Post by sameerph »

Opening a thread for European challengers for this year as many of our players ( mainly in doubles but also a few in singles) will be playing same tournaments in a week.

Next week at Murcia Challenger 75, Sumit Nagal will be a seed in main draw as discussed in his thread, Ramkumar Ramanathan has made the qualifying draw.

In doubles, Jeevan-VSP and Anirudh with David Vega Hernandez will be seed and RamK will be partnering Edas Butvilas.

RamK is down 46 22 to Facundo Juarez (ITA,486)...
Got broken at 30-40 to 5-6 but saved a 40-30 MP and broke back to 46 66... TB starting...
Was up a minibreak at 1-0 and 3-1, but then lost 6 points in a row. :(

At the Challenger 75 in Murcia, Spain (Clay)

[Q1] (12) Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND,451) l. Facundo Juarez (ITA,486), 46 67(3)

Better performance from Ram on clay when we compare it with his performance in 2023!! Now he needs to do well in upcoming tournaments and grab some points because he is losing 33 points and he would be like 560!! So, needs to start winning matches!!

RamK going down hill with age. His grit and determination helped him make one more come back. He just lost his touch in between. But now he should focus on doubles.

Let's face it, he is done in singles. He will stay in this range and then slide out.
As you say better to switch to doubles.

Even Sumit looks headed that way. Reached 68 and now is closer to 150. Either injuries or some problem or other. Could be motivation also. He is 27 so window is closing.

My only hope now is Nishesh (I don't really care about his passport) and Dhamne.

Sorry to interrupt, but Nishesh isn't representing India and his achievement would go to the USA, not India. So, we can't say Nishesh as a hope. Manas is a choice!!
And about Sumit. You are looking at the W-L of 2024 and 2025. But I am saying it again, in terms of game development, this Sumit Nagal is better than the Nagal who upsets Bublik. You need to look out game-wise, then performance. I am pretty sure that Sumit would do well today against Llamas Ruiz!!

I still think Sumit has a good 3-4 yrs of top caliber tennis left. He is only 28.

Sumit, Nishesh and Manas are the ones for me. Waiting to see if Samir Banerjee has a chance when he turns pro.

I haven’t given up Sumit too. He will have a few more runs into the top 100. I hope he cracks top 50.

Nagal loses in straight sets 4-6,1-6 against Llamas Ruiz in first round , looked rather clueless on court, with tons of unforced errors on forehand side, unlike himself not much patience in groundstrokes, it's getting really tough for him to win any matches at any level.

It should be good if Sumit indeed falls below 200-300. He would be able to regroup again to make it back into the top 100.

My fear is that he isn’t recovering fully from the injuries. Hence like Yuki and Karman, he might need longer break.

One of the worst matches Sumit has ever played!! I mean come on!! It was so frustrating to watch. Maybe that flu came into play and lack of match practice may lead to him. Now, in Naples, he needs to do well!! He is defending 115 points till RG. After 115 points drop, his ranking would be 180. If he really want to change Indian Tennis, he needs to start winning matches, no matter what happens!!
