Jeev made some good progress to narrow the OOM gap in the 2nd round. With a 3 under round, Jeev jumped to T12 position. However, the second round is yet to be completed and positions can change, but he is in a good position to take the lead or narrow the gap with Mark Brown in the Order of Merit list. Mark Brown is most likely to miss the cut.

But Jeev had a scare today and he was lucky not to be disqualified due to a rule infringement by Jeev. Thanks to the first round suspension due to weather, Jeev was alterted about a rule infringement that Jeev didn't realize at that time, and he put a one shot penalty on himself and escaped. If this rule infringement had come to light after he had signed his score, he would have been disqaualified.
Here is a short report on Jeev's progress and the drama.
It was a day of drama for the Indian as he incurred a one-stroke penalty after completing his first round this morning due to a rule infringement pertaining to the preferred lie ruling, signing for an eventual 73.

But rules officials, who were alerted overnight that Singh might have infringed the rules during Thursday's first round, went through the TV footages and the Indian agreed that he had run afoul with the preferred lie ruling by mistake.

"It was good that someone called that in, otherwise I would have been disqualified," said Singh.

"The rule is when you mark the ball, you got to have it in your hand. Once you leave it, it's in play. On number four yesterday, I picked it up and placed it right back and that's why I got a one shot penalty. One of the referees called in. I'm glad that happened, otherwise I won't be playing now," he said.

Jeev has come in contention as he is just 1 stroke behind the leader Chapchai Nirat as they finish the front nine in the last round. Here is the current leaderbaord for the players fighting for the championship. Go Jeev!!!

1 Chapchai NIRAT THA 70 68 65 +1 -9 6
2 Jeev Milkha SINGH IND 73 68 67 -3 -8 8
2 Padraig HARRINGTON IRL 72 70 66 -3 -8 8
4 Thomas BJORN DEN 72 67 68 E -6 7
4 Ernie ELS RSA 66 70 71 E -6 7

Update: Nirat made a bogey on his 7th hole which results in a three way tie between Jeev Harrington and Nirat! Go Jeev!

Jeev and Harrington (and Charlie Wi) are playing together and they are two groups behind Niratm who is playing Lam Chich Bing and Phil Mickelson. However, Phil made a triple bogey on 7th to fall out of top 10. The 2nd last group consist of European stalwats Ernie Els, Thomas Bjorn and Simon Dyson.

Update: Jeev and Harrington made par on the 9th, while Wi made a birdie to join Ernie and Bjorn at T4. So we have 3 players on -8 and 3 players at -6. And as I write, Rory MCILROY also joins the -6 group.

Current positions
1 Jeev Milkha SINGH IND 73 68 67 -3 -8 9
1 Padraig HARRINGTON IRL 72 70 66 -3 -8 9
1 Chapchai NIRAT THA 70 68 65 +2 -8 8
4 Rory MCILROY NIR 70 68 72 -3 -6 10
4 Thomas BJORN DEN 72 67 68 E -6 9
4 Ernie ELS RSA 66 70 71 E -6 9
4 Charlie WI KOR 70 71 67 -1 -6 9

Update: Everybody in the above list make par on their next hole except Charlie Wi. After Jeev, the next best Indian is Ghei who just made two bogeys on 11th and 12th to go down to T16. Daniel Chopra is having a horrible day as he played one single hole (par 5 7th) in 10 strokes  He is +8 for the day after 14 holes. Jyoti finished his 2 over round and currently lies T34th.

Update: :bounce: :bounce: Jeev makes a birdie on 11th to take the sole lead. Harrington pars the 11th while Nirat makes another bogey on 10th. So the scene for top 3 has changed with Jeev at #1, Harrington #2, Nirat #3, while Rory, Ernie and Bjorn share the #4 spot.

Update: Wow!! Impressive 2nd shot by Jeev on 12 to comout of woods and and outstanding chip on 3rd to set up a close par putt. That was a great save by Jeev!!! MCILROY makes a bogey. So top 5 are:

1 Jeev Milkha SINGH IND 73 68 67 -4 -9 12
2 Padraig HARRINGTON IRL 72 70 66 -3 -8 12
3 Chapchai NIRAT THA 70 68 65 +3 -7 11
4 Thomas BJORN DEN 72 67 68 E -6 11
4 Ernie ELS RSA 66 70 71 E -6 11

Nice tee shot on 13th by Jeev while Harrington's shot just went out in the rough, but he'll be OK too. Ernie makes a bogey on 12th. Jeev makes a long birdie putt and leaves it short :-( . And Jeevs makes his first bogey as his par putt lips out. Harrington also had a difficult par putt but he makes it. So Jeev and Harrington are now tied at the top.

1 Jeev Milkha SINGH IND 73 68 67 -3 -8 13
1 Padraig HARRINGTON IRL 72 70 66 -3 -8 13
3 Chapchai NIRAT THA 70 68 65 +3 -7 11
4 Thomas BJORN DEN 72 67 68 E -6 12
5 Rory MCILROY NIR 70 68 72 -2 -5 13
5 Ernie ELS RSA 66 70 71 +1 -5 12

Good tee shots by both Jeev and Harrington on par 3 14th. Jeev is closer to the hole but not close enough for a birdie putt. Harrington plays his long birdie putt but misses. Now Jeev plays his birdie putt and misses by few inches for a tap in par. Harrington's turn for the par putt from 6 ft and he makes it too. Meanwhile Bjorn also bogeys the 13th. Over to 15th.

1 Jeev Milkha SINGH IND 73 68 67 -3 -8 14
1 Padraig HARRINGTON IRL 72 70 66 -3 -8 14
3 Chapchai NIRAT THA 70 68 65 +4 -6 12
4 Rory MCILROY NIR 70 68 72 -2 -5 14
4 Thomas BJORN DEN 72 67 68 +1 -5 13
4 Ernie ELS RSA 66 70 71 +1 -5 13

Update: Harrington's tee shot went into the crowd while Jeev keeps his ball in fairway. Only 7 players are in red in the 4th round. Very difficult layout. Only Harrington is bogey free for the day. Harrington plays his 2nd shot from the rough and he could not get onto the green. Jeev's turn and safely on the green. Harrington gets ready for his chip which goes 12 ft pass the hole. It will be difficult for him to keep off a bogey. Jeev plays his birdie putt, but he leaves it short and it will be difficult par putt. Superb putt for Harrington to save the par. Now it's Jeev's turn for par putt from 6 ft. And Jeev makes it too. Over to par 4 16th. Earlier MCILROY dropped out of top 5 with a bogey on 15th.

1 Jeev Milkha SINGH IND 73 68 67 -3 -8 15
1 Padraig HARRINGTON IRL 72 70 66 -3 -8 15
3 Chapchai NIRAT THA 70 68 65 +4 -6 14
4 Thomas BJORN DEN 72 67 68 +1 -5 14
4 Ernie ELS RSA 66 70 71 +1 -5 14

Errant tee shot by Jeev puts him in difficult position on the 16th hole. Jeev will need to play an outstanding 2nd shot from the rough. I miised the Harrington's tee shot. Chapchai plays a tee shot 40 yards into water! Jeev plays his shot and some 40 yards short of hole. Oops! Harrington had a good chance but his shot went pass the green and slopes sown to water! A costly mistake by Padraig gives advantage to Jeev. Go Jeev! Good 3rd shot by Jeev but still a difficult par shot for him from about 10ft. Padraig is taking a drop. He will have to play a difficult up and down after the drop. Harrington is calling for a referee as he is not sure where to take the drop shot. Commentators are saying that whole tournament his here. Finally Harrington drops and takes his shot. Good 4th shot as it passes the hole by just 8ft. Jeev takes the par putt but leaves it just short for tap in bogey :( Harrington may escape with a bogey and a tie with Jeev. But Harrington misses his bogey putt by inches and so its a double bogey for him. So Jeev takes the lead! Two holes left. Go Jeev!

1 Jeev Milkha SINGH IND 73 68 67 -2 -7 16
2 Padraig HARRINGTON IRL 72 70 66 -1 -6 16
3 David GLEESON AUS 72 67 71 -2 -5 17
3 Thomas BJORN DEN 72 67 68 +1 -5 15
3 Ernie ELS RSA 66 70 71 +1 -5 15
3 Chapchai NIRAT THA 70 68 65 +5 -5 15

Quite a few players including Ernie with a chance now as 4 players are just 2 shots behind. One thing is sure, Jeev has more or less ensured Asian Order of Merit. That will be a good achievement. Jeev plays a good tee shot on par 3 17th. Harrington also plays a good shot. Harrington plays first and his birdie shot misses the hole. Jeev's turn and he also misses the birdie putt. Both make par on 17th and go to the par 5 18th. While Ernie makes a birdie on 16th to tie with Harrington and just one stroke away from Jeev. It is very close and it is between Ernie, Harrington and Jeev. But for now Jeev leads!

1 Jeev Milkha SINGH IND 73 68 67 -2 -7 17
2 Ernie ELS RSA 66 70 71 E -6 17
2 Padraig HARRINGTON IRL 72 70 66 -1 -6 17

Jeev goes to bunker after first shot. Padraig has given himself chance to make a chip in eagle with his 2nd shot in the rough just outside the green. Meanwhile Ernie misses a birdie on 16th by half inch. Excellent 3rd shot by Jeev to give himself a birdie chance.

Harrington misses the eagleputt, but he will have a birdie putt to tie with Jeev. If Jeev makes the birdie putt Harrington will be out. Jeev misses and makes the par. :( Harrington has a 5 ft putt ot tie with Jeev. Will he make it or not. And he misssssesssssssssit. So Harrington finishes one stroke behind. But its not over yet as Ernie can make a birdie for a play off.

Ernie to play his 2nd shot. An eagle can make Ernie champion, a birdie will tie with Jeev and it'll be a play off. A par means Jeev wins! So some more drama left. Ernie has a tree right in front but it won't interfere with his line. Ernie plays and it goes into bunker. So Ernie can't make an eagle except a miracle. Ernie plays his 3rd shot and he is on the green. But its not an easy putt. So Ernie will need to putt from about 20 to 25 ft. Its not impossible, but much more difficult than Harrington (who missed it from 5 ft). Ernie getting ready for his birdie putt. And I lose the transmission. Oh man! My internet connection is very slow for some reason. Live score shows that Ernie misses the birdie putt. That means Jeev is the CHAMPIONNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
woohoo woohoo woohoo
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Still the last group (including Phil Mickelson) is on the field, but no more drama left as all three of them had a bad day.

What a day for Jeev as he overcame 5 stroke deficit to win here in Singapore. So now he has 4 wins in 2008 in three different tours, European, Asian and Japan - just like 2006. Well done Jeev!!!! With this, Jeev should break into top 50 once again. That also means he can play all 4 majors and all big tournaments next year.

Thanks Ajay for detailed updates ... Watched all play on Star Sports ... Padraig Harrington's double bogey on 16th gave advantage to Jeev ... But Ernie Els played superb round ... He was unlucky as his minimum 3 birdies opportunities missed by couple of inches including 15-foot birdie chance on last hole for tie and play-off ... As Jeev mentioned in his interview that today Golfing Gods were on his side.

So Jeev won richest tournament on Asian tour with Singapore Open title by 1 stroke ... This is Jeev's sixth Asian Tour victory, worth US$792,500, raised his Asian Tour season's tally to US$1.4 million ... Jeev also made history by becoming the first player to surpass US$1 million in earnings in a single season of Asian tour ... Now he is US$655,000 ahead of 2nd place Mark Brown.

At US$5 million Barclays Singapore Open - Final Standing

1 Jeev Milkha Singh 73 68 67 69 - 7 $792,500.00
T22 Gaurav Ghei 74 71 66 76 + 3 $ 50,250.00
31 Shiv Kapur 74 72 73 70 + 5 $ 42,000.00
T32 Jyoti Randhawa 75 69 72 74 + 6 $ 37,000.00
T41 S S P Chowrasia 70 76 75 70 + 7 $ 30,500.00
T58 Digvijay Singh 70 72 76 76 +10 $ 16,500.00
T68 Gaganjeet Bhullar 73 71 76 77 +13 $ 12,250.00

Congratulations to Jeev on a fabulous win in a world class field event. woohoo  :notworthy:
Singapore Open is considered Asia's Major.
To win with Harrington & Els chasing is a feather in Jeev's cap and should give him the confidence to win a Major soon.
The win seals the Order of Merit title as well, unless Mark Brown can win all 4 remaining events.....
Great day for Indian golf.
We are all proud of Jeev's feat !!!
Jeev will move to 43rd in the world rankings after this win.
So he will finish inside top 50 at the end of the year ensuring a Masters invite.

Fantastic performance by Jeev Milkha Singh. Superb victory in the Singapore Open, and he is virtually assured of the Asian Tour Order of Merit (which he also won in 2006). What a superb comeback year for Jeev.

Sadly, I was on a flight to Hong Kong, otherwise I might have been gone to Sentosa for the final round. (I had lunch right there just last week!). Jeev stayed in contention through the event, and then mounted such a fabulous surge on the final day. This really was a superb performance against a totally world-class field, with Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els (leader through much of the event!) and Phil Mickelson in the chasing pack. To have held off all of them and take the title is a HUGE achievement. CONGRATULATIONS, Jeev Milkha Singh!

By the way, I think the Singapore Open this year was a joint APGA/EPGA event again -- after a dispute over timing last year, when the Volvo Masters at Valderrama clashed with the dates of the Singapore Open (and Ernie Els chose to play the latter, much to the EPGA's annoyance). Great to have Jeev emerge champion at such a prestigious event -- perhaps his second-most prestigious triumph (after the one at Valderrama in 2006).

No, I don't think the Singapore Open is part of the 2009 schedule for the EPGA tour. However, the EPGA tour has been kind enough to make it an off week. The second tournament of the year, the UBS Hong Kong Open, begins on Nov 20, 2008.
