Great effort by Gurmehar Signh to qualify in...knocking of Jaco in the final round...of course once again a great run by Karan...one convincing win and two hard fought ones

Dissapointing to see Ashutosh Singh lose in the final round of qualies---i think ive seen that happen to him a couple of times actually

Where is my man Punna Vishal??

These are very tough qualifiers, and it's good to see Karan come through them twice in a row. I think the experience itself is worthwhile, but he still needs to win a round in the main draw to get any points! Sad to see Vishal lose tamely, albeit against a tough seeded opponent.
Sunil Kumar has a very tough opponent in Sergei Bubka (son of the great pole vaulter, and one of the world's best juniors).

Great wins by Karan ... He is coming back to his form ... Its nice to see that he survive 2 three seters to qualify for main draw ... This is very tough futures ... Hope atleast Karan gets atleast one ATP point with win on Russian after hard fought qualifiers.

Gurmehar Singh produced surprise beating Jaco to qualify for main draw ... Sunil is very tough opponent ... Sergei is imprving leaps and bound.

Terrible day, as only one of four Indians won today, according to jiro's site ..

KWON Oh-Hee KOR d. (Q) SINGH Gurmehar IND 6-1,6-1
(6) SRIDHAR Vinod IND d. (Q) KURZ Michael SUI 7-6(1), Ret
LEDOVSKIKH Mikhail RUS d. (Q) RASTOGI Karan IND 6-4,6-2
(Q) BUBKA Sergei UKR d. 2 SIPAEYA Sunil-Kumar IND 7-5,3-6,5-3 Ret.

MATHEW Jaco/SI Yew-Ming(IND/MAS) d. SINGH Ashutosh/SINGH Gurmehar(IND) 6-3,6-3

What is Sunil Kumar doing, retiring at 5-3 in the third? Doesn't he know that it is just NOT accepted etiquette to do it that late in a match (unless one is so badly hurt not to be able to stand there and give the other guy the win -- hopefully he is not hurt that badly)... That is terrible, both that he lost, and that he retired that late. Hope he will b e fine for the India satellites starting next week.

Ah, what a depressing week so far, with LP, Shikha, Neha, HM, SKS, Vijay, etc, all losing early ...

...and for all his good wins of late, still no points for Karan. Oh well, they'll come with time (and by entering a satellite tourney somewhere!)

Sunil and inconsistency in performance travel togather ... Where he perform well and where not, its easy to predict like indian cricket team performance ... :( Sergie was tough opponent, but why Sunil retired so late in the match???

Karan's tough luck is continue ... But all these match practice will help him in future ... Vinod still in futures, hopefully bring up some good news on another bad week of Indian tennis.

One more bad singles result from Thailand:
Q-DE KLEIJN Ruben NED d. 7- KANNAN Vijay IND 6-3,7-5

So, of the six Indians in the main draw, five lost in the first round. Awful!

Sunil Kumar did win his doubles match:
4-AL GHAREEB Mohammed/SIPAEYA Sunil-Kumar(KUW/IND) d. MIYAO Joji/OGAWA Atsuo(JPN) 7-6(8),6-3

jaydeep -- I don't know if this loss from Sunil was due to inconsistency though .. He has played quite a bit lately and may be carrying some injuries .. I have been concerned from the Nigeria events when I saw his name in back to back to back weeks for three in Nigeria, two in Thailand, 4 in India, etc. He has got to be already tired from all the travel and play. Fatigue injuries add up and does affect one's play.

My only complaint is that he should not have retired with one game to go in a match (that should be done only if you cannot lift the arm and serve on your own serve or you cannot stand on the court to allow the other guy to serve four times - hopefully he is not that injured, and as he seems to have played doubles later, that was not the case). I actually wanted Sunil to get out of Thailand and get to India early to get rested up for the satellites - which is going to be a tough grind.

Actually all the Indian players are better off getting back to India fast.

Jay

PS: Perhaps nobody has ever told young Sunil about this little etiquette matter about retiring with one game to go. Perhaps only some purists like me care so deeply about something like that. I don't want to be too harsh on the young man. I suppose I just feel deeply about Indian players doing these things right and being aware of that.

Second Round
1- ECONOMIDIS Konstantinos GRE vs AL GHAREEB Mohammed KUW
8- SLANAR Martin AUT d. KWON Oh-Hee KOR 6-0,6-3
LEGAT Guillaune FRA d. LIU Tai-Wei TPE 6-1,6-4
OGAWA Atsuo JPN vs Q-DE KLEIJN Ruben NED

LEDOVSKIKH Mikhail RUS d. 6- SRIDHAR Vinod IND 7-6(2),5-7,7-6(5)
Q- ZUBCEVIC Amar SUI vs 3- WITSCHNIG Herbert AUT
5- GREMELMAYR Denis GER d. WC-DOKMAIKLEE Weerapat THA 6-2,7-5
KISS Sebo HUN vs Q-BUBKA Sergei UKR

I would say " Sorry " to India players. They are all talented but they lost in very closed so many match, like tie break in third set. They should go to QF or SF if they won the third set.
