Only 3 singles matches were held today at the US$ 10000 ITF Women’s Tennis Tournament at Practennis, Andheri.

Quick Results - Singles:

15-Ivanna Israilova (UZB) defeated 12-Sanaa Bhambri (IND)
6-2, 6-1

6-1, 6-1

Andrea Lipovska (AUS) defeated Sagarika Phadke (IND)
7-5 4-6 6-4

These matches were done before I reached the venue :damn:

Doubles:

Shruti Dhawan & Wilawan Choptang defeated Tangphong & Vitayaviroj
6-3, 6-4.
(Some real quality tennis played by both these teams. More later.)

Chin-Wei-Chan & Julia Vorobieva defeated Punam Reddy & Tara Iyer
6-1,6-2

Sagarika Phadke & Nudnida Luangnam defeated Asha Nandakumar & Amoolya Raghunath
6-0, 6-2.

Thanks Neha for score updates .. Will wait for ur report.

But very poor result from Sanaa ... Loss doesn't matter, but score line definetly ... :(

As usually Rushmi continue her dominance over Indian players ... Sagarika fought hard in her defeat.

Lipovska was probably a lucky-loser, as she had lost pretty badly in Q3. Sad that Sagarika (probably a wild-card) couldn't capitalise on the opportunity despite that hard fight.
I'm sure Sanaa will bounce back; that was a match between two very promising youngsters and Sanaa shouldn't be too disheartened by the result.
Thanks, Neha, for your early eye-witness accounts....

Thanks for correcting Dkern.

Yurika Sema (Jpn) defeated Mari Inque (Jpn) 6-2, 6-1

This was the third match along with Sanaa's and Rushmi's, held today.

Apologies

Neha, that's the same scoreline as the one you have for Sanaa's match. Any idea what went wrong for Sanaa against (the undoubtedly talented) Israilova.

Mumbai, 4th April, 2005: Third seed Rushmi Chakravarthi of India and No. 7 Yurika Sema of Japan scored convincing wins to breeze into the second round, as the main draw in the US$10,000 ITF Women’s Tennis Tournament, sponsored by Rajesh Kumar Wadhawan Charitable Trust, got under way at the Practennis School of Tennis, Mumbai here on Monday.

Chakravarthi, the highest ranked Indian in the draw, came through an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over compatriot and qualifier Sonal Phadke, while Sema also crushed compatriot and qualifier Mari Inque 6-2, 6-1 in another first round tie. Ivanna Israilova of Uzbekistan overcame Sanaa Bhambri of India 6-2, 6-1 in a contest between seeded players.

Doubles top seed Chin-Wei Chan and Julia Vorobieva ended Indian pair Tara Iyer and Punam Reddy’s challenge early following a fluent 6-1, 6-2 win in the first round. Asha Nandakumar and Amoolya Raghunath became the second Indian pair to crash out after losing to Nudnida Luangnam and Sagarika Phadke 0-6, 2-6 in a battle between wild cards.

Two doubles matches were in progress when I reached the venue.

Shruti Dhawan and her partner played a top quality match. Both played consistently from the center of the court. Some classy half volleys and drop shots. The second set was underway and they broke their opponents in the 7th game to lead 4-3. No breaks of serve then, but each of the 3 games went on to deuce. All in all some scintillating doubles tennis from both the teams.

Sagarika & Nudnida were having a cakewalk on another court in the mean time. Both were very energetic on court, Sagarika is particularly good at the net. Of what I saw (7 games of set 2), she dint miss even a single point at the net. Very impressive.

PKB, of what I heard about Sanaa’s match (I reached late after making some excuses from work!) was that she just couldn’t find her rhythm. Some DF’s and lots of UFE’s. She couldn’t lift her game, probably one of those bad days…

Thanks Neha.

I hope that Sanaa had an off day, and that she will bounce back soon.

I dint really get to interact with many players but what was most disappointing was that each of the Indian players (except Dhawan and Phadke Jr.) had some sign of injury/ sprain. Either the ankle, the knee/ knees or wrist/ elbow were strapped/ bandaged !!! :(
(Unless it was something like a preventive action..)

Thanks for the report.

If I'm not wrong, Dhawan and Choptang beated Bhambri sisters 6-2,7-5 in the final of $10K Kolkata last year December. I think they are good pair and they beated Tangphong/Vitayaviroj who is seeded yesterday.

Looking forward for your next report.

Superb reporting Neha ... Oops hopfully all r not carrying niggling injury or Indians more prone to injury than other players.

Hoping u get some chance of interacting with players and give us some inside story (offcourse if u get time from ur hectic work schedule) ... Neha, again thanks for reporting.
