31.01.2010 : MINDSPK, Mumbai :
Triumph sports in association with Steadfast sports & adventure academy were on the lookout for the next David Beckham. A record of 1100 points which still stands in the name of this iconic Englishman (and recognized by FIFA) during his formative days at the Bobby Charlton soccer academy was the benchmark for every participant to emulate. The competition was fast and furious. The call for the day was a combination of concentration, speed, power and finesse. And one boy stood head and shoulders above the rest, Wing Choy Chen of City International school, Andheri. Of the four skill contest he won three disciplines, namely shooting, dribbling and juggling handsomely. The passing skill which had a four way tie was decided by a tiebreaker. The winner of this was Sohail from AVM School. Wing Choy Chen finished with an aggregate total of 640 points.
Whilst the judges were crunching points of all participants, a football quiz was hosted by Jaideep Gandhi of Triumph sports. It was fun and the participants with correct answers were presented with David Beckham posters.
The guests of honour for the grand finale were field hockey international & former India captain Viren Rasquinha and celebrity from bollywod and modeling industry Marc Robinson. They not only had some encouraging words for the participants but also emphasized the importance of academics along with sports. They gave away official Adidas merchandise as prizes to the winners. Wing Choy Chen was beaming from ear to ear when presented with official 2010 world cup match ball Jabulani along with the certificates.
The participating children and their parents had a thoroughly good time and we received a very positive feedback on the event held. When it all came to an end after noon, we were already thinking ahead to the next edition of the David Beckham skill contest and the search for the next Wing Choy Chen !!! Cheers
