Prakash Amritraj thread... (at Newport ATP qualies)

Postby gvhvhg » Wed Jun 29, 2005 9:44 pm

I arrived at the grounds today just as the match before PA's was finishing (match point in fact :D )

I saw PA through the door of the locker room and gave him a thumbs up sign. There were two other Indians there today cheering alongside me and I think we did what was necesarry :D .

0-1: PA hit a sublime drop volley but GL went on to hold at 15
1-1: PA was up 40-15 but the game got drawn out into three deuces. Pa eventually went on to hold.
2-1: PA got the break and the best thing about it was his shout of "Chale!" to end the game
3-1: Pa held (I was a little distracted by Bracciali who was sitting next to me 8-) )
3-2: PA started out at 15-30 showing great touch at the net. However GL pulled through for the hold
4-2: PA started at 30-15 but followed it up with a double fault. GL had a BP but PA saved it with a magnificent crosscourrt backhand volley and went on the end the game with an emphatic ace and another "Chale!"
5-2: PA got it to 0-30 but there was some confusion. On the second point his return hit the line and GL could not do anything with it. However the umpire called 15-15. GL showed great sportsmanship by correcting. PA got the insurance break thanks to two GL DF's.
6-2: At deuce GL, who had been showing his anger all day threw his raquet for what was the second or third time. He was given an unsportsmanlike conduct point penalty. His arguement was quite humorus. He kpet throwing his raquet showing the umpire what he though raquet abuse was versus what he had done. PA kept his cool though and finished it off for the win

After the match PA went to cool off with ice and what not, and was kind enough to give me his player lunch coupon. Later I went with him to Boston Market where he picked up some lunch of his own. Then we headed back to the club. I caught a little of Nathan Healey's match as I wanted to see the guy who Harsh had played twice recently. He is a really strong guy and a good player but has some attitude problems. He was crushing his opponent 6-2 2-2 and started bickering over a call. He stopped play for a good five minutes by calling for the tournament referee. I was sitting behind his freinds and I overhead their conversation. Even they were saying that it was unnecesary and that this was his biggest problem.

I saw PA again and the rains soon came. Ill be going out there tomorrow if there is play, after I left PA was headed for a workout at the gym.

Nice report gvhvhg. :D

The reports of all the Indian tennis fans also point to an important fact that not only the rest of us benefit from reading the reports, but the Indian players get pumped up with their on-site support.

Thanks to all those who have gone to cheer the Indian players.

Nice report, Gurvinder. It seems your thumb is doing the trick for PA. In case you can't make it to cheer him up for the rest of the tourney, you should think about donating it to him a la Ekalavya ;)

Thanks for the reports again.

Prakash plays Taino at about 11.30 pm tomorrow. Second match on center court but the first one is a postponed match at 5-5 first set, that starts at 10.

Not to take anything away from PA's previous wins, but just wanted to correct something. Sergio Roitman was ranked in the 140's the week our boy Prakash took him out in Indianapolis.

And Safin was just coming back from injury when he played Prakash, who led 5-3 in the first set before Safin retired. Think it was a wrist problem?

Wow I got to say this si a huge chance for PA. Upsetting Lapentti means he takes over Lapenttis draw...which is techncially supposed to be the easiest since he was the top seed. Big chance for PKash to make some noise here. I hope he can do it!

Good Luck PA!
