US$ 450,000 Aircel Chennai Open, 2012

Postby sameerph » Wed Nov 23, 2011 4:38 am

Entry list is out for 2012 Chennai Open.

1. Tipsarevic, Janko SRB 9
2. Almagro, Nicolas ESP 10
3. Wawrinka, Stanislas SUI 17
4. Cilic, Marin CRO 22
5. Raonic, Milos CAN 31
6. Dodig, Ivan CRO 36
7. Haase, Robin NED 45
8. Fognini, Fabio ITA 48
9. Malisse, Xavier BEL 49
10. Rochus, Olivier BEL 67
11. Lu, Yen-Hsun TPE 82
12. Sela, Dudi ISR 84
13. Devvarman, Somdev IND 85
14. Darcis, Steve BEL 88
15. Riba, Pere ESP 89
16. Hanescu, Victor ROU 90
17. Kavcic, Blaz SLO 92
18. Querrey, Sam USA 93
19.Paire, Benoit FRA 94
20. Prodon, Eric FRA 97
21. Beck, Andreas GER 98

Looks like a much better entry list this time . IIRC, last time the entry cutoff was somewhere in 120's . Somdev makes the main draw comfortably which will allow us to give 3 wild cards to fellow Indians . ( if one of them is not given to foreigner as is usually done ).

Ok. I realised that there are only 21 direct entries this time . With 3 wild cards & 4 qualifiers , it means a draw of only 28 this time with byes to top 4 seeds.

Really strong entry list as all players r inside top 100 ... Surprised to see these days Sam Querrey is ranked so low.

With 9 guys from the top-50, this is possibly the best or among the best couple of entry lists we have had at Chennai Open in its 16 editions. Glad to see the tournament continuing to do fine, though we like to complain a lot about the Chennai Open people for various things they have done or not done over the years... Jay

That is a much better list than I expected. Well done. Now I hope they award the WC appropriately, both in the main draw & the qualifiers.

Surprised to see some many top 100 players. Chennai though definitely turns out well. I hope if one of the big guys turn up in chennai in year or two, it can take over overrated atp events like Beijing.

Recent atp china tournament was pretty pathetic. You didn't see much crowd. Japan had more crowd that China.

Btw, who's the most top ranked player to have played in chennai open history.

Cilic, Wawrinka, Tipsarevic , Malisse, Sela etc, have been regulars here for past 3-4 years. They have improve their ranking but still have chosen Chennai which shows they are doing something right. Almagro, Raonic seem to be the new ones. Where is that guy MC who was a big fan of Raonic ?

Nadal was there 3-4 years back . I am not sure if he was no. 1 ranked at that time but was certainly at least no. 2.

From Chennai open 'Indian Express-2" (?) will roll on ... Mahesh and Rohan r submitted entry for doubles as a pair ... Lee is submitted entry with partnering Radek Štěpánek but he doesn't submitted entry so may be wild-card or Lee partnering someone else or skip the tournament.

I would luv if Lee give a try with Sommy here ... If that clicks then this can be good pairing for Olympics.

I really doubt if lee will play with som. lee has never supported any indian player ( yes i know he once supported mahesh, but that was looooong ago ). few years ago at mumbai open, instead of playing with rb he played with aisam and has never partnered any indian, other than hesh.

Yes Nadal was No 2. Bdw I think the wild cards should go to Vishnu, Yuki and Karan. Please don't waste any on Bops. Only those playing singles should get a chance. Vishnu is my 1st choice as he hasn't got one before.

Yuki & Vishnu should get two of the WC. I don't particularly care who gets the other one - perhaps whoever ends up doing the best in the ongoing futures in India.

Yuki will get wc for sure. Vishnu is also playing great and should get the 2nd one. 3rd should go to karan, as an in form and fit karan will be a great asset, against istomin, in india vs uzb tie. Karan has always has close encounters with istomin and has also defeated him twice. so give karan opportunity to strike best form and he can put tremendous pressure on istomin on day one.

Lee to play with Tipsarevic in Chennai. For the rest of the season he will team up with Stepanek. There is an article in TOI on Paes and Bhupathi's different strategies to be ready for the Olympics which ultimately led to the split. Who knows, if Bhupathi-Bops don't do well, we may just have our original Indian Express back for the Olympics!

Not that I would like to see, but does anyone feel if if bops/bhupathi jodi gets knocked out early in kangroo and chennai open, than the team woujld go back to Paes/Bhupathi rite away starting tournaments in late feb/march. Maybe getting back to team up in first round of Davis cup in late feb and from there on being together.

The only negative I see here is that Rohan would be left alone. Since Qureshi would already have a team for next few months, Rohan would have to look for a partner. Poor Rohan
