$25K Pakistan-1 Satellites (Aug 9 - Sep 5)

Thanks, Red_Indian. Huge upset of Vijay Kannan. I wonder if the injury he was carrying during the Indian Satellites has healed...he has been woeful in the first two rounds of the Pakistan satellites. Terrific stuff from Jeevan.
Things appear to be proceeding at a glacial pace in Lahore. Everyone focusing on the Olympics on TV?

India's sporting cup of woe extended to the Satellite tennis event in Lahore too yesterday. The young Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan seems to be the only Indian survivor in the QF there (albeit at the expense of compatriot Ashutosh Singh). Here's the report from the local Daily Times:

The tale of India's abdication of her sterling legacy of grass court tennis is a bathetic tragedy. ("bathetic", as from bathos: from the sublime to the ridiculous).

Aqeel Khan is running away with all the points in the Pakistan Satellite, which is marking the arrival of Pakistan as a serious tennis-playing nation. Lots of players gaining points there, while the Indian contingent languish. Let's hope the latter can turn things around in the final two legs, although none of them are likely to be seeded in singles.

Aqeel lost to Japan's Sakai in the Lahore leg final, but is also in the doubles final -- alongwith partner Vijay Kannan -- which was played on Monday morning:

Aqeel Khan and Vijay Kannan lost the doubles final 4-6 6-7 (6-8), given Sakai a double crown.
But the more interesting news was Aisam ul Haq Qureshi getting a national award from the President of Pakistan:

Here are the results from the Satellite leg 3, first round, as reported by a local daily:
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.as ... 004_pg2_23

Good to see Vijay Kannan win easily and Ashutosh Singh beat an Australian. Now to advance beyond the next two rounds...Come on Vishal Punna, Vijay Kannan, Vivek Shokeen, Ashutosh, Gurmehar -- let's see you win at least another round each, and one of you go all the way!!
