Re: India in England, summer of 2021

Vihari is a reserve specialist batsman, to be picked if one of the frontline batters is injured.

Re: Grass court tournaments 2021

Ankita too is headed in the direction of becoming a doubles specialist. I hope the Wimbledon singles qualifying draw is kind, and she makes the main draw — prolonging her singles hopes.

Re: India in England, summer of 2021

We have a 3-man tail comprising the pacers. Ashwin has shown his resumed batting ability in recent tests. Jadeja is a quality batsman, far superior to Vihari.

Re: India in England, summer of 2021

I think there is no point at all in playing Vihari ahead of Ashwin. That would just weaken the bowling immeasurably without adding anything to the batting. But this may well be the (stupid) decision made. Vihari wasn't used by his county side as a bowler, so why should he be thought capable of bowli...

Re: Grass court tournaments 2021

Isn’t Vasselin Rohan’s ex partner in several tournaments? I suppose they know each other’s game well. Great that the Indian pair had the upper hand. Now, please capitalize on this win. Pretty please? Roger-Vasselin was Bopanna's partner for many months, but Bopanna has also paired up with Kubot at ...

Re: Grass court tournaments 2021

Terrific win for Ramkumar over a very experienced and effective grass-court player. At last Ramkumar has a proper season on grass and he’s living up to his potential. Highly unexpected win for Ankita, partnering a Mexican ranked 137 in singles and 245 in doubles. That they beat the 3rd seeds, who pl...

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup

On clay, Nadal is the GOAT, and his closest competitor is Vilas, not one of the contemporaries. Borg didn’t have longevity, which diminishes his stature, otherwise he too would be in the conversation.

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup

"Federer won 6 of those 8 titles before Djokovic emerged on the scene", you say. What is your point? The fact that Djokovic had not yet "emerged on the scene" somehow diminishes Federer's earlier Wimbledon titles?? In 2009, when I saw them both play on the Wimbledon centre court (day 1, Djoker won a...

Re: India in England, summer of 2021

New Zealand have won a test series against England, while India will be going into the WTC final with no match-practice whatsoever. This is ludicrously unfair -- and stupid (yet again) of the Indian team management not to have arranged a proper practice match. How can NZ be allowed to play test cric...

Re: Sania Mirza Comeback - 2020-21

Sania was supposed to play doubles this week with Bethanie Mattek-Sands at Nottingham, but they aren't in the draw. I presume Bethanie wanted to rest after playing the women's doubles final on Sunday at the French Open. They should be playing together next week at Birmingham, and then at Wimbledon.

Re: [Tennis] Misc. Results for Indians abroad...

Again the same issues of an Indian player not able to capitalise on a good upset. At M15 Monastir 23A, Tunisia [ R2 ] (WC) Siddhant Banthia (IND,1266) l. Eliakim Couliabaly (CIV,965) 36 46 I presume this is R2, after beating Duck-hee Lee in R1. You labelled this R1 as well, which was confusing... P...

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup

Federer is 5 years older than Nadal, and 6 years older than Djokovic. That he is still competitive against them is what is remarkable. His opponents in the early part of his career seem to be of a poorer quality -- but that was partly because Federer made them appear inferior. Roddick and Safin woul...

Re: Grass court tournaments 2021

Leonardo Mayer is the rare Argentine who is a good grass-court player: he made R4 at Wimbledon in 2014, R3 in 2015, and made R2 even the last time Wimbledon was played (2019). Should be a good test for Ramkumar.

Re: Indian Women's Team thread ....

India's women's team is playing a one-off test in England, starting on Wednesday (16 June). In the past 10 years, India have played just 2 women's tests, and won both. In the past 20 years, the record is 10 tests, 4 wins, 1 loss. Ludicrously few tests being played by the women in a format they are r...

Re: General Cricket Thread ...

Ridiculous that a star player should behave so badly in what appears to be a club game. Why the hell does he need to even play this -- and then behave in a ridiculously arrogant manner. It's amazing that Bangladesh has become competitive despite an utterly amateurish domestic set-up. Pakistan was si...
