Champions Trophy tournament August 2003

Yeah, people have been warning this team before the tournament to get their act together and stop acting like whiny children. Some of it comes from Dhanraj's style I suppose. Come on guys, you are good. Stop arguing and just do your job..

Champions Trophy tournament August 2003

There have been lot of articles about how the Indian players argue a lot. There was even suggestion that the referees at the domestic tournaments need to get their act together and start showing cards when players argue in domestic tournaments.

Lets hope our guys can get their act together and stop arguing. Even if there is a biase against indian players (which may be true) we have to just take it in the stride and prove that we are much better

I hadn't noticed this thread earlier (and had instead reported on the Champions Trophy in the thread entitled "Hockey revival continues...". I disagree with Kumar's view on Dhanraj and that key goal in the first match against Holland. CNN actually showed very extensive highlights of this match, which I had the pleasure of seeing. That was definitely not a goal: the Indian back had his feet inside the goal-line, but his stick was definitely in front of the goal-line, and he prevented the ball from passing the goal-line. So it wasn't a goal, and Dhanraj was right to protest (although he did go a bit over-board, as is his wont). His yellow-card was a huge blow to India (as was that goal). Without those two things, India would have probably won 3-2 -- inflicting the only defeat on Holland in the tournament.
Otherwise, the key problem with India's strategy in other matches was the poor use of the unlimited substitution rule that exists in Hockey (a la basketball). By the time Rajinder figured this out, India were already out of contention. But the psychological boost of a win over Holland in game 1 could well have propelled India to the title.
At any rate, it was a good learning experience, and I think India are still very much on track to be a strong gold medal contender (along with Holland and Germany) in Athens next year. The key will be to ensure that India wins its first two matches (which have usually been India's bane in every Olympics since 1980).
