of course, if the SR is going down because people are preserving their wicket, then I will ask them to hit more in the next innings. And, since my sorting is wrt SR, they will be ranked later anyway.

Atithee, any comments about Bumrah's performance after ... ahem taking a break? ;-)
