Sunil Kumar Sipaeya ...

Post by PKBasu »

There may well be an old thread for Sunil. But he fell out of sight after an injury, and appeared to have failed to live up to his enormous potential over the past 3 years (since winning the national men's title at 16, like Leander Paes and Ramesh Krishnan before him).
In the past fortnight, he has struggled his way back to form in Tunisia, making the semifinal and final of successive Futures. Sunil is back -- and aren't we all glad to see it!!

Oh, he is not much old at all. He just turned 20 a couple of months back .. He has a lot of time. Hopefully the injury problems are behind him and he is ready to head back up in the rankings where he belongs!

Come on back, Sunil. We missed ya!

Wonderful double triumph for Sunil.
Now he needs to build on this -- by ensuring he is injury-free during the Karnataka Challengers, and picking up a host of points during those three points-rich events.
Sunil and Prakash are effectively the same age, although Sunil was certainly much the more promising player when they were juniors. In fact, at that stage Sunil appeared to be head-and-shoulders ahead of everyone else among the 16-22 year olds playing tennis in India (basically, well ahead of everyone except for Leander and Mahesh). But he has faced severe setbacks in the past 12-15 months, part of which must have included the psychological setback of no longer being seen as the pre-eminent future hope of Indian tennis.
But it was enterprising of him to go to North Africa (Tunisia, Morocco), and earn his way back into reckoning the hard way. It is never easy being a professional sportsman, and being a tennis pro is especially lonely. It was good to see Ajay and others also doing it the hard way in north Africa.

Time to fully resurrect this thread, now that Sunil has made the quarterfinal of the Fergana challenger, beating 3rd seeded Lee Child in the second round, 6-2, 6-0. (What a score-line!). And that was his second consecutive win over a top-400 player.
Sunil is still around 530 in the rankings but he will be closer to Rohan Bopanna's ranking after this.
He plays team-mate Harsh Mankad in the quarter-final in Fergana.

Actually Sunil Kumar will leap over Rohan to the #3 spot with a rank around #455 next week, with RB at #475

I feel bad for RB. This must feel terrible that he is not playing at Fergana... Get well fast RB, if you are still not 100% .. We need the Fearsome Foursome of Indian tennis traveling together and conquering places!

Sunil's own ranking, of course, is heavily depressed by the fact that he missed all the Satellites, Futures and Challengers in India before September last year -- where Prakash, Harsh, Rohan all picked up a bulk of their points. SKS was only back in time for the November Futures. He definitely belongs in the Fearsome Foursome (nice term for them, Jay!).

Coming through the qualifiers clearly helped Sunil here. Lee Childs had beaten Ajay (in 3 tough sets) in the R1 of the Uzbek F3 two weeks ago (where Sunil made the quarters), so this is nice revenge on behalf of his doubles partner.

Sunil has played for the past few weeks. I suppose he might try the two Kuwait futures next. Anyone has any idea of his schedule?

Making the semi-finals of the Fergana Challenger was easily the biggest achievement of Sunil's career. He was also in good form in several Futures over the past two months.
