Re: World Chess Olympiad/ World Team Chess
Thanks for the nice summary, Sin hombre. So, it was a different format than the olympiad which is usually played every 2 years ( I think). The format favoured us but still a very good performance indeed.
Looks like Anand is finally on real decline now.

The other big difference I think was these were not calssical games but rapid games. However, there is no doubt this is a super achievement.

Can a moderator please move this to the General Chess thread? This is an ad but it may be useful to some. So, I do not mind but if someone can move it to the right thread, I will appreciate it. Thanks.

India beat Ukraine in the QF but lost in the SF to USA. Pretty good performance still.

Re: World Chess Olympiad/ World Team Chess
India (Mamallapuram) is hosting the Chess Olympiad for the first time.
With no Russia (banned) and China (covid constraints) not participating as well as some other top players, this is India's best chance to improve on the bronze medal finish from 2014.
India has 3 teams in both the open and women's sections. India B with Gukesh, Pragg, Nihal and Raunak is a team to watch out for.
After 3 rounds, all 6 Indian teams are at max points. R4 and onwards is the business end so let's see how they do tomorrow.

Re: World Chess Olympiad/ World Team Chess
China has not withdrawn due to Covid reasons , but it is some sort of a technical boycott and they are playing in other tournaments around the world as their world # 2 Ding Lerin and his teammates had turned up for a Candidates tournament in Madrid last month and that's where when the decision not to send their team to Chennai was taken.Sin Hombre wrote: ↑Sun Jul 31, 2022 6:55 pm India (Mamallapuram) is hosting the Chess Olympiad for the first time.

And the other nation to boycott the event was Pakistan who did in in protest to the Chess Olympiad Flame being taken around in J&K.

Re: World Chess Olympiad/ World Team Chess
They are not playing other tournaments around the world.
Ding Liren in fact missed out on qualification to the Candidates because of not being allowed to leave China. His whole story in this WC cycle is completely crazy. Karjakin who initially qualified to the Candidates (last 8 to decide WC challenger) got removed after he made pro-Putin comments after the Russian invasion. That spot would then have gone to the active player with the highest rating. Ding was inactive.
In a change from policy, China organized local tournaments for Ding to play so that he could meet the minimum games threshold. And then he went to the Candidates. At the Candidates, since he was only allowed to leave at the last minute, he arrived jetlagged and promptly lost his first match to Nepo who was one of the favourites. At the halfway stage, Ding was well behind the 2 favourites Nepo and Caruana.
Now, in another twist that favoured him, Magnus Carlsen who is the world champion, had said earlier in the year that he would not defend his WC crown unless he played Alireza Firouzja (next gen star) implying he had no desire to play someone from his own generation again for the crown. While it made sense (he beat Anand from the previous generation twice, and had beaten Karjakin, Caruana and Nepo from his generation to win 5 in a row), nobody took his comment seriously and assumed he was using it as leverage to change the format.
One of those who took his comment lightly was Caruana. At the halfway-stage, he was slightly behind Nepo and thinking that 2nd had no value, starting taking a lot of risks in the second half of the tournament. That went poorly for him and he slid down the rankings. Nakamura also did something similar to a lesser extent. End result was that Ding sneaked into the 2nd position.
And then Magnus confirmed he was not participating in the WC match so we now have Nepo vs Ding for the WC. Crazy story.
Anyways where does that bring us to your comment? China made it very hard for Ding to participate. Chinese #3 and #4 Wei Yi and Bu Xiangzhi have played ZERO tournaments outside China since the pandemic started. The only one playing regularly is Yu Yangyi but I believe he is based out of Europe.
China never gave the reason for withdrawal but is more likely than not, Covid related, given that their #1 missed out on Candidates and #3 and #4 have not been allowed to play a single tournament.

Re: World Chess Olympiad/ World Team Chess
Today's results, India 2 won again and stay on top after R4. India 1 drew despite being the higher seed and fell to the 7th spot.
Long way to go in the tournament.

India 2 won again and maintain their top position after R5.
Arjun won for India 1 to help them win 2.5-1.5 and they move up to 4th in the standings.
In the women's section, India 1 are the top seeds and are leading after R5, but next up is Georgia seeded #3 and also with a perfect record so far.

Re: World Chess Olympiad/ World Team Chess
Yesterday was a bad day despite Gukesh's win.
Both our lower boards lost for India 2 and we lost 1.5-2.5 to Armenia.
For India 1, Hari won a good game on board 1 but Sasi lost on board 4, which meant a draw against Uzbekistan.
Today was a rest day but we need wins from both our teams tomorrow for medal prospects.
India 1 plays India 3 , and India 2 plays Cuba.
