A Loooooooooooong Report

Postby Kumar » Wed Mar 23, 2005 11:21 am

‘There is always Tomorrow’ And that Quote was never truer than today when Indians dazzled the Chennai Tennis fans at Gymkhana Tennis courts after a so-so day yesterday…

With the blockbuster match of HM and Vinod Sridhar always lurking in one corner of my mind, I completed my morning activities / light lunch and quickly started for the Gymkhana club promising my mother that I will taste her delicious onion sambar for lunch… Unfortunately I am not familiar with the modern Technology like phones and didn’t call the Club before leaving… So when I reached the club at 10:10 am, I saw HM sitting with a forlorn expression at one corner of the court and Vinod diagonally across him on the other side… Found out that the baseline was severely damaged on Courts 1 and Courts 2 (where KR was slated to play), and they were repairing the damage… This went on for 45 minutes, when the courts were declared ready for play…. And in Walked Hindu Correspondent Mr.Keerthivasan (who was smart enough to call knowing the workings of Indian sports scene) … Okay enough of the rambling (I know you guys are getting bored), so I will get onto the exciting matches…

This was one day HM in spite of winning will be pushed to sidelines when it comes to hogging the limelight… So I will start with Star of the day ---- Karan…

Karan’s Match (with game scores of Karan always in front)..

Game 1- KR Serving won pretty easily holding serve 1-0
Game 2 – SG also holding serve pretty comfortably 1-1
Game 3 – KR with a help of FH down the line winner and another great drop at net to hold serve. 2-1
Game 4 – SG with another easy hold of serve 2-2
Game 5 – Broken… KR failing to hold serve for the first time.. 2-3
Game 6 – SG holds serve easily 2-4
Game 7 – Double fault, but a great inside outside FH winner, KR hold serve 3-4
Game 8 and 9, both SG and KR holding serve – Score 4-5
Game 10 – SG serving for the set… With a BH down the line winner, KR took a 15-30 lead.. Then a rally which went for a while with both KR and SG match strokes, until SG hits a lob to even it at 30-30… And then with a deep serve, SG takes the first set 6-4…

Set 2..
At this time KR was really fighting it out and one could sense that KR was giving a great effort… And I would not have been that sad even if he lost… SG looked to be in tremendous control and after losing the first set, I was thinking that trend of Indians losing to non-indians is going to continue…

Game 1 – After starting with unforced another, KR hit a CC FH winner to even the game at 15 apiece… His second serve in this game was weak and SG was feasting on it… The very first game went to deuce and if KR doesn’t hold serve here, one could sense that match could end very quickly…At deuce SG hits a deep return and KR’s weak shot balloons and falls a few feet away from the net with SG ready to pounce on the ball and hit the winner… After bouncing a gust of wind changed the direction of the ball making SG hit an unbalanced shot (top spin FH), which went way out … AD – KR … This was the point, when the pendulum swung a little towards KR way… Then KR quickly won the next point to take the first game – 1-0.

Game 2,3, 4, 5 – SG, Karan holds serve easily 3-2… At this point SG was really serving well, getting his first serves in..
Game 6 – Karan attacked for only time SG’s second serve and rushed to net… But approach shot was not that good and SG easily passed him… Karan tried a drop shot which again sat up for SG to close the point.. SG holds serve to make it 3-3.
Game 7 – Easy hold of serve 4-3.
Game 8 – BP for Karan… (As I was following the HM-VS tiebreaker which was on court 1, don’t remember the exact details as to how he got to BP)… But SG saves a break point.. Then Karan came with two Cross court winners one on his BH and another on FH to get a much needed break to go up 5-3
Game 9 – With the aid of FH down the line took a 40-0 lead and with an awesome drop volley, takes the second set.. 6-3

At this point, one could feel that pendulum and momentum had swung Karan’s way… At this point SG took a BB ( a little show of gamesmanship ???), who was running scared and need to relieve himself (I guess)… I was really mad (though
KR looked pretty calm) and was shouting to referee that this should not be allowed (though my voice didn’t carry much farther than Keerthi who was sitting besides me)…By this time HM- VS match was over and all the spectators was following this match …

Set 3…
Game 1 - SG Serving … With two aces and a drop shot (a change of pace), quickly holds serve - 0-1. That BB really seem to be working..
Game 2 – Very important game for KR to hold serve after the break…Drop volley at net 15-0.. Another drop shot (this one from baseline) takes a quick 30-0 lead.. His net play was awesome through the match with KR making very few mistakes at the net… At this time, SG started to pounce on his weak second serve and after couple of mistakes, KR was staring at a BP… When KR came up with a passing shot down the line to save off one…
This game went to couple of deuces before KR with the aid of another BH-DL(down the line) winner and a deep first serve was able to hold serve…
Game 3 - SG with another great service game 1-2
Game 4 – KR with consistent service holds serve (SG gets a little irritated at this point).. 2-2… At this time I am loudly cheering from beyond the court 1 along with KR’s coach… One problem I faced was Referee shouts the score in court 2 which is barely heard at the gallery and when KR hit a great shot I went bonkers shouting ‘Great shot KR’.. At this point Ajay Ramaswamy turned and told me politely that It was out  .. I politely request the referees to start using hand signs along with the calls to prevent future disappointment…
Game 5 – Easy hold of serve for SG 2-3
Game 6 – A rare DF from KR and he gets broken after lapse of concentration 2-4 Simon… Game7 – SG holds serve 2-5… Oh did I forget to mention that he came back from 2-5 down… Oh So silly of me, but just wanted to see if you guys are dozing or reading all the gibberish  ? J
Game 8 – KR slows the bleeding with hold of serve 35..
Game 9 – SG serving for the match… KR tries to pass the rushing SG, who goes for FH CC drop volley which just goes out - After my earlier (mis)adventure, I presumed this was out – 0-15. A DF from SG and the score is quickly 15-40.. Then SG made a costly error when he mistimed his forehand and the ball grazed his racquet to let KR back into the match at 45… Karan now showing tremendous fighting spirit…
Game 10 – With a aid of cross court winner quickly takes a 30-0 lead.. But couple of errors later, it is all deuce.. But KR avoids further suspense by quickly winning the next two points and score is 5-5.
Game 11 – SG after a lapse in previous service game, hits three aces to hold serve(love game) – 5-6
Game 12 – Advantage SG as KR was serving to stay in the match and KR started disastrously with a DF and error to go down love-30… But KR fights back quickly to take the game to 30-30… And then hold serve with a BH CC Slice to pass the rushing SG.. 6-6 Tie breaker..

Tie breaker (KR score first)..
SG Serving first 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 Good smash and drop shot, 3-1 KR dumps to net, SG not to be left behind dumps to net 4-1, Another FH error from SG 5-1, And Dumps to net 6-1,.. And KR takes the Tie break 7-3 when SG hits it long.. And finally KR solves Gruel (after two unsuccessful attempts)

This was a great match to follow with KR showing tremendous fighting spirit... He was very consistent with his ground strokes (on both the sides) and rarely made mistakes… And his volleying when he came to net was also very good.. Second set onwards he really started hitting to both sides of SG making him move a lot.. Also showed tremendous court coverage, which he later acknowledged as one of his strengths.. He has some noticeable areas where he has to improve (Serve, deeper ground strokes), but don’t want to spoil the victory mood with all those comments… All other Indian players who were sitting in the gallery were probably looking askance at my ‘demonstrative’ cheering!!! Looking forward to the next match with Denis Istomin, whom he has played in under 14 …And myself and Hindu Correspondent Keerthi met up with KR later to talk with him.. That report along with Bofors/HM will be posted later, as I don’t want to send guys in US back to bed with just one message (Did I break the record for the long report ???)…

Updated: Just added some comments in italics regd the match, which i forgot last time...

Ramu thanks.. Aqeel Khan advanced when OP Der Heijde Melvyn had to become Out Patient (just kidding).. OPDHM retired with side strain while leading 2-1

Also correct my erroneous stmt in the earliest post that Bofors will meet winner of Delgado - smit.. he meets Capkovic..

And as i wanted to give the match reports for all the members in india and was little tired, skipped the doubles match.. Will try to get the results!!!

Fantastic report, Kumar. You should become a tennis novelist, with your keen sense of suspense and narration!

So Karan has good groundstrokes and a very effective volley. I like what I hear!! He only basically needs to work on his serve (which some bulking-up and specific physical training can help solve), and especially the second serve (which every Indian player, starting from Vijay Amritraj at least, has suffered from). All you Indian coaches, please figure out the second-serve conundrum!!

Kumar
Thanks for your mouth watering report. Please don't mention mouth watering recipes of you mom - I get distracted !!! Waiting for your doubles scores.
If I am not mistaken, Karan has a score to settle with Denis too - probably he lost to him in Mumbai futures.
PKBasu
Some of the Indian players have decent 2nd serve - Bofors, Harsh, Vishal to name a few.

Bofor's match report

Postby Kumar » Wed Mar 23, 2005 12:12 pm

Bofors Explode as Fitz Fizzles…

Any other day Bofors performance would have been the top story… But today KR’s fighting win just pushed Bofors performance into a background (though not by much).. This match started when KR and SG were battling it out in third set and was not followed closely by me… So my apologies to Bofors…

Bofors service was at his dominating best and he broke Fitz in Game 2 and Game 4 to take 5-0 lead, before Fitz managed to hold Serve… Bofors quickly closed out the set winning 6-1…

Whatz up Guys!!! Another BB!!! This time By Fitz… He was clearly rattled by an Aggressive bofors who was just toying with him…

Second set—As in the KR’s match, BB seems to stabilize Fitz game a little as both Fitz and Bofors held serve till 3-3… Then Bofors broke Fitz to take a 4-3 lead.. Fitz then showed some spirit by breaking Bofors back in 8th game after 2-3 deuces to even the set… Bofors demolish Fitz dream of a comeback by breaking him again in 9th game to take 5-4 lead and then quickly serve out his game to win the second set 64 and the match 6-1, 6-4..

With KR’s match and lunch offered at Gymkhana club (had to further postpone the Onion sambar delicacy prepared by my mother), I could not follow this match as keenly as I would loved to… But Bofors seemed to be firing on all Cylinders with his serve, though his ground strokes showed the lack of match practice… And Fitz Clearly was out of his elements and looked a pale Shadow of player who is seeded as high as no.4…

Harsh's Match report

Postby Kumar » Wed Mar 23, 2005 12:14 pm

HM - Vinod Sridhar

Vinod showed little effect of his shoulder injury..

First Game – Vinod holds serve with a Good smash ... In this game, both the players ventured to net once, but were easily passed… Vinod 1-0
Second Game – Easy hold of serve for HM 1-1
Third Game – Two DFs and score was 2-1..
Fourth Game – HM was rushing to net quite a few times and inspite of dumping the ball to net twice manages to hold for 3-1 lead…
Fifth game – Sridhar holds serve, HM still leading 3-2
Sixth game – Lot of unforced errors from Sridhar, HM comfortably holds 4-2
Seventh Game – Sridhar holds serve, HM lead 4-3
Eight game – Sridhar has a BP and then HM serves an ‘ace’ to save the BP but unfortunately ‘replay’ is called as the ball from court two trickles into court… This clearly disturbed HM as he lost concentration and the point to lose serve.. 4-4
Ninth Game – With Great BH CC passing shot , HM has another break point.. Which he quickly converts with a shot of the match.. Vinod has a somewhat difficult overhead with Harsh standing by the Service line.. Unfortunately for Vinod, his sharp overhead goes straight to HM, whose quick reflex volley falls safely inside the service line for a break and 5-4 lead…
Tenth Game – HM doing a lot of serve and volley in this game to disrupt Vinod’s game and quickly wrapped up the set 6-4 when Vinod’s FH return was long..

Harsh played a Good set and looked really dominating.. He played a lot of serve and volley and looked sharp volleying… He had some unforced errors, which was the reason Vinod was able to stay alive in this set for a while.. Vinod on the other hand looked out of elements and definitely did not have his ‘A’ game.. He had trouble navigating the ball hit deeply to his back hand (with his double fisted backhand resembling a good cricket shot, and clearly lacking the range/depth)…

Second set
First Game – VS digs himself into a 15-40 hole.. But comes back strongly to hold 1-0
Second – HM holds serve (At this point my concentration had entirely switched to KR’s match.. Sorry Harsh and no particulars will be available from this point on).. 1-1
3rd game – HM breaks serve to take 2-1 lead
4th games – Vinod fights right back when HM makes few unforced errors (dumps to net) 2-2…
5th game – VS holds serve to take 3-2 lead
6th game – Starts the game with serve and volley winner .. But quickly finds himself down 30-40.. And then HM comes up with a BH CC to stave off a BP.. Then a great drop shot and easy volley winner to hold serve 3-3…
Vinod was now really finding good range with his forehand and rallies were played well and we went to Tie Breaker..

Tie Breaker
VS starts with DF and never had a chance as HM takes the tiebreaker 7-2…

VS definitely did not have his ‘A’ game but fought till the end.. HM looked very comfortable… Talked to HM after the match and he said he was very happy with the way he played and felt he had a good chance of advancing to SF if he plays that way.. He will be facing the lucky loser Wang in QF tomorrow.

Harsh also confirmed that he will be playing in UZBEK after Indian futures and then on to DC in Jaipur…

Kumar ... What a reports ... I m calling u Best Tennis Reporter ... :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: ... If I m owner of some newspaper group, then I would give u mouthwatering offer for Sports Journalist ... :xmas:

I m speechless by performance by Karan, Rohan and Harsh ... And defiently KARAN is the star of the day ... Beating Gruel in his adopted home ground ... Simply unbelivable .. What a fight back from 2-5 down ... Rohan's dominance over Top 300 player is heartening ... He is already start showing that he is making fast to fill the gap of lost time becoz of injury ... Nice to see Harsh had tough match with Vinod ... That would definetly help in the future matches ... What a day for Indians 3 players in QF ... I m still not finding proper words after reading such superb report from Kumar.

All three of them seem to be in great form.
But Rohan Bopanna's scoreline is certainly the most impressive. The fast court (and balls) there are clearly helping him, and he should be in his element in Bangalore too. Superb comeback for Bofors!!
(I've already commented in an earlier post on KR's stupendous win)

Harsh's continuing use of serve and volley as a surprise tactic (which began with great success towards the end of the UK Satellite circuit) is the other heartening feature.

Wonderful day in Chennai overall!! And brought vividly to life by our intrepid (and vociferous) reporter Kumar! (Keep up the loud cheering from the stands too, Kumar; it's probably playing a big part in motivating our guys!!).

100% Success for Indians

Postby Kumar » Wed Mar 23, 2005 1:26 pm

For a change, Indians on better end of Whitewash

Being a born spectic, I am all troubled by the Great news that keeps to be coming from the Gymkhana club.. Hopefully I don't wake up (like Ground Hog Day and find that Wednesday has just begun)...

Just called up and got the doubles scores, With all three doubles pair making it to QF (for 100% success rate for indians today)

Karan is having a dream run today, beating the top seeded pair of HM/SKS in three sets.. Looks like this pair has tremendous understanding.. Unfortunately yet to watch them play (may be tomorrow)

Bofors/Kannan just dismantled the 4th seed and Ajay/Vishal also having an easy time..

Guys please pinch me.. I am still unable to believe the results out of Gymkhana club.. I don't remember the last time All the indians won (except when playing against one another)... And I am sure Jay will be able to answer this one..

W K.Rastogi/ Ash.Singh d. 1 H.Mankad / S.K.Sipaeya 76(2), 36, 63
W I.Cerovic/ K.Gruber d. A.Khan/ N.Monroe 76, 64
W R.Bopanna/ V.Kannan d 4 S.Greul/ P.Mayer-Tischer 64, 62
W 2 A.Ramaswami/ V.Uppal d. K.Capkovic/ J.Hasek 75 , 64

The maximum number of Indians who could have made the QF in singles and SF in doubles at the beginning of the day has in fact done so. Terrific stuff! Let's ensure that Indians win both the singles and doubles!! Better still, let's have two all-Indian finals!

Do I get a candy for saying this yesterday? -
I think Karan will beat Greul tomorrow
