Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Yes, Zverev has withdrawn from this week's Stuttgart event in his home country. Of the top 12 in the world rankings, only one of them is playing this week. I don't think top players play more than 2-3 weeks in a row if they go deep in those weeks.

Re: T20 World Cup, W.Indies/USA 2024

^^^Minor correction - Alexi Lalas was a defender and not a goalie. I think Brad Friedel was the goalie of the US team. The biggest effect from 1994 world cup was the launch of MLS (major league soccer) which has quietly become the soccer league with the most revenue outside of the big 5 leagues in E...

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Good to see Sumit pull through. Gianessi is a 34 year old player who has been inside the top 200 through most of his career but is now on the decline, so somewhat surprised at the struggle. I suspect Sumit was less than 100% on this day, so hopefully he has something left in the tank for the QF pote...

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...

Yes, 100% should be out. And the ball was 100% out. Effectively the ball has to be more than 100% out. That is even if the part contacting the ground is fully over the line, the inner most edge of the ball can still be over the outer edge of the line and that is considered in under soccer rules.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

They may lose anyway as Balaji-Begemann have been playing well recently, so there may be no real need to tank it.

Re: T20 World Cup, W.Indies/USA 2024

Thought I'd share an American desi joke doing the rounds.

Pakistan was beaten by India's A team after losing earlier to India's H1B team. :D

Re: T20 World Cup, W.Indies/USA 2024

Pant has easily been our best player in the WC so far. He has the most runs at one of the best strike rates. If they had a way to calculate something like the fielding WAR in baseball, he may also be our best fielder with his catching and his range as a keeper.

Meanwhile Avinash Sable finished second in his 3000m Steeplechase with 8.21.85s. Seems like this is first competition in his main event this year. He has already qualified for the Olympics in this event last year. https://olympics.com/en/news/portland-track-festival-2024-athletics-avinash-sable-indi...

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Wow, what a nail biting win! He should take next week off. Nahin bhai, no more time off... he is on a roll. No 77 in world. Needs to get to 50! Schedule. https://snipboard.io/9k1cIN.jpg Not sure but I think Sumit has likely also clinched his spot for the US Open. He loses 75 points on 7/22 which I ...

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Agree that key will be how mistake free Van Assche plays. He has the bigger game compared to Sumit but hopefully Sumit can stay in the points long enough on clay that he forces Van Assche to make forced errors.

Re: South East Asian BWF tournaments May-June 2024

If SatChi are fit (i.e., not injured), they would probably be among India's best bets for an Olympic medal.

Among the long shots, Sindhu and Lakshya look like they are in decent form but will need to be at their peak to medal.

Re: Indian Shooting thread

I like the "choke factor" in concept but the data for that is quite sparse and could be very stale. If you are looking at Olympic choke, that would be from 4 years ago, and the current form of the shooter is likely quite different now. I do like SinH's suggestion that the finals in the tri...

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Another tough match for Sumit against Van Assche who is a very talented 20 year old with a big game. While he has lost a fair bit recently, those losses have mostly been at the ATP level and he has been competitive even when losing (for example, taking sets off Ruud and Baez). We know that peak Sumi...

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Yes, this is a solid win. Looks like he is regaining his form on clay. Hopefully, he can go deep here.
