A tremendous upset actually, of the top seed. Isn't that perhaps the best win so far for Adil? Higher ranked than Marcel Ilhan of Turkey whom he upset recently. Very good indicators of Adil taking a next step in his career?

Same story of a big win followed by an unbelievably bad loss, by Adil.

[QF] Adil KALYANPUR (IND,1025) l. Valentin ROYER (FRA,1065), 16 06

This is crazy. The 19 year old has already had something like 5 or 6 wins against guys in the top 400-800 range, but every time, without fail, he gets blown out in straight sets in the next match. He should be ranked somewhere in the 700 by now and not having to play qualies at 15K and 25K events, but he has hardly crossed 1000 in ranking. I wonder what troubles him in these matches...

Generally, this kind of inconsistency often indicates a lack of discipline and/or mental focus. That is, they are capable of playing well when everything aligns correctly and the opposite is true if it doesn't.

Alternatively, you could also see this kind of result if someone is taking chances to get to the next level. That is, going for lots of risky shots (for e.g.) and then having good results when they are falling but have poor results when they don't.

Don't know anything about the work ethic and focus of Adil, so have no real idea why he is this inconsistent.

Siddhanth Banthia, sophomore at the Wake Forest University, is playing at the $15K in East Lansing, Michigan, USA. He lost in the Q3 of singles after 2 wins. In doubles, Sid and James Story (GBR) pulled a 64 63 upset of the 2nd seeds A.J. Catanzariti (USA) and Jody Mignley (ANT). They play the SF against Jacob Dunbar (USA) and David Fox (GBR)

Update: Sid and James went down in the SF after a good start, 64 67(4) [7-10]

It's time India returned to hosting 10-12 Futures annually. This year, the men had very few. Playing Futures at the end of the year is a tough way to go, because the draws are much tougher. Hard to see Indian players ranked just outside the top-1000 having to slog in the qualifiers of this lowest-level Futures event. That two of them were knocked out in Q1 makes it all the worse!

This year in fact we did not host a single mens futures. I think the main reason for that was withdrawal of ATP points from ITF futures early this year. Now, that major part of those points have been restored, hopefully we will see at least 10 futures this year. Looking back we had as many as 19 futures in 2015, then came down to 6 in 2016, 9 in 2017, 4 in 2018 and now none. We need more of these tournaments for our second and third tier to get opportunities to move up the ranking ladder. And have more than just 2 challengers every year.

That's an excellent upset win for Siddhant Banthia! He plays no. 6 singles for Wake Forest University, but any college-level competition seems to improve one's game!
