^^^ Remember that match , LB , MB were there too and the year was 2002 , and as far as I can remember , both the Lebanese were unranked and not even on the ranking list , need to check the records later , but i remember something on those lines when the tie was being played

Yeah, now I remember the 2002 Lebanon tie details now. LP was there, but he was ranked low and I think Harsh Mankad may have been our #1, on ranking. LP had stopped singles after Wimbledon 2001 and had no pro wins since then. Karim Alayli, a top 1000-1200 player, was probably their #1 but Ali Hamadeh was their better player. Hamdeh (an American who was playing for Lebanon) was no chicken feed, as he was the NCAA doubles champion at Ole Miss Univ with Mahesh Bhupathi in 1995 and was also ranked #6 in singles in college, higher than Mahesh. About #812 career high in singles but top-150 in doubles later. Though unranked, that dude was expected to trouble us and we knew that LP had to come through, with some doubts on LP's singles form too, as he was not playing singles at all except in DC. The key match was really between Hamadeh and Harsh, for Lebanon to have a chance at an upset. So it was not a gimme tie, and we could have run into trouble, if Harsh were to screw up with two losses and LP had to beat Hamadeh on the third day. But Hamadeh turned out to be nothing formidable like feared, Harsh easily took him out on Day 1, and we figured we didn't have to worry at all to start with!

^^Looks like someone edited my post to format it better. Thanks. Hope the details helped reconstruct the musings. The score lines are very impressive—one sided as they should have been despite the apprehensions. Are the Togo results summarized in this thread nicely like this? Want to check how one sided it was relative to this or other “gimme” ties.

[I had edited it. I occasionally do cosmetic edits and sometimes typo errors too that many of you might not notice! Mod, Jay]

My guess is LP was easily our best player in 2002 (say if UTR existed then) especially on hard courts in Davis Cup when he would be fired up to play.

In 2001, when he played a reasonable amount, he had a 8-3 record against players in the 100-350 ranking which means he was likely a 150-200 level player even then. He also took a set of #15 Roddick. Even in 2002 and 2003, his only losses came to top 100 players.

Yeah, LP was at least a 200-250 level player at that time, even when he was not playing singles except in Davis Cup. The worry was mostly on thins like some injury or other, which might not matter in doubles but could be trouble in singles. If he were to twist an ankle in Davis Cup, we were going to be dead-meat because there was only Harsh Mankad available as even a top-400 quality player.

Some hard hitting words by Anand towards Yuki & Sumit.

"You got 50 weeks in the year to make money, two weeks of the year, you should able to give to places you grew up in and it should be an honour and a privilege."

That is your wrong and skewed judgment, Anand wouldn't stoop so low for few dollars to state the facts.

Yuki and Sumit are correct not to make themselves available for DC against Togo. Clearly, our next generation can win. And, no, two weeks for the nation and 50 weeks to make money is an utterly stupid comment. Anand should know that players cannot play for 52 weeks. Maybe 20-24 weeks at max? Or whatever. And, it is about patterns. You play a few tournaments and then rest and then go and play another few tournaments. If you upset your schedule for a DC tie against Togo, then at least 2-3 other week's tournaments are affected due to ripple effects of planning. These are pros who are fine-tuning their body and game by playing an optimal schedule and any disruption makes it sub-optimal and often very disruptive. I would not do it for Togo. When needed, they can make themselves available. At the end of the day, it is their body and their life. Whether they want to play for the country is their choice. Anand has a choice to say whatever simplistic nonsense wants to but that shows his lack of recognition of the complexities of the modern game. He just made a flippant, jingoistic comment I think.
