Re: Indian Boxing Thread
All 4 finalists won!
Would they have won if the championships were being held anywhere else? Really doubt it, especially the split decisions that went our way here.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
That may well be the case...but i would take it as we lose medals too often to poor refereeing else where. Fantastic 4 show...couldn't have asked for better!

There is always a bit of home bias in judging even if the judges are from neutral countries.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Excellent performance by Indian male boxers at world Championships in Tashkent as 3 of our boxers are thru to SF and assured of a medal - Deepak Kumar in 51 kg, Hassamuddin in 57 kg and Nishant Dev in 71 kgs.
Deepak beat defending champion from Kazakhstan in second round and Nishant Dev beat a Cuban boxer in QF, probably first time an Indian boxers has beaten a Cuban in world Championships.
Let's how much further they progress

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
3 Indian boxers confirming medals by moving into Semifinals in IBA World Boxing Championship at Tashkent would have been an over achievement had the US and European block of countries not boycotted the tournament.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
All 3 boxers lost their SF's and got bronze medals. Still, it is pretty good performance by our men boxers.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Our boxers have been competing at STRANDJA boxing tournament Bulgaria which is quite a good level tournament.
Our 4 men boxers and 2 women boxers are thru to the finals which will be played today.
Barun Singh Shagolshem (48kg), Sachin (57kg), Rajat (67kg) and Amit Panghal (51 kg) on mens side. Good to see Amit getting back to form.
On Womens side Nikhat Zareen (50Kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (66kg) have made it to the final. Nikhat has beaten 2 boxers who have qualified for olympics and in the final fights Uzbek boxer who beat Asian games gold medalist from China in the SF. The Chinese had earlier beaten the Thai boxer who had beaten Nikhat in the Asian games semi final. So, it is good test for Nikhat in the final against an opponent who appears as to be his Asian peer.
Lovlina had a first round loss though against 2023 European games silver medalist Aoife O Rourke from Ireland. O Rourke appears good as she beat Asian games Champion from China in the SF. Chinese had beaten Lovlina in the Asian games final.

Nikhat lost 2-3 in the final against Uzbek boxer who has not yet qualified for Olympics. Overall, still a decent tournament for her.

Amit and Sachin won their finals, I have not researched the level of their opponents.

Amit beat 48 kg 2023 World champ Sanzhar Tashkenbay . So, it was quite a decent show by Amit after some time.Sin Hombre wrote: ↑Sun Feb 11, 2024 5:50 pm Amit and Sachin won their finals, I have not researched the level of their opponents.
But, Amit and Saching are not part of Indian team for Olympic qualifiers at the end of February. 2023 world championships bronze medalists Deepak Bhoria and Mohammed Hussamuddin are selected in their weight categories. So, if Deepak and/or Hasamuddin win a quota in that tournament it is end of the road for Amit and Sachin for Paris Olympics as I think in case of boxing, it is the boxer who earns a quota and not the country.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
4 boxers ( all semi finalists) in mens categories qualify for Paris Olympics. In womens categories. In womens 60 kg, there will a box off between losing semi finalists as only 3 will qualify for Paris.
Read some analysis on twitter and other forums about predictions for mens for this based on draws. Summarizing this-
51 kgs
Deepak Bhoria was 2023 world championship bronze medalist. He has boxers from Azerbeijan and Georgia in first 2 rounds, not easy but hopefully he will get thru. He will likely to run into 2021 WC silver medalist American Roscoe Hill in the QF with winner getting the olympic quota.
57kg
Mohammed Hussamuddin was also a bronze medalist in 2023 world championship. He has a tricky first round against an Irish boxer but most likely he will get thru first 2 rounds, likely QF against Philipno Palam or a German or a Venzualan.
63.5 Kg
Our most experienced boxer Shiva Thapa is here but he has tough bout first up against reigning world champion Ruslan Abdullaev from Uzbekistan. So, Shiva will have to pull off a big upset and won a couple of more tough bouts to qualify. Does not look likely.
71 kg
Nishant Dev has a tricky first round against England's Richardson with the winner likely to get into potential QF against 2021 WC silver medalist Omari Jones of US.
There does not seem to be much chance in 80 kg, 92 kg and 92 kg1+, just hoping one of them will spring a surprise.
So, Hopefully 1 or 2 out of 3- Deepak, Hassamuddin and Nishant will qualify for Paris. 2 qualifiers would be good, anything more would be great.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
We get a shocker first up as Deepak Bhoria lost in first round in a split decision 2-3 against Azerbeijan boxer. There is no live streaming for earlier rounds so no way no know if the result was fair. 1 judge game it 30-27 in favour of Deepak, another one gave 29-28 to Deepak but other 3 judges gave it 29-28 to Azerbeijan boxer.
