Australian Open 2024

Post by Dinesh »

Entry list is out.

Sumit Nagal in Singles Qualifying.

Bops/Ebden, Bhambri/Haase in direct acceptance list.
Balaji/Cornea (#1), Ani/VSP (#6), Kadhe/Jeevan (#10) in the alternates list. Hope at least 2 of these teams enter the main draw. :goodluck:

Ankita might just be the lone representation for us in the women’s side.

RamK is now ranked 176 in doubles, he is way out of contention of making the Australian open doubles draw.

Yuki has got quite a good partner, Robin Hasse. Hasse has reached final at Australian open although it was 10 years back in 2013 but even in last year he has won an ATP title. So, I think good chance for Yuki to do will in this Australian series tournaments which can solidify his position to get into remaining slams.

Bala should also easily get in, mostly VSP-Anirudh will also travel there hoping they would get in. Last year Bala and Jeevan were 11 out in initial entry list and eventually sneaked in.

Qualifying matches are notoriously competitive and unpredictable. But on paper, Sumit has a relatively easy draw. I suspect his main challenge could be the veteran John Millman, if the latter can beat #119 Alex Molcan in Q2.

Ankita's draw looks a lot tougher, but hopefully she is motivated as hell to make that one final leap into a Slam main draw after umpteen attempts.

On paper these are great draws. You will get one of the top 16 seeds in your qualifying block and they have drawn #14 and 15. Likewise, unseeded Ankita would have to meet one of the 32 seeds in the first 2 rounds and she has drawn #22 in the second round. 👍 to both of them!

Next up, tomorrow:

[Q2] Ankita Raina (IND, 221) vs. 22-Sara Bejlek (CZE, 132)

Her opponent is a left-handed 17 year old, who plays almost exclusively on clay. She was double-bagelled in Q1 of the US Open, but won her Q1 here over Himeno Sakatsume (JPN, 181) 63 61, so she appears to be improving fast.

Excellent win by Ankita, she again showed her fighting qualities as usual coming back from a match point down. I was a bit worried about Ankita after her mini slump towards the end of the last year about some injury. But, today's match showed she is back to her fighting best.

Bejlek qualified thru to Australian open main draw last year. So, she is pretty good on hard courts and one of the finest young players on WTA circuit currently ( 3rd best ranked among under 18's). So, it is a challenge for Ankita.
