Braunschweig Challenger 90, Germany (Clay)
Sumit is back after a couple of week's break in Germany and Balaji and Arjun are playing with their respective doubles partners. So, opening a thread for this.
[R1] (7) Sumit Nagal (IND,150) vs. Mohamed Safawat (EGY,170)
Sumit lost once to Safawat at Australian open qualies. Hope on clay Sumit will reverse that result.
[R1] Arjun Kadhe (IND) / Teymuraz Gabashvili (RUS) vs. Igor Sijsling (NED) / Glen Smits (NED)
[R1] N. Sriram Balaji (IND) / Luca Maragroli (SUI) vs. Sandro Ehrat (SUI) / Lucas Gerch (GER)

Wow! It’s been a tough year for PG with injures and poor form. Hope he can turn things around in the US events later this summer.

Oh, I did not notice that Prajnesh made a last minute decision to play qualies here. Another bad loss on clay though.

He injured his wrist and is coming back from it. He will be fine once he gets his match fitness back.

I think so too. This seems to be all caused by the wrist issue he has. But then again, wrist problems are sometimes long-lasting in tennis, so we can;t say anything.

Lets see how he fares on the HC's , when he is off to USA for the American challengers where he will be joined by Ram & Mukund and Cary is the first stop after Newport.
Sumit it seems will stay in Europe , but hasn't entered the Challengers during that period , but instead will be playing the 250's starting with Umag where he is in the alt list

Re: Braunschweig Challenger 90, Germany (Clay)
Yes,also I think based on Prajnesh's game style, his game is best suited for hard courts and not on grass and clay where he has had his recent losses. Before that late last year and early this year, he had done decently- reaching 2 challenger finals in US and 2 challenger SF's in Kazakhstan in a competitive field. So, don't think we can write him off saying he is nearing the end of his career. He is probably on the downward curve from the high 2-3 years back when he made the grand slam main draw. But, he can still be competitive for a couple of years at least.

Re: Braunschweig Challenger 90, Germany (Clay)
In addition to Sameer`s point on Clay/Grass, the big issue in general is the lack of tourneys in Asia. Our players used to have these big runs in China, Taipei, Bangkok, India and so on where the field quality would invariably be lower. For example, the Bangalore Challenger which Prajnesh won - probably he didnt face any top 250 player I think . His level was very high during the HC season in Kazakhstan and if he maintained that level, he would have swept most of the Indian challengers if they were held.
The sad part is it looks we wont have any Asian events for 1-2 years more - so looks like it will impact hopes of say a Prajnesh cracking top-100 again or an Ankita cracking top-150

There are a few tournaments happening in Kazakhstan though none of our players have entered there. For next week's tournament cutoff is pretty low ~400.

Re: Braunschweig Challenger 90, Germany (Clay)
From what I read on Indian players were not allowed to enter got earlier set of Kazakh challengers due to covid second wave in India.
Kazakastan and UAE are the the only Asian countries hosting tournaments as of now. Before that India has hosted ITF tournaments before second wave. Hope we see tournaments in India and Asia at least next year if not later this year.

Re: Braunschweig Challenger 90, Germany (Clay)
Sumit starts with a good revenge win.
[R1] (7) Sumit Nagal (IND,150) d. Mohamed Safawat (EGY,170) 63 76(3)
After winning the first set, Sumit started making a few errors and Safawat started playing well and Sumit was down 2-5. But, Sumit raised his game at the right moment to make it 5-5 and then took it to tie break where he led from begining.

Good win by Sumit! He is in a good part of the draw, so hopefully he can go deep here!
The 6 others on his way to the SFs include 2 Q's, 1 LL (the one who took out Prajnesh), 1 WC, and #212 (Moraing), and #261 (Gabashvlii).
