Re: India in England, summer of 2021

Fitness is probably the only excuse for leaving Bhuvi out of the test squad -- especially on a tour of England (or NZ), where he should always be an automatic selection. Perhaps Bhuvi hasn't demonstrated the ability to bowl long spells in first class cricket (which he hasn't played for about 3 years...

Re: Rohan Bopanna thread...

There's no doubt that the best singles players are good at doubles when they play it -- especially if they have a good volley. Many of the great singles players used to play singles early on -- Connors (with Nastase), J McEnroe (with Peter Fleming), Ken Rosewall (with his singles rival Lew Hoad), Ne...

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup

Thiem is through to the semifinal in Madrid, where he awaits the winner of the blockbuster QF between Nadal and Sasha Zverev. The other half of the draw is much lighter, with Medvedev (2nd seed) losing to Cristian Garin at the last-16 stage. Garin (after losing to Sumit in Buenos Aires) won the tour...

Re: India in England, summer of 2021

The squad for the WTC final and the 5-test tour of England has been announced. Prithwi Shaw is dropped (excluded even from the standby list), with Abhimanyu Easwaran (who averaged about 20 in the last Ranji season and has an underwhelming career FC average of 43) getting picked as a standby instead....

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Before last week's loss (on clay) in Munich, Sumit had a 1-1 record against Gombos. Both losses on clay, the only win on hard courts - the exact opposite of what you'd expect. Anyway, time to set the record straight on clay.

Re: Indian Premier League (IPL)

There is some talk of the IPL shifting entirely to England for the rest of the season. I think this would be a splendid idea (a number of counties are bidding to play host), and help prepare the Indian test side in English conditions well before the World Test Championship final. BCCI should take up...

Re: Indian domestic cricket/ players

I think he was supposed to play just 3 (or at most 4) matches. So an utterly mediocre stint for Vihari, just as I expected. He isn't a shoo-in for the test squad, but should make the expanded squad of 22-25.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

[R2] 8-Sumit Nagal (IND,140) d. Q-Sergiy Stakhovsky (UKR,213) 46 61 64

After the initial hiccup, a nice win over the man who stunned the GOAT (Federer) at Wimbledon in 2013.

[R1] 8-Sumit Nagal (IND,140) d. Q-Zdnek Kolar (CZE,225) 62 64

Nice and easy win over an in-form player! He plays either Stakhovskiy or Popko in R2.

Re: Sumit Nagal thread

[R1] 8-Sumit Nagal (IND,140) vs. Q-Zdnek Kolar (CZE,225) 62 22

Kolar beat Elias Ymer and Bachinger (61 61) to qualify in, so he's in form. Good start from Sumit here to take the first set 6-2. On serve, Sumit is 2-1 up in the second set.
Kolar holds at love. 2-2.

Re: Indian Premier League (IPL)

The IPL has been suspended "indefinitely", and Brijesh Patel says it will certainly not resume in May -- which means that it's unlikely to resume before mid-September (the end of India's tour of England). Varun Chakravarthy and one other KKR player tested positive first, then Wriddhiman Saha (who pl...

Re: French Open 2021, 24 May- 13 June

Sumit Nagal (who has played in the main draw of the last two Slams, making R2 at the US Open) should be expected to qualify in quite comfortably this year at the FO, given his successes on clay. Prajnesh has at least a decent chance of making it in as well. He played all 4 Slams in 2019, and the AO ...

Re: Coronavirus SARS-Cov2 (COVID-19)

Yes, the second consecutive decline in the daily new case load. Certainly good news that we seem to have peaked at that 402K number a couple of days ago, rather than 450K+ as many of us were fearing until 5-6 days ago.

Re: Coronavirus SARS-Cov2 (COVID-19)

So, we had a +392.6K today... 10K less than yesterday... From about 2072K tests at 18.07% ... The good news is that our three-day positivity dipped (though slightly from 18.19 to 18.16) for the first time in almost two months (53 days)... The deaths also have not risen at a drastic rate for 4 days ...
