Chinese women's team

Post by BSharma »

The Chinese women's team failed to show up for their first match. The team was scheduled to reach Hyderabad on Wednesday and play their match against Nigeria on Thursday but now the team will reach Hyderabad on Friday and play their match on the same day.

So football is not the only sport with a controvery involving a missing team. I hope the Commonwealth Games reviewers are not taking too many notes about the scheduling conflicts at the Afro-Asian Games.

Disappointing loss for Indian girls. hope they can come back. I guess they are still not over losing the qualifying tournament to USA.

Surprisingly strong performances by Nigeria (3-4 against Pakistan and 3-5 against India). This is not a traditional hockey power: South Africa and Egypt are traditionally the strongest African teams, but Nigeria appears to be a team to watch out for in the future.

PKBasu, I agree with you about Nigeria. The Nigerians are superb athletes and if they are given proper training then Nigeria can become a top notch hockey team.

Nice to see that victories over Pakistan in hockey are now almost routine! And that, even without six of our stalwarts (including Dhanraj Pillai and Baljit Dhillon).

Actually it's been a titanic struggle this year to stamp our superiority over Pakistan. After two decades of relative futility, however, I think we now have a team that is clearly superior to Pakistan's best. And our junior pipeline is much stronger too.

Here's the rediff report on the India-Pakistan match:
http://in.rediff.com/sports/2003/oct/27aaghock.htm

Gagan Ajit Singh (with two goals) was the hero.
