Compound archery is much more competitive than recurve in terms of making any errors at all.
Jyothi Vennam's achievement of some 7 world championship medals (including her first gold here) would have gotten her a Khel Ratna for any other sport. It's very unfortunate and for no fault of her own that compound archery isn't an Olympic sport.

True, but i think because this is not being an Olympic sport top archery nations like Korea,China etc are not focusing that much. So, winning a medal in compound in world championships is much easier than recurve.

We have seen that in women's weightlifting. We were getting medals galore at world level when it was not an Olympic sport. But, after it became an Olympic sport, other nations overtook us and we are struggling to pick up an odd medal .

It is always easier to win medals when you are competing with 50 other folks instead of 5000. I am obviously exaggerating a bit but there is a world championship for stone skipping and the person who wins that doesn't deserve any national honors.

Anyway, whatever may be the depth, we had our best ever performance in compound archery in this world championships with 3 golds- womens team, Mens individual - Ojas Deotale and womens individual - 17 year old Aditi Swami, veteran Jyoti Vennam won bronze.

So, we have got stronger in compond atchery. Hope we can get 2-3 golds medals in Asiad as against only 2 silvers last time

Asian archery championships start in Bangkok on the 3rd.

We have zero athletes qualified so far, let’s see if the men can have a good tournament here (best team will get 3 spots, Korea and Japan are already qualified)

If mens can replicate their Asian games form, they will qualify. China, Indonesia, Iran and Taiwan will be in contention.

In Women, Korea have not qualified. So, it will be very tough for anyone else to get the quota here.

Strange that Atanu Das is not in the squad. He tends to be one of our strongest qualifiers. The qualification round is Sunday.

Looks like Atanu Das lost in trials. In a sport like Archery where we do not have too many archers winning medals or reaching later stages in world level events, it is not right to select the team only based on domestic trials. Need to give weightage to performances in international competitions particularly those like Asian games which were just held a couple of months back.

Good qualification round for men. Dhiraj Bommadevara fourth behind 3 Koreans with a score of 682 ( 7 more than his Asian games qualifying score), Tarundeep Rai 6th with 678 and Pravin Jadhav 16th with 667. Our team finished second behind Korea with 2027 ( 5 more than our qualifying score at Asian games). And could have been more had Atanu been in the team ( Atanu had 678 at Asian games) but still Koreans were too much ahead with 2061.

But, good that were clear second with 15 point lead over third placed Chinese Taipei who were ahead of us at Asian games.

And importantly we got into half other than Korea. So, barring Korea getting upset we can get a quota if we reach the final.

Our path will be Malaysia in PQF, likely Japan in QF and Chinese Taipei in SF.

Women qualification starts in half an hours time. We were 5th in qualification at Asian games. Lets see if we can improve on that and avoid Korea till final.

I disagree......Trials are necessary!!! We saw what happened to men boxing when they didn't hold trial.....Similarly, Bajrang who went without playing trials lost brutally......
I know many leftist newspaper like The Hindu, Quint pushed agenda of having no trials, but I am very skeptical of this!!!!

Trials should be one data point. It should have some number of points. This should be given more weight but not 100%. Combine it with previous tournament performance. In eseence, an Indian ranking system. Consider domestic performances for that too and then use it. Using more data points than one reduces or removes flukes. You have to design the weighting - perhaps exponential with time appropriately.

Valid point!!! But national ranking system may not be good idea. May be they should employ system similar to shooting!!!
Sending athletes just based on past performance is not a good idea. We just saw what happened in wrestling...

Wrestling was different. Bajrang did not participate in any competition ( national or international) in almost a year. So, it was clearly wrong to select him without any trial of any sort.

But, in this case, Atanu Das did decently well in Asian games just over a month back. Was clearly part of our 2 archers much ahead of everyone else and you discard him based on only one domestic trials. I am pretty sure he would have done well than at least our #3 archer here.

Yes, you are right!!! But the problem with sending players without trials is that the elite players take advantage of it using political influence. There was certainly some political influence behind Bajrang and Vinesh.. Lets forget wrestling for a minute!!! What if tomorrow a talented TT players came but he could not come in team as an elite player has enough achievements in the past and good political and media influence!!!

In men boxing, many players are accusing federation for not holding trials and sending undeserving boxers!!!
