US Open 2020

As of today, the US Open is still on -- and will start four weeks from now, on 31st August. Roger Federer has taken the rest of the year off, but otherwise most of the top players are likely to try and make it. The Mutua Madrid Open has just been cancelled, so more European players are expected to try making it to Flushing Meadows.

For us, the question is going to be: will Sumit Nagal, Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Yuki Bhambri (now healthy with a protected ranking similar to the other two) make the main draw, given that there will probably be no qualifying rounds?
Sadly Ankita Raina will probably not make the main draw if there is no qualifying tournament.

Sania Mirza will surely be playing the Women's doubles and Mixed doubles.

OK, just noticed that Yuki (although he will make the main draw with his protected ranking) has chosen not to play the US Open in order to avoid the Coronavirus.
It does seem utterly insane to try and hold the US Open this year, although the Covid curve has flattened in New York (albeit at a very high level).

Sania might not take risk travelling with her baby. I doubt on her participation.

Nadal and many other European players are not in the entry list.

But, Sumit Nagal makes it in as last direct entrant. Prajnesh is 4 out. Lets see if both of them make the trip there.

Sumit is playing a challenger in Prague in the week after next and will then travel to US. Prajnesh will travel directly to US hoping that he would get in.

As per another news report, Rohan Bopanna will partner Shapovalov at US open and also masters before that.

Safwat is one ahead of Prajnesh on the alternates list. These two have shadowed each other ever since they met in the final of the Challenger in Kunming. A few weeks later, Safwat (ranked one slot above Prajnesh) got into the FO main draw as an LL, PG went off to play a Challenger and lost the next LL slot that opened up. Andy Murray is the first alternate, but will probably get a wildcard if he doesn't get in otherwise.

Interesting decision by Nadal not to travel, on health grounds. I presume he is focused on winning the FO.

I think it was a bad decision by Yuki not to go to the US Open. This was a great opportunity for him to get a win in the main draw, but presumably he realizes that he takes a tournament or two to get into rhythm, so didn't want to go in cold.

Ankita Raina is 36th on the alternatives list for the women's singles. I presume there aren't any qualifying rounds, so she probably cannot make it in. Sad.

Andy Murray made it in with 1 withdrawal. Prajnesh is now 4 out from main draw. He confirmed that he is going to make the trip hoping that would get in eventually.

Yes, Andy Murray was offered a wildcard, but didn't need it as he had made it into the main draw after one withdrawal.

Prajnesh knows he will definitely get in, so he absolutely must travel to New York. It would be good if he can get some competitive tennis before flying there though.

Many players like Yen-Hsun Lu are there with protected rankings, but are unlikely to actually play. Some injured players will back out, others may not make it because of travel restrictions, so it's extremely likely that Prajnesh will make it.

The Doubles draw will only have 32 pairs, so it will be touch and go for Divij. Leander will probably need a wildcard. It is sad that doubles is being treated in this stepmotherly manner again.
