2nd day

Post by BSharma »

Amritinder Singh was +5 today as he shot a 77. He had an eagle, birdies, pars, bogeys and a double bogey. Yesterday he had a 72.

Harmeet Singh Kahlon was +6 for the day. He had birdies on the first and second holes and then his game fell apart. Minus 3 on the first day and +6 on the second day!

The rest are still on the course.

Six golfers including Dinesh Chand of Fiji withdrew on the second day. ??Illness.

Retired players list is rising with 8 players retiring on 2nd day while two players retired on first day. This is kind of unique to see so many golfers retiring.

It was very windy out there and the 2nd round was not completed due to darkness. Very few (only 5)players were able to break par. Interestingly, there were 16 players with a card of -5 or better, with leader on -9 on the first day. Guess what, now only couple remains on -5 with one player still to finish round 2. So over par was the norm of the day.

Digvijay has yet to complete his round, Amritinder and Arjun Singh will miss the cut, while Harmeet and Uttam Singh Mundy are in the bubble. The scores as of now are:

Code: Select all

Pos Score Name
--------------------
21 -1 DIGVIJAY SINGH 69, (+2 of 14 holes)
29 0 AMANDEEP JOHL 69,75
68 3 HARMEET SINGH KAHLON 69,78
      3 UTTAM SINGH MUNDY 69,78
81 5 AMRITINDER SINGH 72,77
      5 ARJUN SINGH 69,80

Digvijay had a bad ending as he bogied 3 of the remaining 4 holes to finish at +3. The cut was applied at +2, so Digvijay, Harmeet, and Uttam missed the cut by one stroke. Only Amandeep has kept the Indian challenge alive for the weekend.

The qualifying tournament for Asian PGA Tour card started on January 7th, 2004 in Malaysia. I did not see names of any Indians in the tournament. Where is the Indian pipeline of young pro golfers?

Charandeep Thethy and Anil Shah from Kenya are in the field.

Last year too I noticed that there were no Indians in the qualifiers. Actually, for quiet few years I have seen same old bunch of Indian players on International tour, while some players dropping off. The Indian PGA tour itself is doing a good job but why don't we see them turning up for APGA tour? (except when APGA tour holds event in India)

Is finance a problem for young players to travel for qualifiers?

OK, there will be Indians in final stage of APGA qualifier and Ashok Kumar is also there.
The `Rookie of the year' for 2002-03 season, Ashok has had eight top-ten finishes, including a victory at the SERVO Masters at Digboi, this season.
"Now I can rightfully be called the No.1 golfer of the country," said a delighted Ashok. "This has definitely motivated me to give my best at the Asian PGA Qualifying School tournament," added Ashok, who has left for Malaysia to try and earn his Asian PGA Tour card, said Mukesh, who was surprisingly off colour and finished a dismal 24th at Pune, slid to the third position with total earnings of Rs 5,73,990 from 11 outings.
And so will be Gaurav Ghei ,
... field at the Qualifying School Finals includes experienced hands such as Gaurav Ghei of India, China's Cheng Jun, Lin Chie-hsiang of Taiwan and Japan's Satoshi Oide.
...
The top-80 players and ties after two rounds will qualify for the third and fourth rounds. The top-40 players will then earn their Tour cards.

Following players made the half way cut in the Final stage Qualifier

3, 137: Vivek Bhandari (Ind) 70-67
27, 144: Ashok Kumar- (Ind) 72-72
41, 145: Gaurav Ghei (Ind) 74-71
53, 146: Mukesh Kumar (Ind) 77-69
53, 146: Uttam Singh Mundy (Ind) 75-71

Five players in contention with Vivek at very good position to make it. Only top 40 players will then earn their Tour cards. Let us see how many goes through.

Following players missed the halfway cut (at 148 and ties)

149: Digvijay Singh (Ind) 71-78
150: Rahil Gangjee (Ind) 79-71
151: Amritinder Singh (Ind) 75-76
153: Gurbaaz Mann (Ind) 77-76
156: Reindert Mawuntu (Ind) 78-78
167: Bhavkaran Singh(Ind) 88-79

Digvijay and Amritinder played quiet regularly last year, unfortunately this time they'll miss APGA and they will probably just play Indian domestic PGA tour.
