7 Rushmi Chakravarthi(IND) d.   Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE)           62 62

2 Chia-Jung Chuang (TPE)   d. Q Iciri Rai (IND)              60 64

Preety damn good work by Karishma Patel who turned 17 only a couple of months back... Remember that Punam is ranked #120 and I-Hsuan, whom she beat in the qualies is ranked #61 in the juniors! .. That qualies win goes as a big one. Then she pushed Ankita all the way to a 7-5 third set too. Punam has really shown some good improvement lately.

And, great win by Sanaa. Good to see her play well after a long time. She got seriously injured at this time last year in the US and has taken a long time to get back ..

By the way, Rushmi's win over #374 Su-Wei Hsieh is impressive too .. #374 Su-Wei was a top-10 junior a couple of years back and had also reached WTA #130 in jul 2002 (she is still only 18, and is on a comeback trail after injury which saw her reach the final of the Seoul $25K three months back - she had beaten Sunitha 62 64 in the SF there) ...

Is it weird or what, how Rushmi can seemingly beat anybody in India and can seemingly beat nobody in the top-400 abroad?

Just got mail from New Delhi.

It's still raining today, no matches play. The ITF said they want to finish all first round match at least. The tournament will be cancelled if they have to wait until Friday. For sure they will cancel the double match !!!!!

Hope that tomorrow the wether will be clear.

No rain here today.. I think they got a load of matches in... these are the results I caught off PTI:

Sanaa needed exactly an hour to shock the third seed, Emily Webley-Smith of Great Britain, 6-2 6-4 in the second round here today.

The Briton was probably at a disadvantage as she had to play the match within hours of her 6-4 6-1 first round victory over Chinese Taipei qualifier Yi Chen.

The 16-year old Delhi girl will face a tough task when she takes on Sania tomorrow in the last-eight tie.

Clear weather is forecast for the rest of the week(end).

Semifinal Scores:

Sania MIRZA (IND, 346) defeated Napaporn TONGSALEE (THA) 26 63 64
Chia-Jung CHUANG (TPE, 251) defeated Akgul AMANMURADOVA (UZB) 63 76(2)

Congrats to Sania for her big coming out party in New Delhi! She has picked up 20 big points so far, and can get another 9 if she wins the final tomorrow. So far, her ranking has moved up from 346 to around 301 in the world...

(Not to mention the fact that she hasn't lost a match outside of Fed Cup since a 3 set loss to Emilie Loit in APRIL.)

Win it tomorrow!

Magnificent work continues from Sania. She has been unbeaten on the Futures circuit for months, and it would be fantastic if she can sustain that unbeaten streak at the higher, Challenger level too. She is certainly looking unstoppable.
This tournament is becoming a coming-out-party not only for Sania but also for Indian women's tennis generally. It was good to see Rushmi give a terrific fight in the QF (although she was only living up to her seeding, and we are painfully aware that her performances fall off drastically when she is outside India). But also fabulous of both Bhambri sisters to make the QF (especially Sanaa, whose form had been languishing for several months). And what a terrific fight by Ankita against Amanmuradova in the QF. This has been a very satisfying Challenger: when have there been 4 Indians in a Challenger QF? And to think that several of the top Indian women were missing!! (Isha and Megha, for instance...).
