Started with par, then birdie second, bogey third, birdie fourth; bogeyed sixth, seventh and nine for two-over front nine; Eagle on 12th brought him to level, bogey 13th, birdie 16th and 18th -- ooohh what a round - ONE EAGLE, FOUR BIRDIES AND FIVE BOGEYS - TIED 50TH;
Leader at Volvo - Ernie Els with flawless 8-under 64

US PGA - St. Jude Classic
Daniel Chopra one-under 70 - tied ninth. Was three-under after 16, but had bogeys on 17 and 18.
Arjun Atwal -- seven-over -- bad run continues -- two triples in the round - tied 125th
Leader at St. Jude: Vaughn Taylor at 5-under 66
By the way: Zhang Lian-wei is tied fourth at 3-under 68.

Mitsubishi Diamond Cup - JAPAN
Jeev: shot a 2-under 70 on first day for tied 14th.
Leader day 1: Masayuki Kawamura (6-under)
Second day: Jeev began with three bogeys on 1, 2, 3 -- then made up birdies on sixth, seventh and 10th and bogey 15th. One over for day and one-under for tournament - after 15.

UPDATE:
Jeev had another bogey on 17th and finished at 2-over for day and par for tournament. He was tied for 40. He had five bogeys today and three birdies. Must make up on third and fourth days.

FUTURES TOUR (WOMEN)
Smriti Mehra does not seem to be playing.

On the Nationwide in SAS Carolina, Kang Wook Soon is lying tied second after first round of six-under, one behind leader Bob Boyd.

Simi located!

Post by Joy Chakravarty »

Guess why Simi ainn't playing the Futures Tour event? That's because she got into the LPGA Corning Classic. Did not have the best of starts - tied 111th at three-over 75. Five bogies and two birdies.

Annika and Liselotee Neumann lead the tournament seven-under 65.

Did not even think of Simi at LPGA

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

Thanks Joy for Simi.

By the way, one of your all-time favs Seve Ballesteros seems set to call it a day because of arthritis. Sad end.

INDIAN GOLFERS ON THE MOVE - PLAYING ON FOREIGN TOURS

Good to see her playing an LPGA event (although not so good to see the results so far...). Playing on the Futures tour is pretty thankless -- it requires deep pockets and lots of commitment, since you can't really make ends meet unless you dominate that tour.

Jeev only hope this week

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

CONSOLIDATED INDIAN RESULTS ON VARIOUS TOURS

Only hope this week is Jeev Milkha Singh, the lone Indian to make cut from various Tours across the world. Daniel and Arjun Missed cut in US, Jyoti missed in Europe and Smriti missed in LPGA.

JAPAN: Mitsubishi Diamond Cup
Jeev started day at even par and tied 40th
Began on front nine, birdie second, bogeyed par four fifth, birdied seventh. Parred eighth and ninth. After nine, he is –1 for day and tournament. Tied 25th. This is a low-scoring event, a –5 today (third rd) could take Jeev to inside top 10 for sure.
PLAY STILL ON.

Current Leader: Tetsuji Hiratsuka, who broke away from four-way lead over night with a birdie on second and is now –7.

US PGA: St. Jude’s Classic
Disaster on final hole for Daniel
Daniel started on back nine (overnight –1): Birdied the 12th, double bogeyed the 14th, bogeyed the 18th; then again double bogeyed the first (lost four strokes in two successive holes); Then cam a BIRDIE SPREE – second, fifth, sixth and seventh as he clawed back to par for tournament. He parred the eighth and at even for tournament, was well inside cut line. Cut came at +1.

But DISASTER struck on ninth, Daniel’s last hole for the day. He shot a quintuple bogey, a +5 for single hole with a nine. He obviously went into water or lost ball more than once. In one single hole he lost five strokes and crashed out.

Arjun Atwal: (78 and 70)
A second round of one-under 70 did not help. He needed at least six-under to make cut. Began on front nine with birdies on second and seventh and bogey on sixth; Birdied 11th, 15 and 16 to be –4 for the day. He needed two more birdies and he could have made cut. But bogeyed 17th and double bogeyed 18th for a 70 and also crashed out.

Leader: David Toms (-12, rds of 67, 63);
Zhang (-2) shot a 72 and is tied 25th (68, 72) slipped from tied fourth overnight.
Am happy to see John Daly climb to tied 4th from t-21. He has rds of 71 and 65.

European PGA: Volvo PGA
Jyoti – 71 and 75 (Missed cut)
Rd 2: One birdie (11th) and four bogeys (1, 3, 6, 13) – three-over for day; 2-over for tournament – Cut came at par.

Leader: Justin Rosa at 11-u (67, 66); Els (-9, tied 2), Vijay (-5; tied 17) Jaidee (-4, tied 23); Monty (-4, tied 23); Ben Curits British Open champion missed cut

LPGA: Corning Classic
Smriti Mehra: 75 and 72 – Missed cut
Rd 1: two birdies 4th and 12th and five bogeys (8, 9, 13, 15, 18) – +3 for the day
Rd 2: Started on tenth: birdies on 13, 15th; bogey on 17 and then eighth (even for day)
Leader: Michelle Estill (-13 Rds 67 and 64); Annika Sorenstam is second at –12 (65, 67)

Nationwide: SAS Carolina
Kang Wook Soon dropped to eight from being tied second over night. He has rds of 65 and 72. Par is 71 here.
Leader: Tim Simpson (-10, 65, 67) and Brendan Jones, quite successful in Japan, is second –9; 68, 65).

Why we all love John Daly

Post by Joy Chakravarty »

Hi Kumar,

Journalists all over the world love John Daly because he makes for some great copies with either his brilliance or his seemingly foolish follies.

It is a natural human tendency to be in awe of a Superman, and also root for the downtrodden, the vulnerable. John Daly has both qualities.

Also, I feel given his constant fights with the small things of life, each of us develop some kind of a connect with him.

What do you say?

Kumar, if you see John Daly play live you will notice that a lot of spectators see a lot of him in themselves. Unlike many golfers who are fit and trim, John carries a heavy weight around his waste although it has become less lately. He also comes across as an ordinary guy - beer drinking, cigarette smoking - and with little hang ups. Some pro golfers have a big ego but not John. Lastly, people love to see him hit a golf ball a mile away.

John Daly

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

Kumar,
John Daly has a fascinating background and history. As Bhushan mentioned, he is like the rest of the human race -- normal with normal failings, beer, smoking et al.
He has lived through four marriages and bad break-ups -- the latest being his fourth wife being charged for drug peddling. And poor Daly did not even know about it.
He overcame all that and won his first PGA event in a decade this year.
And he is making a great comeback this year. With a little luck, he could get into top 50 and make it to the US Open.

Once at an event, he was among the last who made the cut and he played alone and finished the round in just over two and a half hours!!! ANd there were enough people following him.

As I love say, John, play it once more... win a Major

Jeev par for third day, tied 32nd

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

UPDATE ON JEEV

JAPAN: Mitsubishi Diamond Cup

Jeev ended the day par for the day and par for the tournament. His rounds (70, 74 and 72).

He had four birdies, 2, 7, 10, 16 and two bogeys 5th and 14th and one double on 11th. NOw he is tied for 32nd place.

A low scoring event,
Tetsuji Hiratsuka leading at -10 and Hideto Tanihara second at -8. Then three people tied at third at -4 and three more tied ninth at -3. Ten people at -2.

So Jeev has a chance of getting into top 15 with a decent round on last day. That will get him some World Ranking points and money for MOney List, where he is 19th.

Jeev two-under with two to go

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

JEEV NEWS FROM JAPAN

Jeev, par for the tournament and placed tied 32nd overnight, began with bogeys on third and fifth and slipped down the cliff. Then climbed back with birdies on sixth and seventh to be par for front nine.

On back nine, birdied the tenth and 13th to become two-under and tied 25th. Then three pars in a row. Has two holes left. Come on Jeev birdie-birdie finish will get you close to top 10.

Jeev gets into trouble first and then hauls himself back well.

Leader: Tetsuji Hiratsuka at -13, four ahead of Hideto Tanihara (-9)

Jeev finishes one-under

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

JEEV NEWS FROM JAPAN - JEEV FINISHES ROUND

Me and my wishful thinking. Instead of birdie-birdie finish, Jeev ended par-bogey and one-under for day and tournament.

He is tied 29th, but as play finishes, his position will change.

end of a loust week for Indian golfers.

Leader: Still Tetsuji Hiratsuka at -13 with nine to go, four ahead of Hideto Tanihara (-9) also with nine to go.
