So, how many have punched the tickets to Tokyo, and how many more have a chance? [sorry; didn't follow things closely]

Yes, both Marykom and Simranjeet came with dominant unanimous wins.

So, we have 4 out 5 possible berths in Women and 4 out of 8 possible berths in main so far. 8 quotas so far as compared to 3 at Rio. But, if we consider last olympics as a bit of aberration ( as our federation was in mess), we had 8 at London which we have now equalled.

2 more chances here in men - Sachin Kumar who has to win 2 rounds against relatively weak opponents from Tajikistan,Thailand or Vietnam and Manish Kaushik who has to win 1 round against a strong Australian in a repeat of their CWG final which Kaushik lost but it was at home for an Australian.

Then, any of these 2 if they do not make it here and 3 remaining spots will get a chance at world qualifying tournament in April to try for quotas.

Just using my playbook to analyse past performances in 2016 Olympics boxing to predict outcomes in 2020. In 2016 Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and India qualified 12, 11 and 3 respectively for Rio.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxing_ ... lification

The outcome was Uzbek had 7 medals including 3 Gold, Kazakhs had 5 medals including 1 Gold and India returned empty handed.

Now in 2020 we are already topping the Asian qualifiers with 8 followed by kazakhs at 7 , Uzbek and China joined 3rd at 5 qualifiers.

I don’t believe India became a powerhouse in boxing just like that in a year with all the association mess we had.For me it seems like we were always more or less at same level but IOC taking over conducting not just the Olympics tournament but also the qualifiers seems to be the reason behind. Was following the discussions in totalympics forums and seems some feel the judges have been fairer than what they used to be under AIBA but some think Jordan as host got a heavy bias. Not sure who is right as I haven’t watched any matches but request comments from some one who did.

With some box-offs and world qualification tourney still to happen we seem to be well on our way to be sending full capacity contingent of 13 in all weights to Tokyo

More than judging bias, I think Jordan's boxers benefited from a weak draw. They successfully avoided boxers from KAZ and UZB. We also seem to have received the same benefit. Except for Gaurav Solanki in 57 kg, our male boxers avoided anyone from KAZ and UZB, and our female boxers avoided anyone from CHN and TPE.

Also on the same topic, unlike KAZ and UZB, we seem to have more quantity than quality. I don't think anyone can be counted as a Gold medal prospect. Lovlina is a genuine medal contender, Amit and Krishnan are also medal prospects; but Amit will have to perform much better than how he did here. And of course, to get a medal, they will again need the luck of the draw.

I agree with you in this aspect. Our 2 mens world medalist from last world championships- Amit Panghal and Manish Kaushik have not looked that good this week. Manish has to win a tough one against an Australian today to even qualify while Amit had 2 close wins in at least one of which he did seem to get a faour from judges.

In Women, apart from Lovlina, Marykom and Simranjeet can be medal prospects.

Lets us watch our qualfied boxer's performances in semi final and finals here before determining their medal prospects. In men, Vikas is meeting WC bronze medalist from Kazakhstan, Ashish is facing WC silver medalist from Philipines while Satish is facing WC gold medalist. Lets see how they fare against these boxers. If any of them can win or at least put up a close fight, we can put them as medal prospects for Tokyo.

While in Women, Marykom, Lovlina and Pooja Rani fight strong Chinese boxers while Simranjeet faces a Taiwanese. Lets see how they fare there.

3 of the semi finals done in the morning session.

Amit and Lovlina lost to their Chinese opponents while Vikas Krishan beat the WC bronze medalists from Kazakhstan. Lovlina was beaten fair and square in a unanimous decision which is disappointing since she is considered a medal prospect for Tokyo. Amit lost in a split decision 2-3 in a decision which was very close and could have gone either way. Vikas was excellent against a top quality boxer in a split decision win.

Time to add Vikas in our Tokyo medal projections list and perhaps downgrade Amit from the top level based on this performance.

Rest of our 5 semi finals will be in the evening session.

I think there is one more tournament, right? How many more chances do people have among those that do not qualify this time? Or is this it?

So, basically we will have about 10+/-1 people at Tokyo in the end for boxing, but about 2 medals are what we should look for. Maybe only 1, but we should be very happy if it is three. Am I right?

One more tournament- world qualifying in France in May where 3 to 5 spots will be available for each weight category.

In this tournament, we have 2 boxers - Sachin and Manish in the final 5/6 playoff for qualifying spot. Hope we get at least 1 of them thru to make it to a total of 9 here.

Then, try to get 2-3 at world qualifying to get to a total of 11-12. Great if we can get a full quota of 13.

I think you are about right...but to be more precise you may add that returning with 0 medals is also possibility, as Indiansportsfan said we only have quantity not quality in boxing
