Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup

Canada's tennis system has been based on nurturing foreign-born talent brilliantly. Started with Rusedski (who defected to Britain to further his prospects, using his Brit mom as the excuse), and then Pospisil, Raonic, Shapovalov, Auger-Aliassime. In an earlier era, the US had Sampras and Agassi (b...

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup

Sorry about my choice of words, JIC and prasen9. I didn't mean to be racist -- just wasn't aware that Auger-Aliassime and Andreescu were Canada-born. The latter had two Romanian parents, and the former's father was from Togo but his mother was Canadian -- so he is "properly" Canada born, just as muc...

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup

That is an incredible kick serve from Opelka. I presume Nadal countered it by taking it from even further back, and the kick would have just been like a lob to him a long way behind the baseline...

Re: French Open 2021, 24 May- 13 June

Sadly, Sania isn't playing the French Open. Visa issues are challenging, especially as she needs to travel with her son -- as well as sister Anam (to look after her son when she is playing) and preferably father Imran, who coaches her (and often the doubles pair as well). But getting all those visas...

Re: French Open 2021, 24 May- 13 June

Vatsal claims that Yuki withdrew from the US Challenger (after one doubles match) because he had Covid. If that is true, then he probably doesn't yet feel strong enough to play again. Hopefully, he will start the grass season early.

Re: Heilbronn Challenger 100, Germany (Clay) - May 10-16

Good to see Divij pull off a couple of wins at the Challenger level (with Sander Arends). Divij's doubles ranking has dropped to 71 (Arends is 93, with a career-high of 55) and it would help if they win the next two matches.

Another solid win that prepares him well for the FO qualifiers. But what's with these 61 16 or vice versa sets?

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup

The one truly Canada born and bred tennis player was Montreal-born Eugenie Bouchard. In 2014, she made the Wimbledon final, and the SF at the AO and FO. She did make R4 at that year's USO too, but making the Wimbledon final (and the celebrity that accompanied it) basically killed off her tennis care...

That was Greg Rusedski I was talking about (not "Rudelski"!).

At Zagreb Challenger 80, Croatia (Clay) [Q2] (6) Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND,215) d. (2) Zhizhen Zhang (CHN,186) 63 76(3) [R1] (Q) Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND,215) l. (Q) Sabestian Baez (ARG,218) 46 06 Excellent win for Ramkumar in Q2, but a tame loss to an Argentine claycourter in R1. Still, great prepa...

Re: India in England, summer of 2021

At one time, India was captained by a Contractor (Nari) with an Engineer (Farooq) keeping wickets!
But Polly Umrigar was probably the greatest of the Parsi cricketers (and Diana Edulji among women). There were also Rusi Mody (not the Tata executive of the same name) and Rusi Surti.
