Re: Rohan Belday thread

Post by gbelday »

Hello everyone,

Since there is a thread here for Rohan :), I figured I’ll update it from time to time. Some of you are in touch with me and already know how he’s doing.

2021 has been a bit rough. Lots of early round losses. He also grew a few inches, which is not a bad thing, and currently stands at 6’1”. The sudden growth (~6 inches) this past year caused some issues with his knees (Osgood Schattler’s). It sounds scarier than it is but basically there is a lot of pain in the knees that is growth related. Been to a few specialists and they assured that it’s nothing serious and will stop as soon he stops growing. Sliding and movement on clay especially are tough and he’s staying away from American green clay at the moment.

That said, we are managing the load and he has been playing junior ITFs. Staying away from USTA tournaments for now since the schedule there is a lot tougher (3 matches a day at times). ITFs are a lot better and you don’t play more than one singles and one doubles each day.

Although he had a lot of early losses this year, Rohan did pick up some good wins these past few months and came to the finals of the singles and doubles at the J5 in Abuja (Nigeria) this past week.

He is currently ranked at 493 junior ITF ranking. He working with a very good strength trainer 4x a week and there’s been a lot of progress (lower body especially) these past few months. His knees seem better and they didn’t hurt at all in Abuja. So maybe he stopped growing :)

He is continuing to train with Jay in NY (at Liezel Huber’s) and the focus has been to build weapons for the long term (especially the serve).

If he stays healthy, the goal is to start playing higher level tournaments (J4 and J3) for the rest of this year.

I’ll keep you all posted!! Thanks all!

Finally, Jay is doing something good and imparting his vast knowledge to a nextgen kid. Thanks Jay.

Thanks Gautam for the detailed update. It is very impressive that our son Rohan is ranked 493 among the world’s juniors at the age of 15. Looking forward to the 6 footer transitioning to G3-4 events this year, and starting to play Futures hopefully by this time next year. The half foot gain in height is actually hugely positive news. The knee issues are hopefully just a side-effect of growing fast.

Are the Abuja points already reflected in his ranking? Or is there a delay, like at Futures?

🙏

They are already reflected. Rankings are updated every Monday.

He is signed up for the second J3 in Santa Domingo starting on July 19. After that is the US Hardcourt nationals in Kalamazoo starting on Aug 6.

Awesome that he's reached near ideal height for tennis and is likely still growing! The "growing pains" should subside soon and hopefully we will see him surge up the rankings.

Our boy Rohan had a good run in the India ITF junior events (the last was a J200 in Kolkata, not sure if that equates to a J1 in the old system), making the singles QFs in all 3 weeks, losing each time to Korean players -- to the same guy in the last 2 weeks (Kim Jangjun, who won the Kolkata title). What I particularly liked was that his results against Kim were better the second time they played, Rohan taking a set off him in Kolkata.

As a result of that good run, Rohan is now ranked 157 among the juniors, at age 16. With a slight push up in the rankings, he should be able to play the junior Slams later in the year -- Wimbledon and the US Open particularly.

🙏 I forgot that there was a thread here :) only PKB would do that.

Going to play the J300 (J1) in Barranquilla in two weeks and then Indian Wells and J300 San Diego after that.

Working on a strength training block from Feb 15-Mar 10. That would the most important aspect for him this year.

Btw they are opening up the IW tournament this year to juniors from US and Canada. Rohan should make it to the main draw. He’s top 20 among Americans and Canadians.

Gautam it is very heartning to know about the potential Rohan is showing.

I just wish the very best to him and I am sure the sacrifice and the hard work both of you are putting in ,will eventually pay off.

Then I may make that trip to Indian Wells this time. I used to go every year in the heydays of LP/MB/Sania there, but have skipped the 2 hour drive the last several years!

Awesome Jay!! I will finally get to see you if you can make it..after all these years. Btw, Niru had really good things to say about you. This is the first time I met her and she is such a super human being. So down to earth and so very helpful. She watched all of Rohan’s matches and gave some really good insights. Her brother and Rohan’s coach (Jay D) were roommates back in NY. Such a small world.
