$25K+H Samarkand/Bukhara Chall., Aug 2005 (Bopanna, Rastogi)

Yeek, the singles play got done reaaally fast this week for men in challengers.

[R1] (WC) Karan Rastogi (IND,583) l. (4) Andreas Beck (GER,293), 46 06
[R1] Rohan Bopanna (IND,350) l. (7) Giancarlo Petrazzuolo (ITA,367), 67(3) 36

Damn. Clay bites. I would have preferred Karan playing the qualies to get ready for the main draw. He seems to have been all at sea against Beck.

Bad results today at Samarkand :-

[R] Karan Rastogi [IND] l. Andreas Beck ( GER) 4-6, 0-6.

[R1] Rohan Bopanna [IND] l. Giancarlo Petrazzuolo (ITA) 6-7, 3-6.

Surprising scoreline for Karan in 2nd set . Rohan gave a bit of fight.

A quick end for the Indian players. Playing in the qualifying tournament might have been better for Karan, in retrospect. Hind sight is always 20/20.

Clay is clearly not Rohan's surface but its gutsy of them to go and play there. I presume they'll stay in the region to play more Challengers and get ready for the Asian Championship next month (post USO I believe).

They will both be there for the Bukhara challenger next week in UZB, on hard. Rohan in the main draw, and Karan in the qualies.

The Asian Championships are in the second week of US Open. So there is a week of break after the Bukhara challenger.

Better results for Indians in doubles :-

[R1] Rohan Bopanna ( IND.) / E.Smirnov (RUS) d. Vasilis Mazarakis (GRE) / Niko karagiannis ( GRE) 1-6 , 7-6 , 6-3.

[R1] Karan Rastogi ( IND.) / G.Nicau (Por.) (LL) d. Dennis Matsukevich ( AUS ) / Adrian Cruciat ( ROM.) (3 ) 4-6, 7-6 , 6-2.

Good upset by Karan & his partner over 3rd seeds.

Good start by our players in doubles ... Karan and Nicau produced remarkable upset ... importantly both pairs having tough comeback victories.

why are we always so good at doubles??? I'd much rather we lose these damn doubles matches and win some singles....who cares about doubles??? it's fun to play but it really earns you no sporting glory.

Here is my take on it -- I believe in doubles there is some emotional support from the partner which helps Indians
overcome an inherent diffidence or should I call it lack of confidence(it's tood strong but I will leave it at that).
This really helps at the initial stages of one's career. So the good results in doubles indicate that our players
are actually capable of doing better in singles.

Possibly something to do with the emotional-support thing that Suresh mentions. But I think Indians also have quick hands -- possibly coming from early exposure to sports like badminton and much more focus on volleying skills than elsewhere in the world. Of course Karan isn't known so much for his volleying, but still does well in doubles...

A bigger reason is actually that a few good singles players, even in the futures levels do not play doubles. Indians almost invariably play doubles, and thus find the talent level in the doubles draw a bit easier.

Many foreigners also play doubles a bit half-hertedly - apart from their general higher focus on singles, probably also because the few extra dollars from it is not that big for them compared to the Indians.

Other than a bit more of "hands" coaching etc, I don't think Indians are all that much more talented in doubles or anything. We have a produced a couple of freaks in it though - possibly also because they focused a lot on it thanks to certain deficiencies preventing them from huge success in singles. Just my feeling.

[QF] Rohan Bopanna/ Evgueni Smirnov (RUS) l. (1) Aisam Quereshi (PAK)/ Lovro Zovko (CRO), 57 67(2)

[QF] (LL) Karan Rastogi/ Goncalo Nicau (POR) l. Murad Inoyatov (UZB)/ Dennis Istomin (UZB), 26 46

So, they are off to Bukhara. At least they picked up 12 points each for doubles this week.

Ohh Rohan and his partner had good match against top seed Quereshi and Zovko.

Dennis with his partner Murad take care of Karan and his parter quite easily.
