Domestic Junior Circ./ Upcoming u15 players

Some pretty good news from last week .. Our 5 under-14 kids were in Australia last week for the Australian National u14s (along with 11 other asian players, selected from the Asian u14 juniors, as sameer posted just above) ... Good job by Adnya Naik in reaching the QF, one of only two among the 16 Asian team kids to do that. In fact 3 of the 4 Asian team kids who reached the final 16 stage were Indians (Adnya Naik, Sudanwa Sitaram and Mansigh Atare)

Boy, I had some trouble searching out these results .. Here they are.

2006 OPTUS 14S HARDCOURTS
Jan 9-15, 2006, Gosford, NSW, Australia

Girls:

64 Adnya Naik d. Allyce Casey 6-1;6-3
32 Adnya Naik d. (9) Abbie Stone 6-3;6-4
16 Adnya Naik d. Julia Tyszkiewicz 6-1;6-3
QF (4) Deeon Mladin d. Adnya Naik 7-5;4-6;6-1

Boys:

128 Sameer Paranjape d. Scott Wagland 6-2;6-2

64 Mansingh Athare d. Hugh Clarke 0-6;6-3;6-0
64 Sudanwa Sitaram d. Sam Jensen 6-1;1-6;6-4
64 Ronak Manuja d. Ben Osborne 6-3;6-3
64 Blake Brookman d. Sameer Paranjape 6-2;6-3

32 Mansingh Athare d. Jarred Wynan 6-1;6-3
32 Sudanwa Sitaram d. (6) Tye Budiono 6-3;6-4
32 (16) Aaron McRae d. Ronak Manuja 6-4;3-6;6-1

16 (1) James Queenan d. Mansingh Athare 7-5;6-1
16 (10) Daniel Davies d. Sudanwa Sitaram 6-3;6-3

Consolation draw

R3 Stuart Robertson d. Ronak Manuja 6-0;6-3
R4 Josh Nelson d. Sudanwa Sitaram 3-6;6-4;10-5
R4 Mansingh Athare d. Tito Farulian Hutauruk 7-6;6-0
QF (8) Darren Soenario d. Mansingh Athare 4-6;6-3;10-7

Nothing too disappointing at all about our boys' results. In fact they held up pretty damn well. All were unseeded and only lost to seeds in the end - and that too in some competitive matches. Sudanwa upset the 6th seed and Adnya upset the 9th seed along the way. Pretty good work.

Grace Sari Ysidora (INA), the girl who finished second behind Adnya also did well there, reachiung the semi (she had an easier QF opponent than Adnya, actually).

Sudanwa and Mansigh were the only ones among the eight asians to reach the final-16 in the boys' draw. Francis Casey Alcantara (INA) who finished just ahead of these two in the Asian 14s as the top one, was seeded 11th in the main draw, and went down in the round of 32. He acquited himself well by winning the consolation title, beating the 9th and 16th seed.

I didn't know where to put this news.

There is an AITA national tennis ranking tournament going on.

In Semifinals

Saurav Sukul (WB) bt J Vishnu Vardhan (AP) 6-0 6-0
Aditya Madkekar (Mah) bt P.C. Vignesh (AP) 6-3, 6-4

In doubles

Aditya Madkekar (Mah) & Arjun Goutham (Kar) bt Saurav Sukul (WB) & Jaco Mathew (AP) 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

Vikram Aditya Menon (TN) & Mithun Murali (TN) bt P.C. Vignesh (AP) & Suresh Krishna (AP) 6-2, 6-2

I wonder who is Jaco Mathew is (AP???) . Is he different from the one we usually discuss in the forum (Kerala).

And whats wrong with Vishnuvardhan? Lost 6-0 6-0

Actually, Jaco Mathew whom we frequently discuss in forum represent TN but I think is a Keralite. This is the first time I am hearing some one from AP. I think it is a typo.

Jaco hails from Kerala alright. He practices at Chennai. I'm sure AP is a typo. Vishnu's scoreline is really baffling. I hope it is not typo or if correct injury ?

I have been complaining a lot about our kids not going to Europe early enough, for a while. So, I got a bit of a pleasant surprise, when some of the names I was worrying/wondering about, showed up in the entry list for a ETA under-16 event .. At the ETA grade-2 u16 at Foligno, Italy (May 22)

Sudanwa Sitaram (15 y 9 mo)
Akash Wagh (15 y 10 mo)
Christopher Marquis (16 y 2 mo)
Ashwarya Shrivastava (14 yr 2 mo)
Kyra Shroff (13 yr 6 mo)

Hopefully they will all go there, and won't withdrawtheir names! .. This is indeed a nice development to see a team of Indian kids in Europe .. Especially looking forward to see how my girl Ashwarya would do there!

Good to see these kids planning to play in Europe which Jay has been emphasising for long time.
I think all these kids are part of Bhupathi tennis acadamy programme training under Italian coach . So, they might have sponsred them for Italian tour.

Ah, I hadn't thought of the Bhupathi academy connection! .. That explains it. I was wondering what suddenly made these kids to go there.

They have entered the week after Foligno at the ETA u16 in Montegani (Apr 29). In the main draw for those evnts but they are all in the qualies for the June 6th ETA u16 event at Avvenire, Italy. There Sweta Solanki joins them as part of the ITF junior team from Asia (she will be in the main draw). That list just came out this week.

We will continue the discussion in the "juniors abroad" thread now (this is the domestic tour thread for u16) ..

I hate it when I itch to write "I have to see it to believe it" and then decide against that - only to find later that my first thought was not off the mark at all.

I was looking forward to see that group of 5 kids showing up for the ETA u16 event in Europe. Kept checking if they would withdraw - and they hadn't .. But I just saw the draws for the Foligno u16. There are 3 lucky losers each in the two draws - and all 5 Indians listed as no-shows. I hate it when I see stuff like that. I don't know what went wrong.

So I will wait to see if they will make it to next week's event that they had entered for. Hope Ashwarya, Christopher and party will be going.

Yes, they are on red clay. Definitely good experience for the kids. Akash's show has been rather unprecedented I would say. He has pulled off some good wins. Going 6-1 so far (and he won all those matches rather handily in straight sets, only falling to the top seed and the runnerup last week), is quite impressive. This week's event is particularly tough, as a lot of kids sponsored by ITF and COSAT (ITF's south american regional outfit) are there. Let us see how Akash does.

Really remarkable performance from Akash Wagh on clay ... Yes these kid will hugely benefited from this early exposure on european clay ... Ashwarya Shrivastava also fought hard in her defeat against top seed.

In the main draw at the grade-1 Avvenire u16 in Milan,

[R1] (Q) Akash Wagh (IND) l. Rok Bonin (SLO), 46 36
[R1] Sweta Solanki (IND) l. (3) Claudia Giovine (ITA) 64 57 06

So no fireworks from Akash. Must be tired too, after a lot of matches in the last few days .. Decent match from Sweta against the third seed.
