...is not a serious sport, folks. It is a rowdy activity carried on by the Brits and their former colonial outposts...... all masquerading as a sport. PKB
(Rowdy as in sledging, match fixing by players, etc)
It fought hard against the strong Kazakhstan but went down 16-11. Nice improvement as India had lost by more than 60 points when they last met 3 yrs back. India next plays Chinese Taipei and Srilanka
I must say pretty good stuff from the Indians to even lead 14-0 at one point but as always the case with inexperienced teams, failed to sustain the momentum to lose 22-36
From what I recall reading in the Calcutta newspapers two decades ago, the main competitors in India's rugby competitions are the La Martiniere Old Boys (LMOB, of whom our very own Bhushan is a distinguished one) and Armenians. Emil Vartazarian, the star of the Indian team in this match, is clearly an Armenian name. I presume the others mentioned in the report are LMOBs...
Wow... first win on home soil . The team has been strengthened by the arrival of seven Indian Origin players from UK. Hopefully with this, our ranking improves to around 60 in the near future:)
Impressive performance but a match India should have won as they missed many oppurtunities . Now we have to hope Malaysia and Kazaks beat Guam. I think Kazaks will but not so sure about Malaysia . Anyway much better performance that i expected from the Indians in the WC Qualifiers
And about the previous discussion rugby is a sport popular in India. Please do not forget that cricket is a non-Indian sport. If you only discuss sports which are Indian then why not discuss about Kabaddi only.
Rugby is very popular in Kolkata. India's recent rank is 86 in rugby. I am more into Indian rugby then cricket. Cricket got enough attention and now it is time for another sport to get attention or all the sports.
To be a major sporting nation we should concentrate on all sports and not on one.
Yeah if you guys want to know the difference between Aussie Rules, Canadian football, American Football, Rugby, Arena Football, Gaelic football and International football(not soccer) then ask for it. I will give you all the information.
I think the biggest hurdle in rugby getting more popular in India would be the quality of the grounds. Thanks to the weather it's tough to maintain grounds that are soft enough for rugby.
Welcome to the forum India1989 - yes, please do enlighten us about the subtle and not so subtle difference in the rules. I have a basic idea about the rules & terms and I love watching rugby but can't say I understand it completely!
Yes that's true. Rugby is not getting that popular in India. It needs to be popular. Yeah the weather is not kinda good but we can't blame all of it on weather. But you are right, weather does kind of softens the ground.
Thanks for welcoming me. I just joined sports india few days back and as I am interested in sports I joined it.
