BWF tournaments Mar 2024

Post by Sin Hombre »

This is it for Olympics qualification. The two big questions left are can Lakshya get back in the top-16 and who will emerge victorious between Ashwini/Tanisha and Treesa/Gayatri.

From an Olympic medal perspective, we also need HSP and Sindhu to finish with a top-8 seeding and have Satwik/Chirag stay within the top-2.

German Open (Feb 27 - Mar 3) Super-300
Main point of interests are Treesa/Gayatri who are the 4th seeds here, and Kiran George

French Open (Mar 5 - Mar 10) Super-750
Everyone plays this
MS - Priyanshu with an unfortunate first round draw against Axelsen, Lakshya with similarly ranked Tsuneyama in R1 and rising Chinese #3 Li Shifeng in R2; will be tough for him. Prannoy has #17 Chinese and winner of veterans Srikanth and CTC in R2.
WS - PVS has familiar foes with a winnable R1 against Michelle Li and then long-term rival Marin in R2.
MD - SatChi have a good draw
WD - we have a direct clash between our 2 pairs here, winner gets beatable Japanese seeded pair in R2.

All England Open (Mar 12 - Mar 17) Super-1000
This is an interesting week with a super-300 happening the same week
MS - Srikanth draws Axelsen here. HSP has a good draw. Lakshya against has a similarly ranked opponent. Priyanshu has a winnable R1.
WS - PVS again with a winnable R1 but ASY in R2. Kind of unfortunate she hasn't drawn one of the weaker seeds.
MD - SatChi have a really tough draw with tough Indonesian pairs in R1 and R2 and Malaysian nemesis in QF
WD - Both pairs have as good a draw as you can hope for at a super-1000 as unseeded entrants. Hopefully one will make a run to the QFs

Orleans Masters (Mar 12 - Mar 17) Super-300
Lots of second string Indians here in MD or qualification but no Anmol, Unnati or Tanvi - we really should have been giving them more opportunities.

Swiss Open (Mar 19 - Mar 24) Super-300

Spain Masters (Mar 26 - Mar 31) Super-300

I am hoping Lakshya and Treesa/Gayatri are both playing the last 2 Super-300s. Need points from wherever they can get.

I am quite surprised that Lakshya is still not playing 300 level tournaments. He absolutely needs to play the last 2.

I think apart from these March tournaments, Asian individual championships in April will count towards olympic qualification.

Amazing anaylsis Sin Hombre :D !!! Unnati participated in Orleans Masters but withdrew due to injury. She also withdrew from Thai masters and Sri lanka IC last month. But she is in the list of Swiss open along with Anmol. Unnati will get chance throught Qual. while Anmol won't as her rank is too low as of now.

thanks pancakes - glad that Lakshya, PVS, Ashwini/Tanisha and Treesa/Gayatri are entered in both tournaments. They can pull out if they win or reach the finals in an earlier week but right now, they all need every tournament.

Treesa/Gayatri are through to the quarters of German open. Next up is similarly ranked Chinese pair and this is an important match for them if they want to qualify for Paris.

Treesa/Gayatri lost in the QFs so that's that. Not much gained here.

Treesa/Gayatri beat Ashwini/Tanisha in 3 close games at the French open keeping their own hopes alive. I hope at least one of our pairs qualifies to Paris and it is not a case of both of them just missing out.

Satwik/Chirag with a comfortable win, and Lakshya finished strong after a slow start.

Good start to the Super 750 French open.

Sindhu with an amazing comeback win from a game and 7-14 down in second game to finally win 20-22, 22-20, 21-19 against 24th ranked Michelle Lee of Canada.

Srikanth with a very good win 14th ranked Tien Chen Chou but Prannoy lost against 17th ranked Lu Guang Zhu. Prannnoy's form is slipping away now.

Now, Srikanth plays Zhu in second round while Lakshya plays third seed Chinese Li Shi Feng.

Sindhu against American Beiwen Zhang who beat Marin in first round.

Good to see Sindhu and Lakshya Sen seemingly in good form.

Prannoy hasn't played well this year so far outside of one event. Srikanth's win was a surprise. If Lakshya Sen is able to qualify for the Olympics (by getting into the top 16), he might have a better shot at a medal than Prannoy at least based on their form this year.

Sindhu won her R2. I didn’t realize BWF streams matches for free on YouTube, so I had a chance to watch this match. A good comeback win. There was a moment when her opponent mounted a comeback in the 3rd game (12-13) but PVS played a solid game to stop her.

French Open:

R2: P V Sindhu (11) 13-21 21-10 21-14 Beiwen Zhang (USA,10).

First QF of the year for PVS.
