Mukesh deals royal flush, wins Airtel Open

Mukesh does it again...

Here is the report

Mukesh deals royal flush, wins Airtel Open

MUMBAI, February 18: If they say 'Fortune favors the
Brave' and 'Experience Pays', there could have been
only one winner today. With nerves of steel Mukesh
Kumar played a rock solid round of par to capture the
inaugural Airtel Open title, his fourth win on the
Amby Valley PGAI Tour 2004-05 season, even as the two
Chandigarh lads Harinder Gupta and Ranjit Singh,
leaders overnight crumbled with rounds of six over and
four over respectively to hand the title and the Rs.
1,62000 winner's cheque on a silver platter to Mukesh.

Three groups behind the leaders, last week's champion
at the Hero Honda Open West in Pune, Arjun Singh,
almost pulled off another spectacular comeback and a
repeat of last week. The Delhi pro shot a
scintillating six-under sixty-four to jump into joint
second spot with Kolkata's Feroz Ali. Arjun and Feroz
split the second and third place earnings to take home
Rs. 87,500 each.

Starting his final round at 2-over par and ten shots
of the lead, Arjun Singh dropped a shot on the par-3
second. With consecutive birdies on the 4th, 5th, 6th
and 7th, Arjun reached the turn at three-under and was
standing on the par-3 tenth on a confidence high. He
went onto birdie the tenth and eleventh holes before
dropping his second shot on the par-4 twelfth. The
lanky golfer dropped another shot on the fifteenth
before repairing the damage with a birdie on the easy
par-5 sixteenth. The icing on the cake came on the
final hole as Arjun was safely on the green in two
leaving himself an 12-feet uphill putt for an eagle.
Taking absolutely no time over the putt, stand 'n'
deliver it was as the ball was heading nowhere but the
centre of the cup. The eagle three saw Arjun match his
front nine and a four round tally of 4-under 276.

Halfway leader Feroz Ali had it all in his game today
to render the rest of the field helpless. Feroz
started the day at three under par and after he
completed his front nine in one under, Feroz was
looking set to mount the challenge and showed glimpses
of the form that saw him won the Indian Open in 1998.
But it wasn't to be as Feroz could only manage pars on
the first six holes on the back nine. Aiming for the
eighteenth fairway on the easy par-5 16th, Feroz
pulled his tee shot onto the first fairway but the
length and angle left him with just a seven iron and a
clear line to the green. Feroz left his second short
of the green on the left and a careless chip saw Feroz
send his ball all the way through the green into the
right hand side bunker. The mistake cost him dear and
saw him bogey where he must have given himself the
birdie before the chip. The Indian Airlines-sponsored
pro birdied the last hole and came in tied second for
the Open.

With a sparkling seven under yesterday that saw him
lead by two shots after round three, all eyes were on
Harinder Gupta to see him win his first title as a
professional on the Amby Valley PGAI Tour. The
22-year-old looked pretty solid as he managed the turn
even par without affecting his score. With back to
back bogeys on the 12th and 13th Harinder saw himself
reach the par-5 sixteenth at six under for the
tournament holding onto a one shot lead over playing
partner Mukesh Kumar. A sliced tee shot saw Harinder's
ball head out of bounds and his chances for the title
fade away. He could finally manage a triple bogey
eight on the hole and when Mukesh made birdie a four
shot swing was inevitable. With a final drop shot on
the 17th a disgusted Harinder Gupta stormed in and out
of the club house turning in a dismal card of six-over
76 and a four round aggregate of two-under 278 for
tied fourth position with home club-mate Ranjit Singh.

"All I had to do was aim for a par which is difficult
to come by in this course. And one bad shot from
Harinder was all that set up the victory for me," said
the Mhow-based pro. With this victory Mukesh extended
his lead on the money chart for this season on the
Amby Valley PGAI Tour. He is sitting comfortably with
total earnings of Rs. 13,40,600 in 13 starts and a
margin of Rs. 3,10,666 over Ashok Kumar who has been
out of sorts lately.

Mehul Rastogi bags amateur title: Mehul Rastogi bagged

Chowrasia opens up six stroke lead at Singhania Open-Day 3

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

Chip-Putt Chow is back and how

Chowrasia opens up six stroke lead at Singhania Open

NOIDA, February 25: Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia opened up a huge six
stroke lead courtesy a three-under 69 in the penultimate round of the
Rs
10-lakh Sir Padampat Singhania Open being played at the par-72, Noida
Golf
Course The leader’s tally stands at nine-under 207 in the 15th leg of
the
Amby Valley PGAI Tour..
Chandigarh’s Amritinder Singh occupied the second position at
three-under
213 while another Chandigarh golfer Ranjit Singh and Bangalore’s S
Madaiah
were tied third at level-par 216.
Chowrasia is keenly looking forward to Saturday’s round. Every golfer
coming out of a break looks forward to regaining his touch and form at
the
earliest. Chowrasia, having done that over the past four Amby Valley
PGAI
Tour events, is now sitting on the brink of victory. However, hard as
he
might try, there is one memory the Kolkatan is finding hard to erase.
Just
over nine months ago, Chowrasia was sitting in a similar position at
the
PGAI-TSM Open at this very golf course. A four-stroke lead going into
the
final round is normally considered healthy but the ever-smiling pro was
upstaged by a resurgent Ashok Kumar who ran away with a superb victory.
“That memory keeps coming back no matter how hard I try to keep it
away,”
said the 26 year old Chowrasia. “However, I know everything is
different
this time round, the competition, playing conditions, name it. I will
back
myself to win all the way tomorrow,” he added.
Today, Chowrasia, who walked onto the first tee box with a two stroke
lead,
birdied the fourth and sixth. On the fourth, his pitching wedge shot
nearly
found the cup for eagle but he had to settle for birdie. This happened
on
the sixth as well, where he missed another eagle by a whisker. A bogey
on
the seventh, where his tee shot found the fairway bunker, was followed
by a
birdie on the eighth. Two-under at the half-way stage, Chowrasia
dropped
another shot on the tenth but recovered well with birdies on the14th
and
17th. “Every aspect of my game was in place today and my wrist felt
stronger too. I need to get some physiotherapy done on it but
otherwise
everything was fine,” said the golfer, referring to his wrist injury,
sustained in a motorcycle accident in mid-2004.
That Amritinder Singh is a dangerous competitor is a well documented
fact.
The 33-year old Chandigarh pro has from time to time displayed his
prowess
not just on the Amby Valley PGAI Tour but on the Asian circuit as well.
He
will however be keen to card a victory which has eluded him since the
Hero
Golf Chandigarh Open in 2000.
Amritinder’s round started with a par followed by a bogey. Birdies on
the
fourth, eighth and ninth undid the poor start, placing the golfer at
two-under on the tenth tee. On his back-nine, birdies on the 11th and
14th,
interspersed by a bogey on the 13th handed him a card of three-under
69. “I
played really well but made a few unforced errors,” said Amritinder.
“I
have attacked throughout the week and plan to continue with the same
game-plan tomorrow. I will go for nothing short of gold,” he added.
SCORES (after 54 holes): 207 Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia(70,68,69);
213
Amritinder Singh(68,76,69); 216 Ranjit Singh(71,72,73), S
Madaiah(70,70,76);
217 Randhir Ghotra(78,69,70), Shiv Prakash(72,72,73), Rafick
Ali(71,72,74);
218 Rohit Choudhary(73,72,73); 219 Sanjay Kumar(71,71,77); 220 Dinesh
Kumar(74,74,72), Amit Dube(74,71,75), Harinder Gupta(72,73,75), Mohd.
Islam(67,75,78) Amateurs: 224 Shaurya Singh(72,76,76); 235 Praveen

I hate it when somebody talks about Rs in millions. Somehow I can't stand it. I in general like Redif reporting, but this million and billion  when we are talking about Indian currency puts me off.

Chowrasia wins Singhania Open golf

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

FULL REPORT, THOUGH A LITTLE LATE

Scintillating Chowrasia wins Singhania Open golf

NOIDA, February 26: Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia, who missed most of the 2004-05 Amby Valley PGAI Tour season due to fractured wrist, put that very wrist to brilliant use to romp home to a convincing win at the Rs
10-lakh Sir Padampat Singhania Open played at the par-72, Noida Golf Course.

Chowrasia’s tally of eight-under 280 courtesy a final round 73 was six
better than friend and roommate Rafick Ali’s aggregate of 286. Chowrasia
pocketed Rs 1,62,000 for his win while Rafick had to settle for Rs 1,12,000.
Rafick leapfrogged ahead of Sir Padampat Sighania Sports Academy
sponsored Kanpur pro Shiv Prakash courtesy a round of 69. Shiv had to settle for the tied third position with Chandigarh’s Ranjit Singh at one-under 287.

Another Chandigah golfer Amritinder Singh finished fourth at level-par
288. Chowrasia is a delighted man. Anybody who has had a forced lay-off
from the sport for over six months would be if they managed a win in only their fifth come-back appearance. Rafick Ali though forced into the second position, was actually a beneficiary of his friend’s win. The duo, two of the best friends on the Amby Valley PGAI Tour have a unique deal
going. The winner, on any Amby Valley PGAI Tour event, buys the other
a flight ticket back home. This deal is slightly altered during a pro-am
where the winner shares the prize money with the other.

Coming back to the final round, Chowrasia was a shade tense before
teeing off. Reason being, he had been in a similar position in May 2004, when after going into the final round of the PGAI-TSM Open at the same
venue, with a four stroke lead he was beaten to the post by a marvelous Ashok Kumar display. “That did play on my mind for a while today but after the front nine, I was pretty certain that the title was in my pocket,” said the 26-year old.

Chowrasia’s round started with a birdie but he neutralized the good
work with a dropped shot on the sixth. For most part of his outward
journey, the Kolkatan led by eight or nine strokes. On his back-nine, Chowrasia bogeyed the 11th but made up with a birdie on the 14th. A bogey on the 17th followed but by that time the title was well and truly secured. “It feels great winning and my confidence is now back to where it was last season,” said the golfer who finished third on the 2003-04 Order of Merit.

Rafick Ali though happy for his friend, would have any day taken the
winner’s cheque. However, the 34-year old would be well and truly
pleased with the way he fought back from nowhere to secure the second position.

Rafick had one game-plan today and that was to attack every pin that
came within his sight. Two birdies resulted from his first two holes
courtesy this game-plan. A bogey on the sixth was followed by a birdie finish to his outward journey. On his back-nine birdies on the 13th and 14th were followed by a bogey on the 17th. There were tense moments when Rafick reached the 18th with Shiv Prakash breathing down his neck for the tied-second place.

Shiv’s bogey finish and Rafick’s par ensured the latter cruised ahead.
“I am happy with the way I played but I have three second place finishes
to my credit this season and only one win. I would have liked to have won a few more,” he added.

Shaurya Singh wins amateur title: Shaurya Singh won the amateur title
by a huge margin of 15 strokes over Praveen Kumar. The winner tallied 305 for four days.

SCORES (after 72 holes):
280 Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia(70,68,69,73);
