Afro-Asian Games-Hockey-Indian men & women are Champions

PKBasu wrote:Surprisingly strong performances by Nigeria (3-4 against Pakistan and 3-5 against India). This is not a traditional hockey power: South Africa and Egypt are traditionally the strongest African teams, but Nigeria appears to be a team to watch out for in the future.
Coach Rajinder Singh said that Nigeria played rough and he was happy to have no
serious injuries from that tie and a win was good enough. I saw the India - Pak match --
was fun. Pakistan missed a penalty when the shot which had clearly beaten the goalie
hit the post. A similar thing happened with a penalty corner late in the game. India also
did not capitalise on a couple of breakaways. A good win because we get to play Malaysia
instead of South Korea.

That seems to be a good win for the Indian women. S.Korea was expected to win the semi against us, right?

I was surprised that India beat Korea by 3-0 in women's hockey. Korea nearly defeated China but their match ended in a draw after the Korean goalkeeper moved the wrong way following a feeble attempt by a Chinese player during a penalty stroke.

Unofficially the Chinese women are ranked 3rd, Koreans 6th and Indians 10th. But some of the teams are not at full strength. However, if some countries decide not to send their #1 team it is by their own choice and a victory is a victory. Go India!

Unexpectedly tough match against Malaysia in the semifinal. It was 1-1 after extra-time, and the match was decided on a penalty shoot-out.

Outstanding :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

To beat Korea and South Africa at the same tournament is simply great. South Africa will be in the Olympics and recently won the African Games Championship.

Let us see if our men can duplicate the achievement of the Indian women.

Our women's team is now the reigning Commonwealth Games Champion and Afro-Asian Games Champion. :D

Too bad that the team will not be at the 2004 Olympics unless one team drops out of the qualifying tournament and India does well to qualify.

Wow, India can now claim to be the Afro-Asian Games Champion in both men and women's hockey. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

This should give a big psychological edge to the Indian team over our neighbor to the west. I remember in the 1980s when the Indian team would routinely lose to the Pakistanis.

Resting the key Indian players turned out to be a good choice.

It is of course entirely appropriate that the Asian champions in hockey should win the Afro-Asian Games gold too. But the manner of the victory was what has to stand out. A thorough shellacking, of the sort Pakistan is now getting used to receiving from us. And that, without 6 of our greatest stalwarts. The new age of Indian hockey is here for good. Onto Olympic Gold in Athens.

Here's the rediff report:

At least the Asia Cup champions (India) don't have to qualify for the World Cup in 2006, which is to be held in Moenchengladbach, Germany. That, incidentally, happens to be the textile town that is the home of the Bundesliga football side Borussia Moenchengladbach -- which won the Bundesliga at least 2 (possibly 3) times in the 1970s. I remember simply because I always supported them as a teenager -- as they were the great underdogs relative to Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, etc.

great sight to watch

Post by david »

today AAG winners, the Indian women's team played five-a-side rink hockey in Bangalore.

Team divided into India Blue and India Yellow played in between the semifinals of the rink hockey corporate tourney conducted by Ahsish Ballal's Academy.

On the stage were five Olympians

Ahsish Ballal, Jude Felix, Negi, MK Kaushik and Baljit Singh Saini.

Long time since I saw so many Olympians together...Great sight!
