35 year old Su Wei Hseieh reaches her first grand slam qualifier. Another story of it is never too late for anyone. And she is an Asian women with a different playing style. Inspiration for Ankita ??

She reaches a qualifier? You mean quarterfinal?

The quality of the Serena-Simona match was absolutely spectacular. Serena was lethal, but Simona kept raising her game -- and Serena responded superbly after being a break down early in the second set. There were 6 Deuces (most involving spectacular play) before Serena was able to break back in the sixth game.

Serena is amazing. Serena-Naomi promises to be a humdinger. Their head to head is 2-2. Let us see.

The difference in quality between the Serena-Simona match and the matches on the other side of the draw was truly stark. Muchova-Barty was like a club match in comparison with the Williams-Halep blitz-fest. I cannot understand how Barty is so far ahead on the rankings, having conveniently skipped the other two Slams last year. Even after the QF defeat by Muchova (Mucho who?), Ashleigh Barty has a huge ranking lead over the rest of the women. How the hell??

Fabulous returning from Naomi Osaka to beat Serena Williams. Sadly, I think Serena will never win that 24th Slam title, but it won't detract from the simple fact that she is the best woman tennis player of all time. Naomi is the one player who has mastered her, and I think the torch has finally passed from Serena to Naomi, who is simply better than Serena now.

Yep, Naomi seems to be rising to the occasion in the majors. Difficult to see Serena winning another one. Interesting will be at Wimbledon. But, Naomi has power too. So, perhaps no more Williams.

WTA and ITF have decided to bump up points from 25K, 60K and 80K ITF events only for 2021 in view of hardship faced by the players at that level due to Covid-

ITF AND WTA AGREE RANKING POINT INCREASES AT ITF EVENTS IN 2021

That makes those couple of 25K tournaments in Jhajar even more worthwhile for our players.

Ash Barty's 2-year reign as women's singles #1 probably ended with her defeat at Roland Garros today. She skipped both the other Slams last year, after making the SF at the Australian Open. So her 2019 FO title was the main bedrock of her #1 ranking -- coupled with winning the year-end WTA championship in 2019. This year she lost in the QF at the AO, and now in R2 at the French Open.

I like Barty for her feistiness, and the fact that she played pro cricket to develop from a doubles to a singles player. And that her dad is aboriginal, making her the second indigenous-Australian woman to rise to the top of world tennis, is another factor that makes her a very appealing icon. But her reign at the top of women's tennis has been a strange one, prolonged by the pandemic.

Top half of the women's draw has Kenin (4), Svitolina (5) and holder Swiatek (8) still playing in R3.

Bottom half has Serena (8), Sabalenka (3) and Azarenka (15) as the highest seeds. Good chance that Serena will make the final on her least-favoured surface.

Sabalenka too gone, so the way is clearer for Serena in her half of the draw, but Azarenka looms as the one big threat at the QF stage.

Swiatek looks like the likeliest one to reach the final to defend her title. Kenin does pose a major threat to her though. And Sloane Stephens always has the capacity to spring a lot of upsets. Coco Gauff is the emerging star and 5th seed Svitolina is still in contention. Lots of talent and potential bunched up in the non-Serena half of the draw.

When is Grandma Serena going to serenade us with her swan song and retire gracefully? She looks plodding, slow, awkward, grumpy, miserable, unfocused and unhappy. She can’t win on intimidation factor alone. I really enjoyed watching Elena Rybakina play. Tall, athletic, graceful, powerful, courageous... and best of all silent. No shrieking, screaming, screeching, squealing. Just quiet, dignified, respectful, businesslike, professional, focused. She’s the anti-Serena. Rybakina is my new favourite.

Rybakina beat Zeel Desai in QF of Australian open juniors in 2017 in a closely fought 2 sets and see the difference in careers of both now.
