Just finished watching a tough match for Shikha, who was clearly not in the best of health. She later said she probably should have just skipped it today. An extremely cold day here in Orange (very unusual for march, but it was about 8 or 9 degree C at Orange today and I was simply shivering!) - that did not help at all as she just came from the asthma problems yesterday at Indian wells at about 28 degree C! .. By the end of the first set today she had to call the trainer to come and give a heavy bandage for the thigh as well .. She was gasping for breath after 5 shot rallies and said she could only try to finish the points off fast .. That did not work against a player who played out of her mind, hitting aces at will and moved very well against some of the nice variations Shikha tried (Tamaela is quite big server, which surprised me) ..
Anyway, the bottom line is a loss 46 26 today to #183 Tamaela. Shikha was broken in the first game itself. She saved 4 set points on her own serve at 3-5 to prolong it but Tamaela served off the first set at 6-4 .. In the second, Shikha was down two breaks at 1-4, and saved a couple of match points to again extend it a bit at 1-5, but Tamaela closed it out in the final game after a couple of deuces.
Shikha's movements were quite impaired. The occasional serve went in with serious zip, and there were probably about a couple of 10+ shot rallies where you could see her spunky ground shots, but by and large she was not at all in shape to do much today to rally like we know she can.
Oh well. She needs another week of rest and will hopefully be all fine by the Miami qualies starting on the 21st.
I will try to take Shikha and Neha out to Benihana for some Japanese food and try to cheer them up. Both are down after unable to do much today.
