Saurav Ghoshal thread - At $120K Hong Kong Open qualifying

Post by jaydeep »

This week Saurav played in qualifying of $120K Hong Kong Open,

At $120K Hong Kong Open 2006,

[Q1] Saurav Ghosal (IND) bt Josh Greenfield (NZL)  11-7 9-11 11-8 11-6

[Q2] Saurav Ghosal (IND) l Daryl Selby (ENG)  13-11 11-8 13-15 6-11 5-11

Big lost opportunity for Saurav with wasted match balls to qualify for such prestigious tournament ... :(
Saurav Ghoshal -"I didn't do much wrong, I just didn't play the right shots at the right time.

"I should have capitalized on those match balls in the third, but I played two really bad shots and he jumped on them.

"But he played really well in the fourth and fifth, and he deserved to win."

Saurav Ghosal qualified into the main draw at New York's Tournament of Champions!

Saurav Ghosal (IND) bt David Barnett (ENG) 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 (32mins)
Saurav Ghosal (IND) bt Chris Simpson (ENG) 11-4, 11-9, 11-8. (45mins)

Here is the detailed report from http://www.squashtalk.com/html2/news07/ ... -2-117.htm
GHOSAL SHOWS SIGNS OF  FUTURE STARDOM

Two 20 year olds gave a wonderful exhibition of fast, furious and accurate squash  to  give positive proof that they are definitely starts of the future.   Saurav Ghosal is a name you should certainly add to your memory bank. A native of Calcutta, but now living in Chenai,  Ghosal  moved to England two years ago to study at Leeds University while being mentored by England’s great Malcolm Willstrop, the coach who produced Lee Beachill and James Willstrop.  According to   Malcolm, Ghosal is definitely top 10 material as well as being extremely bright. He is one of the rare cases of a player  who is studying full time while also playing the circuit – and being successful at both.

By today’s standards he is small; while there seems to be a herd of six footers in the top twenty, Ghosal is 5’8” and weighs just 134 pounds, harking back to the days of the seventies when  Mohibullah Khan and Gaugi Alaudin  and four or five other Pakistanis were all chasing Geoff Hunt.

Chris Simpson comes from the Channel Islands and was Britain’s top junior until last year (he won’t be 20 until the end of March).  He too showed that he can  produced a high quality brand of squash that mixes  great retrievals with a fine touch at the front of the court. They played at a furious pace, hardly spoke to the referee, rarely got in each other’s way and, all in all, showed just how squash should be played.

Ghosal won in three but it was 45 minutes of very hard graft with some incredibly long rallies. Neither player seemed to tire and in the final analysis, Ghosal was slightly stronger mentally, rarely giving Simpson a point  and constantly finding the nick in the front right corner with a practiced back hand cut. Simpson is now full time on the circuit and on this evidence will soon find the  consistency that will make him a truly tough competitor. Ghosal and Simpson: remember the names.
Very nice words on "future stardom" for the 20 year old ..

Here is the main draw
http://www.squashtalk.com/html2/news07/ ... 07-2-3.htm

He plays #10 Olli Tuominen (FIN) in the main draw

Any of you New Yorkees want to make a trip down there and cheer the dude?

Sourav Ghoshal has qualified into the CIMB Kuala Lumpur Open, which begins at Bukit Jalil national sports complex today (the same location as last year's Azlan Shah Cup hockey), where I occasionally play tennis. If the matches are in the evening, I will try to go.

His final qualifying-round result:

Saurav Ghosal (Ind) bt Timothy Arnold (Mas) 11-8, 11-9, 11-4

Timothy Arnold started the year ranked #98 in the PSA rankings, and had a career-high ranking of 96 in November 2004. Good to see Sourav administer a comprehensive thrashing to the local lad!

Karim Darwish d. Saurav Ghoshal 11-2, 11-2, 11-3  :(

Two years ago, Ghoshal had made the semifinals at the KL Open. Now, his ranking is much higher, but he had to qualify. What is going on? I presume this is now a much higher-level tournament than it was two years ago. Can anyone throw any light on this?

PKB, you are right this 'KL Open' getting bigger ... In 2005 when Saurav Ghoshal made to semis this tournament was mere $7K tournament ... Now in 2007 it is $44K tournament so lot more higher seeded players r attracted to participate in it.
