PGA Tour Championship - second day

Post by BSharma »

It appears that Tiger needed an extended vacation (honeymoon) to clear his mind of any doubts about his game, golf swing, etc. After dusting off the rust from his game yesterday he came back with a vengeance and has 6 birdies after playing 16 holes.

Mike Weir and Retief Goosen are trying to hold up the flag for the International players by playing superbly today, and Jay Haas seems to have taken a page from Vijay's book and is playing the best golf of his life at 50 years of age.

Vijay's game is going south in the southern city of Atlanta and he has four bogeys and one birdie after playing 13 holes. It appears that his putter is deserting him once again.

Stewart Cink is sinking faster than the fortunes of the democrats in southern and mid-west USA.

More later on once the second round is over.

PGA Tour Championship - second day

Post by BSharma »

Jay Haas had his best performance to date this year in January when he finished third at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, and in the last tournament of 2004 PGA he is giving Vijay, Tiger, Ernie Els and the other younger players a run for their money. Can he come up with four scintilatting rounds of golf in Atlanta?

Tiger had the best round today with six birdies and no bogeys. Can you keep a champion golfer down for too long?

Vijay needed 35 putts to play 18 holes today! Is it time to get the belly putter?

Ernie has yet to rediscover his form after the hand injury and has not had a sub-par round in Atlanta this year.

The less said about Phil, the better. Can he go back to his old golf set? Yeah, we have heard about how he does not play well in the second half of the season but if only the top half of the players were going to make the cut at the Tour Championship, Phil would be heading home today, just like he did last week also.

What happened to the "smiling assasin" Shigeki Maruyama? Felled by his own bullet?

2004 PGA Tournament - Arjun/Daniel/Vijay/(Jyoti)

Post by ajay »

Nice to see Tiger coming back. He is young and great player. Although he is no longer #1 but he is going to be in contention for #1 players for many years to come.

I think as soon as people start talking about Vijay's streaks, he comes under pressure and breaks the streak. Early this year, he was having a good streak of finishing in top 10s, and if I remember correctly, he lost it by missing the cut. This time he was having a long streak of rounds par or under par, he broke it by stumbling to 3 over par round. Anyway, now the pressure of maintaining that streak is gone, he should come back in contention tomorrow. Go Vijay!!!

2004 PGA Tournament - Arjun/Daniel/Vijay/(Jyoti)

Post by PKBasu »

Vijay has defied the law of averages all year long (actually for almost two years on the trot), but it seems to have caught up with him at last in the final event of this year. Let's hope he returns to the norm -- of defying the law of averages -- again in the final two rounds. My hunch is that he will...

2004 PGA Tournament - Arjun/Daniel/Vijay/(Jyoti)

Post by BSharma »

Vijay Singh won the PGA Tour championship in Atlanta 2 years back and his worst round then was also on the second day. However, his scores of 65, 71, 65 and 67 in 2002 were better than his scores on the first two days in 2004.

The scores in 2004 are higher than in 2002 partly because of the heavy rain and the decision by the organizers to not allow the golfers to lift and clean the ball.

If Tiger had only known earlier that a married life will elevate his game to his previous level of excellence he would have gotten married in January 2004!

Tiger reached to the top of the leaderboard after another sensational round of golf today. Jay Haas, representing the hopes and aspirations of the older people in the world, is trying to keep pace and not giving an inch to his much younger rivals.

Vijay is out of contention after the third round.

2004 PGA Tournament - Arjun/Daniel/Vijay/(Jyoti)

Post by jaydeep »

Superb golfing round by Tiger ... Had six birdies and 1 bogey ... Looking at Tiger's phenomenal record of winning 30 of 32 tournaments when entering in last round as leader tell us, he will mostly put season ending PGA Tour Championship in pocket ... His only worry is Jay Hass (who's last win came 10 years back in 1993) and others r 4 strokes or more behind from him.

PGA Tour Championship - fourth day

Post by BSharma »

Oh, what a difference a year makes. Until last year Tiger's position at the top of the leaderboard at the conclusion of the third round was as good as money in the bank. Tiger Woods and Jay Haas led Mike Weir, Stephen Ames and Retief Goosen by four strokes but this is 2004 - a year when Tiger has not won a stroke play tournament all year long.

Tiger and Jay played the front nine holes with more bogeys than birdies, while Retief kept on inching closer with birdies. Three birdies by the 15th hole brought Tiger back to even score for the day but Retief was closing the deal with birdies of his own. In the end the US Open Champion won the PGA Tour Championship going away and Tiger ended the official PGA Tour season with a disappointment. However, a wedding ring is probably better than a Tour Championship trophy.

Vijay was not satisfied with his 16th place at the start of today's play and he gave it his all to get back into contention. Eight birdies and one bogey in the first 15 holes got him in the top 5 but bogeys on the next two holes dropped him to 9th place.

Final scoreboard:
1 T3 Retief Goosen -6 F -11 70 66 69 64 269
2 T1 Tiger Woods 2 F -7 72 64 65 72 273

PGA Grand Slam of Golf

Post by BSharma »

The silly season that follows the regular PGA Tour has unique tournaments.

The winner of the four "majors" play for $1 million prize money at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Phil (Masters), Todd Hamilton (British), Retief Goosen (US Open) and Vijay Singh (PGA) will vie for the title at the 7,014 yard-Poipu Bay Golf Course in Kauai. The winner pockets $400,000 and the last place earns $150,000. Vijay has played this event twice in 1998 and 2000 and finished second to Tiger on both occasions.

The tournament starts on Tuesday and it is a 2-day 36 hole event.

Looking at current form ... Battle is between Vijay and Retief ... After win at PGA Tour Championship (beating Tiger from 4 strokes deficit) Retief would be full of confidence ... But after poor performance (from his own standard as he finished creditably on 9th position) in PGA Tour Championship, Vijay will be out to prove point why he is No.1 golfer in the world ... It would be very interesting battle to watch.

You are absolutely right. The battle is between Vijay and Goosen. Vijay needs to display his top game to beat in form Goosen. Come on Vijay!!

Amazing round by Mickelson so far. After 10 holes, he is 8 under for the day with an eagle and 6 birdies and leads the field at -12. The only holes that he parred today so far are #1,8 and 10  . Hopefully, he'll par more in the remaining holes to give other players some chances. Vijay has 4 birdies for today and Goosen has 3 birdies and both are tied for 2nd spot at -10.

Well! Vijay just dropped a shot on the 11th while others made a par.

The scores:
1 Phil Mickelson -12 11 -8
2 Retief Goosen -10 11 -3
3 Vijay Singh -9 11 -3
4 Todd Hamilton +1 11 +3
